Comparing Contemporary Dystopian Novels With Canonical Classics In The Classroom, Elizabeth Moser Apr 2015

Comparing Contemporary Dystopian Novels With Canonical Classics In The Classroom, Elizabeth Moser

Honors Projects

This is a set of twenty lesson plans combining canonical classic dystopian novels and contemporary dystopian novels in the classroom. The first ten lesson plans involve teaching Divergent by Veronica Roth and 1984 by George Orwell together. The second ten days involve teaching The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and 1984 by George Orwell together. These sets of lessons are not necessarily meant to be taught together but each of the ten day sets were created to show the different possibilities for teaching these types of novels together.

Action Research: Reflective Journaling Within Middle Grades Mathematics Classroom, Larissa Van Der Molen Apr 2015

Action Research: Reflective Journaling Within Middle Grades Mathematics Classroom, Larissa Van Der Molen

Honors Projects

Reflective journaling within a middle grades mathematics classroom offers great potential as a practice for both educators and students. This paper examines the previous work that has been completed while also exploring the effectiveness of the practice in a fifth grade math classroom. The research shows that while implementing reflective journaling in a math classroom is time consuming, the benefits of opening lines of communication between pupil and teacher and improving the student learning experience outweigh the negatives. This study focuses on a fifth grade math class composed of 26 students who wrote daily in their journals. The data discussed …

Evaluating A Project-Based Learning Approach To The Bgsu Business Curriculum, Kara Harmeyer Apr 2015

Evaluating A Project-Based Learning Approach To The Bgsu Business Curriculum, Kara Harmeyer

Honors Projects

Inspiration for my honors project came from an assignment that I completed in a previous marketing course. This assignment is the only experience that I have had with project-based learning, but it certainly made an impact on me. My honors project presented the perfect opportunity for learning more about project-based learning and the way it is used in educational settings. In addition to the benefits and challenges associated with project-based learning, I also researched the characteristics and learning styles of millennial students to understand whether project based-learning is compatible. In conclusion, I evaluated how project-based learning could be utilized in …

Cross-Cultural Semiotic Analysis Of American Ideological Values, Sasha Allgayer, Emi Kanemoto Mar 2015

Cross-Cultural Semiotic Analysis Of American Ideological Values, Sasha Allgayer, Emi Kanemoto

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

The American Dream had long been sought after by many international audiences. With increasing globalization, exposure to media and content through various channels, and recent historical events, American values have increasingly become accessible to audiences worldwide. For some, a reinforcement of those ideals and values. For others, a deterrence further away from them. Since the American ideologies have been spread across the world, it is significant to examine how these ideologies are interpreted cross-culturally. “Fighting to protect American freedoms/rights democracy” has been used by American politicians and such statements can have varying interpretations based on background and cultural upbringing. Without …

The Identity And Identity: The Extant Of National And Regional Identity On Albanian Students, Nina Gjoçi Mar 2015

The Identity And Identity: The Extant Of National And Regional Identity On Albanian Students, Nina Gjoçi

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

This study explores how the perceived cultural identity as a social and individual concept impacts the effectiveness of communication among Albanian students in Albania, Kosova, and the FRY of Macedonia. The new democracies in South East Europe and European Union integration aspiration have raised the sensitivity toward culture and identity in every aspect of social life. This new process of building, rebuilding, changing, and shaping new democratic institutions requires at the same time new ways to communicate and negotiate. What before democracy was silenced, and implicit, now it has come into the open for evaluation and discussion. Now, as the …

“Do Sneeze In My Face”- The Rejection Of Anti-Mers Public Health Messages By Saudi Arabian Camel Farmers, Nicholas Prephan Mar 2015

“Do Sneeze In My Face”- The Rejection Of Anti-Mers Public Health Messages By Saudi Arabian Camel Farmers, Nicholas Prephan

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

In 2014, the disease known as MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, spread to near epidemic levels in Saudi Arabia. After an official inquiry, camels were found to be one of the main sources for the development of MERS. Almost ubiquitous in Saudi Arabia, camels have had an important role in the culture and history of that country. In an attempt to bring the rate of contraction under control, the government of Saudi Arabia told farmers to not have contact with their livestock. As a means of protesting this public health announcement, the farmers took to to social media to …

A Theory Of Hashtag Hijacking, Benjamin Brojakowski, Lisa K. Hanasono Mar 2015

A Theory Of Hashtag Hijacking, Benjamin Brojakowski, Lisa K. Hanasono

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

This article presents the theoretical framework for hashtag hijacking, a subversive communicative strategy that disrupts and challenges dominant discourses of hashtag activism on social media sites. Drawing from the literature on new media, digital activism, and persuasion, our theory shows how hashtag hijacking can reroute and reappropriate efforts made by media activists and sources who occupy positions of power. Tracking the evolution of #MyNYPD as a working exemplar, we explicate how hashtag activism and hijacking develop and foster two parallel, yet disparate discourses in the new media landscape.

Cbpr And A Multitrack Model Of Development: A Proposed Critical Ethnography, Jeanette M. Dillon Mar 2015

Cbpr And A Multitrack Model Of Development: A Proposed Critical Ethnography, Jeanette M. Dillon

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

The modernization paradigm of development still dominates in practice, according to Sparks (2007), and apparently, that is only one indicator of how the participatory development paradigm has not lived up to its elegant theoretical promise. This paper argues that the community-based participatory paradigm can live up to its promise as it works in tandem with the dominant paradigm, despite seemingly antithetical epistemologies. A critical ethnography of a community-based participatory research project in a Midwest university health communication class is proposed to assess this contention. Some research questions that could be addressed include: Do group members connect their experience to the …

Adam Silver And The Complexity Of New Racism, Linsay M. Cramer Mar 2015

Adam Silver And The Complexity Of New Racism, Linsay M. Cramer

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

This paper argues that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s rhetorical performance in response to the racist comments made by former L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling in April 2014 exemplifies whiteness and contributes to what Eduardo Bonilla-Silva (2014) calls colorblind racism. The paper examines how Silver’s rhetorical performance resembles that of David Stern’s performance of White hegemonic masculinity in response to “Malice at the Palace”, as identified by Griffin and Calaffel (2011), but differs in many regards, exemplifying the complex and often dialectical nature of “new racism”.

Using Cognitive Dissonance Theory In Reducing Racism And Prejudice, Esen Saygin Koc Mar 2015

Using Cognitive Dissonance Theory In Reducing Racism And Prejudice, Esen Saygin Koc

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

In this paper, Leon Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance is suggested for utilization in order to reduce and/or diminish racism in society. Leon Festinger’s theory posits that humans strive to be consistent, mostly internally (thus the term cognitive); when a cognitive dissonance is experienced, an individual feels a psychological uncomfort and therefore attempts to reduce the tension created by that particular experience. In this paper, I suggest specific ways of combatting racism in daily life, particularly in communities that are mostly homogenous and/or have high levels of (potential or active) racism. It is important to note that, I use the …

Culture Wars In Education: Whiteness, Apush, And The Pursuit Of Property, Andrew Donofrio Mar 2015

Culture Wars In Education: Whiteness, Apush, And The Pursuit Of Property, Andrew Donofrio

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

This work examines an artifact of K-12 educational discourse within which structural and cultural aspects of society merge to reinforce current social power dynamics, specifically whiteness as a norm within U.S society. My intention here is to add to the wealth of literature aimed at decentering whiteness by furthering our understanding of how, while often unnoticed, whiteness works to privilege by framing societal perceptions and ascribing meaning based on a person’s race (Crenshaw, 1997; Gilborn, 2005; Haviland, 2008; Leonardo, 2010; Nakayama & Krizek, 1995; Shome, 1996; Warren, 1999). To do so, I will perform a rhetorical analysis of a Jefferson …

Portrayals Of Identities Through Bollywood: Shift From Brain Drain To Drain Circulation, Shrinkhala Upadhyaya Mar 2015

Portrayals Of Identities Through Bollywood: Shift From Brain Drain To Drain Circulation, Shrinkhala Upadhyaya

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

The desire to have more and an opportunity to achieve it, is the primary motive for migration. Before globalization (or prior to 1990s), the flow of highly educated professionals such as doctors, engineers, and scientists from a less to more developed nation was considered to be a negative drain for the less developed country. It was thought that the brain, skilled workforce, money invested, culture and every positive aspect of that person is moving out. In short, the famous term “brain drain” was happening and making the nation of the migrators weak and incompetent. However, a recent trend has emerged …

Exploring The Sky: Examinations Of Women’S Empowerment Through Contemporary Movements, Erika M. Behrmann Mar 2015

Exploring The Sky: Examinations Of Women’S Empowerment Through Contemporary Movements, Erika M. Behrmann

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

In the post 9/11 milieu there has been a deluge of media attention towards women’s empowerment (Mehta, 2009). Yet, despite the variety of origins, one dominate narrative remains: that non-Western women are often perceived as victims to underdevelopment. Furthermore, the term empowerment carries multiple connotations. Often coterminous with liberal feminist frameworks, empowerment for subaltern women presupposes that the panacea to female empowerment is access to capital. One such example is the video game Half the Sky Movement: The Game, published by Games for Change (G4C) and based off the New York Times bestseller written by Nicolas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. …

Avengers Reluctantly Assemble: A Post-Racial And Xenophobic Criticism Of The Avengers, Gabriel Cruz Mar 2015

Avengers Reluctantly Assemble: A Post-Racial And Xenophobic Criticism Of The Avengers, Gabriel Cruz

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

This study endeavors to rhetorically criticize the ideological underpinnings found in the Marvel comic book film adaptation Marvel’s The Avengers (2012). Specifically this study involves multiple viewings of the movie along with analysis of the ideological themes of postracism and xenophobia as evident in the film’s dialogue, plot, character interactions and various other narrative devices and details. Adaptations of comic books have a long history within film and will continue to have a significant box-office presence for the foreseeable future. The Marvel Cinematic Universe alone, which began its present continuity in 2008 with Iron Man, will have produced twenty-one films …

How The Media Covered The Issue Of Women Driving In Saudi Arabia, Saud Alsulaiman Mar 2015

How The Media Covered The Issue Of Women Driving In Saudi Arabia, Saud Alsulaiman

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

Saudi Arabia is considered as the largest country in the Arabian Peninsula and the second largest Arab state. Saudi Arabia is believed to be the only country in the world that forbid women from driving cars. Although Saudi women have played crucial roles in the development of many aspects of Saudi society, such as education, politics, and social changes, Saudi women still struggle to gain some of their rights, like driving cars. Throughout history, feminists in Saudi Arabia have launched many campaigns to defy driving ban by utilizing different strategies, including the use of social media. Women activists in Saudi …

"Young Wife From Northeast India Allegedly Raped”: Understanding The Framing Of Rape Reportage In Indian Media, Dhiman Chattopadhyay Mar 2015

"Young Wife From Northeast India Allegedly Raped”: Understanding The Framing Of Rape Reportage In Indian Media, Dhiman Chattopadhyay

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

On February 27, 2015, a woman was raped inside one of Delhi’s most ‘secure’ hospitals where even the nation’s Prime Minister goes for his medical check-up. The incident of this rape was reported by most of the English print, TV and online media within minutes. Almost all of them used similar text to describe the act of rape, to describe the crime, the victim and the accused. While in the case of the accused, his profession was mentioned and a subtle reference made of his religion, in case of the victim, her age, ethnicity, marital status and exactly what her …

Angelina Jolie’S Ovaries: Influence Of Metaphors Of The Ovary And Ovarian Cancer On Public Discourse Of Ovarian Cancer, Dinah A. Tetteh Mar 2015

Angelina Jolie’S Ovaries: Influence Of Metaphors Of The Ovary And Ovarian Cancer On Public Discourse Of Ovarian Cancer, Dinah A. Tetteh

Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers; yet public discourse about and understanding of the disease is limited. Metaphors used to discuss the ovaries and ovarian cancer may have a role to play in the limited public discourse about the disease. In this article, I offer a critical analysis of the limited visibility for ovarian cancer in the public sphere using Angelina Jolie’s case as an example. Jolie announced in 2013 that she had had double mastectomy and may in the future remove her ovaries because of an inherited faulty BRCA1 gene and a family history of cancer. …
