Whether natural or caused by people, disasters have been and continue to be a part of life that communities must deal with. Tourism destinations are especially vulnerable to disaster occurrences due to their economic dependence on visitors and the need to maintain a positive image of attractiveness and safety for continued success. The past decade has witnessed numerous natural disasters in tourist destinations around the world; therefore, community leaders, local governments, and major industries need to be prepared for the worst.

Recent national studies document the fact that the lackluster performance in the lodging industry's occupancy rates are directly attributable to the steady growth in the supply of available rooms at a rate that consistently outpaced the demand. Resort area managers who are facing this decade-long reduction in occupancy rates are especially cognizant of the need to revise current market strategies to shield their properties from additional economic fallout that are often triggered by external events. Vacation Patterns Of Families Who Have A Child With Down's Syndrome, Laura Mclachlin

This study investigated the question "How does a child with Down's syndrome impact family vacation patterns?" Interviews were conducted with 25 families who had at least three children, one of whom had Down's syndrome. Four major conclusions were drawn. First, in the amount of time spent 1n family leisure, vacations were second only to sports-related activities and were equal to television and VCR viewing. Second, camping was identified as the favorite family leisure activity. Third, factors affecting family vacations included time constraints, location of family vacations, lack of recreational opportunities, and physical and/or behavioral problems experienced by the child with …

Recreational Boaters: A Life Style Segmentation Analysis, Thomas D. Potts

A prevailing hypothesis in recreation scholarship is that a strong relationship exists between leisure choice behavior and life style. In this study boaters in a coastal county were segmented through life style analysis. Twenty-one life style dimensions utilized in previous studies were identified and twice pretested for validity. Of the 21 dimensions, 7 were found to be valid. These seven variables: Community Mindedness, Brand Loyalty, Price Consciousness, Law and Order, Upper Class Sociability, Women's Rights, and Credit User were included in the final survey instrument. Information's Effects On Residents' Perception Of Tourism Development, Carolyn Robertson, John C. Crotts

Resident support for existing and future tourism development is an important issue facing tourism managers. This study addressed the relative influence of a public relations campaign on the attitudes of residents towards tourism development. Two random samples were drawn from two comparable Florida counties. Analysis revealed that, on average, residents of the community with a public relations campaign had more positive attitudes toward tourism development than did residents of the community with no campaign. Implications for future tourism public relations campaigns are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to describe the extent to which visitors to a historic attraction acquired information in their vacation deliberations and the degree to which their trip characteristics could be used to discriminate between levels of active and passive information seekers. In this data set, respondents who sought out and used information in their trip planning significantly differed from their passive counterparts in terms of their travel decision making. Active groups of information seekers tended to evaluate more alternatives, traveled greater distances, and had limited prior experience with the attraction as compared to their more passive counterparts. …
