Diversity Experiences And Perceptions Of Climate Among Australian University Students, Nicholas A. Bowman, Nida Denson Apr 2014

Diversity Experiences And Perceptions Of Climate Among Australian University Students, Nicholas A. Bowman, Nida Denson

Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

In the past two decades, the proportion of students of color at American colleges and universities has increased substantially, and similar trends toward diversification are also occurring in other nations (McInnis, 2003). In the context of this burgeoning campus heterogeneity, promoting a positive climate for diversity has become increasingly important. Institutions that have sought to promote racial/ethnic diversity have generally started by increasing the representation of students of color, but many have not been sufficiently prepared to support a more diverse student population (Hurtado, Milem, Clayton-Pedersen, & Allen, 1999). Such a lack of support can be quite problematic because …

Mind, Body, Music, Kimberly Lewis Apr 2014

Mind, Body, Music, Kimberly Lewis

Honors Projects

Performance anxiety is a phenomenon that all musicians struggle with at some point in their careers. As someone who has been a victim of performance anxiety throughout my life as a musician, I searched for ways that I could eliminate my own performance anxiety, as well as share information with other musicians on how their performance anxiety could be reduced. After doing my research, I realized that many music teachers do not discuss performance anxiety and ways that it can be reduced when teaching their students. I propose that music teachers discuss performance anxiety and performance anxiety reducing techniques with …

Digital Divide In Social Media Prosumption: Proclivity, Production Intensity, And Prosumer Typology Among College Students And General Population, Louisa Ha, Gi Woong Yun Apr 2014

Digital Divide In Social Media Prosumption: Proclivity, Production Intensity, And Prosumer Typology Among College Students And General Population, Louisa Ha, Gi Woong Yun

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

This paper examines the digital divide in social media prosumption. It compares college students’ and general population’s prosumption behavior in social media and proposes a set of measures of prosumption in online media settings with special emphasis on social media including prosumption proclivity, production intensity, and a prosumption index which can be used in future studies on social media and other usergenerated content sites. We classified prosumption behavior in a quadrant of four main types along the two dimensions of production and consumption. A polarized trend of prosumption was observed. Prosumption proclivity is a much stronger facilitator of social media …

Missing Piece Of The Departure Puzzle: Student-Institution Fit And Intent To Persist, Nicholas A. Bowman, Nida Denson Mar 2014

Missing Piece Of The Departure Puzzle: Student-Institution Fit And Intent To Persist, Nicholas A. Bowman, Nida Denson

Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

According to prevailing theory and anecdotal evidence, the congruence between institutional attributes and students’ needs, interests, and preferences plays a key role in promoting college satisfaction and retention. However, this assertion has received little direct empirical attention, and the few available studies appear to have some key limitations. This study examined the factor structure and predictive validity of a newly developed student-institution fit instrument, which was designed to avoid the problems in previous research. Confirmatory factor analyses identified several interrelated dimensions of fit, and these dimensions can be combined into a single overall fit index. Moreover, a six-factor structure of …

“The Hitchcock Touch”: Visual Techniques In The Work Of Alfred Hitchcock, Paige A. Driscoll Feb 2014

“The Hitchcock Touch”: Visual Techniques In The Work Of Alfred Hitchcock, Paige A. Driscoll

International ResearchScape Journal

Since his beginning as a filmmaker in Britain, Alfred Hitchcock has become a household name not only in Britain and, later, the United States, but also internationally. Hitchcock’s unique auteur style has made his name recognizable even if one has not personally viewed one of his many films. How is it, then, that Hitchcock has accumulated such a distinct and well-known style? Using examples from his films, the research of other Hitchcock experts, and cinematic technique and terminology resources, this article illustrates the way Hitchcock’s visual techniques have contributed to the creation of this auteur style. The visual techniques examined …

Analyzing To Live Through The Mediums Of Literature And Film: Two Vastly Contrasting Presentations Of Twentieth Century China’S Radical History, Abbie Doll

International ResearchScape Journal

This essay examines the acceptance and public interpretation of modern China’s rather turbulent past in light of Yu Hua’s novel To Live and Zhang Yimou’s film adaptation. It explores how fictionalized traumatic experiences have the ability to ultimately and effectively communicate social truth. Other aspects examined are the utilization of death as an effective political critique, the overall significance of and interpretive variances caused by the urban-rural divide in Chinese society, and also the particular molding of citizens’ lives that occurs due to either Mao’s overbearing presence or the conspicuous lack thereof. Types of sources referred to and used throughout …

Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) Exposure On Response Perseveration And Ultrasonic Vocalization Emission In Rat During Development, Dena Krishnan, Howard C. Cromwell, Lee Meserve Jan 2014

Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) Exposure On Response Perseveration And Ultrasonic Vocalization Emission In Rat During Development, Dena Krishnan, Howard C. Cromwell, Lee Meserve

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The 3 major symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders include 1) social behavioral alterations, 2) problems in communication and 3) higher-order motoric deficits of perseveration and stereotyped movements. Previous work has shown that early developmental exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) alters rat pup social motivation and juvenile rat social recognition/investigation. The present work extends this previous research by examining how perinatal PCB exposure alters motoric functions and communication abilities at different stages of development. Action perseveration was examined using performance measures from a T-maze environment. Communication abilities were evaluated by monitoring ultrasound emission in rat pups during a brief isolation from …
