Faculty must juggle competing demands of scholarship, teaching, and service. Maintaining work-‐life balance requires effective use of limited time. A BGSU faculty learning community formed to identify and explore efficiency practices, while developing accountability for implementing them. During this interactive roundtable, we will share experiences and tips: batching email and removing notifications, developing hyper-‐ detailed calendars, protecting writing time, capturing “useless” downtime, assessing tasks based on importance and urgency, creating a social support system, and learning when and how to say no. An important lesson is that time management tools are not “one-‐size-‐fits-‐all,” and particular techniques resonate more with individual …

Restructuring The Sense Of Nation In The Culture Of Imagined Communities Through Bollywood, Shrinkhala Upadhyaya Feb 2015

Restructuring The Sense Of Nation In The Culture Of Imagined Communities Through Bollywood, Shrinkhala Upadhyaya

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)

Restructuring the sense of nation in the culture of imagined communities through Bollywood

Unarguably, Bollywood (Hindi cinema) has spread its wings and continued its legacy to be the second most popular film center of the world after Hollywood, and successfully made its impact globally (Punathambekar, 2013). Two of its remarkable productions, DilwaleDulhaniya Le Jaenge(DDLJ, The Brave Heart Will Take the Bride, 1995) and Purab aur Paschim (PAP, East and West, 1970) are still cherished. The paper will talk about these two movies representing the idea of nationalism before and after globalization, thereby creating sense of nation in the idea …

Emerging Feminist Voices On Media And Representation, Diana Depasquale, Cassie Tenorio, Alyssa Wells, Savannah Fulmer

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)

The work featured in this panel is from students in WS2000, Introduction to Women's Studies. I created an assignment called "Choose Your Own Adventure." These projects include: an examination gender in film, and a revised version of the Bechdel Test, sexism and misogyny in gaming culture expressed through a series of comics, a painting on canvas using a variety of materials and techniques representing the control of women's reproductive rights and the damage done to female bodies by patriarchal language and rhetoric, and an analysis of womanism, scripture and Alice Walker's The Color Purple.

Each student engaged with issues related …

Postcolonial Disability In Mohesen Makhmalbaf’S Kandahar, Sukshma Vedere Feb 2015

Postcolonial Disability In Mohesen Makhmalbaf’S Kandahar, Sukshma Vedere

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)

Kandahar (2001), an Iranian film directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, details the journey of the protagonist, Nafas, to Kandahar to save her sister from committing suicide on the day of the solar eclipse. The film has gained recent attention by disability studies scholars for the representation of disability in Afghanistan; scholars have discussed the significance of prosthetics and international aid for the disabled in post-war zones of the Third World, but little has been said about disability as a postcolonial embodiment. I argue that Kandahar represents the postcolonial state as a disabled space both literally and metaphorically. It projects the veil …

Unicorns: Past, Present And In The Imagination, Jill A. Jablonski Feb 2015

Unicorns: Past, Present And In The Imagination, Jill A. Jablonski

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)

In the last few thousand years, unicorn folklore has extensively evolved. In fact, the evolution of the mentioned above mythical creature has been so drastic, that the original unicorn lore of the Greek, Roman and early Christian people, would be unrecognizable to a modern day person. Consequently, to the historical figures (such as Julius Caesar and Ctesias) that contributed to the creation of the mythical creature, they would not recognize the unicorn as it is found in My Little Pony or any other pop culture sensation. To discover the cause of disconnect between the folkloric and pop culture unicorns, an …

The Perpetual Other: Native American Representation In Documentaries, Julia E. Largent Feb 2015

The Perpetual Other: Native American Representation In Documentaries, Julia E. Largent

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)

When an individual uses an Internet search engine to find images of Native Americans, the person will most likely find that most of the images are paintings of the Native American warrior or are older black and white portraits. After searching for other races, such as Asian American or African American, the search is more likely to come up with contemporary images of people playing sports, in school, or with their families. Why is there such a stark difference? Why are Native Americans so often thought about as only in the past? From the early days of books and portraits …

Blood Ivory: The Story Of Illegal Poaching And Its Global Influence, Alanna Demers Feb 2015

Blood Ivory: The Story Of Illegal Poaching And Its Global Influence, Alanna Demers

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Illegal animal product trade such as the trade of ivory and rhinoceros horn has become a problem that influences the entire world. Throughout history, from pre-colonial times to modern day, illicit trade in ivory and rhino horn have drastically affected Africa’s development, eco-system, and society. The decline in the rhinoceros and elephant populations on the African continent drastically effect vegetation, which directly correlates with agriculture and the health of people and animals. The history of the illegal ivory and rhino horn trade is complicated, and provides an essential context in order to understand the modern day situation. Scholarly works and …

Truth Games: Negotiating Power, Identity And The Spirit Of Resistance In Contemporary South African Art, Dominique Pen Feb 2015

Truth Games: Negotiating Power, Identity And The Spirit Of Resistance In Contemporary South African Art, Dominique Pen

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Sue Williamson has come to hold an esteemed and influential role in the South African art world not only for her literary gifts as the author of several books about South African art (perhaps most notably her first book, Resistance Art in South Africa, published in 1989), but also as an artist whose work often deals with the social, political, and conceptual repercussions of apartheid in South Africa. Indeed, much of her development as an artist stemmed from her activism during the struggle against apartheid in South Africa beginning in the late 1970’s and has evolved to include the contemporary …

Caribbean Commodity: The Marketing And Consumption Of Black Bahamian Female Identity, Dellareese Higgs Feb 2015

Caribbean Commodity: The Marketing And Consumption Of Black Bahamian Female Identity, Dellareese Higgs

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Abstract

In this essay, I explore the Bahamas’ connection to tourism, tracing and defining how it became the central aspect of the country’s economy, and how whiteness was re-deployed in this new era of tourism. I examine the impact of these phenomena on the identity constructions of the local culture, and articulate women’s placement in the effort to re-invent the Bahamas as the ultimate tourist destination. While the essay specifically documents the nature of tourism in the Bahamas, it focuses primarily on the women within tourism’s many fronts of cultural change and marginalization. I use the term ‘white tourist culture’ …

Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young Feb 2015

Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Knowing the psychosocial themes in a specific sport context allows us to understand athletes’ experiences and informs approaches of coaches (Côté et al., 1995) and sport programmers (Danish et al., 2005). Few qualitative studies focus on psychosocial conditions of adult athletes in coached sport settings. The purpose of this study was to capture important psychosocial themes from the perspective of Masters swimmers involved in day-to-day coached swimming environments. Data were collected using semi-structured open-ended interviews with 10 competitive swimmers (5 male, 5 female; M age = 53 years; range: 45-65 years). Analyses revealed four over-arching themes that represented athletes’ a) …

Primary And Secondary Drowning Interventions: The American Red Cross Circle Of Drowning Prevention And Chain Of Drowning Survival, William Ramos, Angela Beale, Peter Chambers, Shelley Dalke, Roy Fielding, Louise Kublick, Stephen Langendorfer, Terri Lees, Linda Quan, Peter Wernicki

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Creating awareness about primary and secondary interventions that can be used in situations involving drowning is an important prevention strategy. Consistent among reports from almost all countries is that drowning injury steals life from young children, followed by youth, and then young adults. As a result of the on-going need to reduce these types of statistics, the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council – Aquatic Sub Council established two intervention programs to address both sides of drowning events. Content of this manuscript is based on work by members of the Aquatic Sub Council. It focuses on describing and providing scientific …

Public Understanding And Knowledge Of Rip Currents And Beach Safety In The Uk, Eleanor Woodward, Emily Beaumont, Paul Russell, Ross Macleod Feb 2015

Public Understanding And Knowledge Of Rip Currents And Beach Safety In The Uk, Eleanor Woodward, Emily Beaumont, Paul Russell, Ross Macleod

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Rip currents present a severe hazard for water users on beaches and account for the greatest cause of lifeguard rescues worldwide. The physical dynamics of rip currents are well studied, and more recently, the social and behavioural science research surrounding human interaction of rip currents has been expanding, providing a social perspective and feeding into public education strategies. The aim of this study was to assess levels of public understanding of rip currents and beach safety on UK beaches. A questionnaire was undertaken (N = 407) during the summer of 2012 on four beaches. Beach users had a poor knowledge …

¿Más Español Por Más Votos? Assessing The Impact Of Spanish Language Electoral Advertisements On Latino Voter Turnout, Alexander C. Ervin Jan 2015

¿Más Español Por Más Votos? Assessing The Impact Of Spanish Language Electoral Advertisements On Latino Voter Turnout, Alexander C. Ervin

International ResearchScape Journal

After Latino-Americans demonstrated their power in the 2012 presidential election, securing increased minority support at the polls has become a major goal for both main U.S. political parties. A reliable bloc of Latino voters on one’s side could mean more wins, but Latinos have a low voter turnout rate. This paper explores how to increase Latino turnout and argues that the use of the Spanish language in electoral advertising will have a positive effect. By comparing statewide Latino turnout data during the 2002 midterm elections, I find states with a sizable amount of Spanish-language get-out-the-vote messages do see slightly increased …

Radiophobia And Trauma: Examining The Lasting Effects Of The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, Lydiarose Mockensturm Jan 2015

Radiophobia And Trauma: Examining The Lasting Effects Of The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, Lydiarose Mockensturm

International ResearchScape Journal

The Fukushima nuclear disaster of March 2011 – unlike the earthquake and tsunami leading up to it – was not experienced directly or immediately for many. Its effects were, however, experienced belatedly, in the form of displacement and radiophobia, which have had a significant psychological impact on survivors. Moreover, excessive media coverage of the disaster allowed it to have a global impact not seen during previous nuclear disasters. Shion Sono’s film The Land of Hope, released in Japan in October of 2012, helps to illustrate the traumatic nature of a nuclear crisis through issues such as dislocation, media coverage, …

Twelve Years A Terror: U.S. Impact In The 12-Year Civil War In El Salvador, Cara E. Mckinney

International ResearchScape Journal

This essay explores the impacts of the United States government and military in the civil war in El Salvador in a comprehensive historical study. Through the presence of monetary aid, a disregard for the human rights of people in El Salvador, and the presence of U.S. trained soldiers at the then School of Americas and the current Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the U.S. prolonged and augmented the negative effects of the Salvadoran Civil War.

Chinese Educational Reforms: Transition Of An International Powerhouse, Jane Powell Jan 2015

Chinese Educational Reforms: Transition Of An International Powerhouse, Jane Powell

International ResearchScape Journal

It has been almost everywhere in the media: The People's Republic of China has a powerhouse of an education system. Only a few years ago were Americans being bombarded with advertisement campaigns, outlining the vast disparity between American and European or Asian testing scores [AR1] [JP2] in math [AR3] [JP4] and science. Now, there is a new discussion. Although the current Chinese system is effective for producing excellent test scores, many project that the rigidity will eventually only hinder China, that a lack of encouragement and space for creativity in Chinese students’[AR5] [JP6] educational careers will result in a …
