Police Integrity Lost: A Study Of Law Enforcement Officers Arrested, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Steven P. Lab, Steven L. Brewer Jr

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

There are no comprehensive statistics available on problems with police integrity, and no government entity collects data on all criminal arrests of law enforcement officers in the United States. Police crimes are those crimes committed by sworn law enforcement officers with the general powers of arrest. These crimes can occur while the officer is either on- or off-duty and include offenses committed by officers employed by state and local law enforcement agencies. This study provides a wealth of data on a phenomena that relates directly to police integrity— data that previously did not exist in any usable format. The first …

Traveling To Non-Traditional Destinations: Recommendations For American Students Studying Abroad In "Africa", Ifeyinwa U. Onyenekwu

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The Institute for International Education’s Annual Open Doors Report (2014) indicates that approximately 30% of U.S. study abroad college students travel to the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain. This compares to the less than 5% that study in sub-Saharan African countries. The author suggests postsecondary institutions need to do more to foster a balanced understanding of continental Africa.

Student-Athlete Undergraduate Degree And Career Alignment, Courtney C. Cox

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Little research has been done on student-athletes after graduation. The question driving this study was do athletes use their degree after graduation in lieu of academic clustering, fraud, emphasis on winning and athletic identity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not student-athletes undergraduate degree and career alignment was greater, less, or similar to the average collegiate body. Data was collected from 65 former male student-athletes from a Midwest Division I Mid-Major University over the 2009 through 2015 athletic seasons. Two sports were evaluated, Football (n= 54) and Men’s Basketball (n= 14). Degree fields were determined by …

Organizational Value Of Social Responsibility In Sport: Creating A Conceptual Framework, Joseph E. Durant

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a growing phenomenon in the corporate world, and with its growth comes related research. One of the biggest questions surrounding CSR as a part of business plans is whether it has verifiable benefits to the firm. Businesses typically make decisions based on what is best for the firm, so to inquire about the benefits of CSR is natural. Existing literature supports the monetary benefits of CSR as well as identifies non-monetary outcomes that are beneficial to the firm. Amongst the corporate markets that CSR has inhabited, the sport market is unique in its inherent marketing …

The Journey Of Transitioning: Being A Trans-Athlete In College Sport, Alexandra Klein Jan 2016

The Journey Of Transitioning: Being A Trans-Athlete In College Sport, Alexandra Klein

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

The NCAA’s stance on transgender athletes is such that universities should adopt new policies and practices to best provide equal opportunities for all transgender students wishing to compete on a collegiate athletic team. However, there is very little research about transgender athletes in college sport. This case study serves as the voice of one collegiate-athlete who is transitioning from female to male while continuing to be a Division I athlete. The limited research on transgender athletes provides some insight into their experiences before, during and after the athlete came out as transgender (e.g., Lucas-Carr & Krane, 2012; Semerjian & Cohen, …

This project mainly talks about the reasons of senior athletes why they participate in the Senior Games. It was well known that physical exercise can promote healthy lifestyles and physical condition of human beings, and large numbers of research had been done to investigate the motives and benefits of youth and adults to do exercise. Hence, the first purpose of this study is to reveal the reasons of seniors why they participate in sports, and the Senior Games is a …

Ncaa Compliance Officers’ Perceptions On Cost Of Attendance Legislation, Thomas R. Nisonger

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Over the past few years, the NCAA has been at the forefront of providing additional benefits to student-athletes and recently the NCAA passed the cost of attendance legislation. But with this legislation comes unintended consequences in the form of a recruiting advantage for many institutions and amendments would need to be made to combat the advantage (Katz, 2015). In order to examine the possibility of a recruiting advantage from the cost of attendance legislation, the senior members of each compliance office within the American Athletic Conference were surveyed (n=11). The survey was used to gain their opinions on various topics …

Federal Civil Rights Litigation Pursuant To 42 U.S.C. §1983 As A Correlate Of Police Crime, Philip M. Stinson, Steven L. Brewer Jr

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The Civil Rights Act of 1871 (codified at 42 U.S.C. §1983 and commonly referred to as Section 1983) provides a civil remedy for aggrieved persons to sue state actors who under the color of law violate federally protected rights. Since the 1960s there has been an explosion of Section 1983 litigation in the federal courts against police officers and their employing municipal and county agencies. Due to a lack of official statistics and poor methodologies, research has yet to determine how common Section 1983 actions are against the police nationwide. This study examines the relationship between police crime and being …

Preservice Teachers’ Understanding Of The Language Arts: Using A Lens Of Critical Literacy, Delane Bender-Slack, Teresa Young

Preservice teachers are placed in educational environments to learn about teaching literacy and about literacy’s role in the English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. First, the authors situate the study in our understanding of the language arts and frame it within critical …

Here To Stay: A Teacher’S 46-Year Journey With Accountability In One School Context, Angela J. Stefanski Jan 2016

Here To Stay: A Teacher’S 46-Year Journey With Accountability In One School Context, Angela J. Stefanski

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This narrative study explores accountability and care in the stories of an exceptional teacher, Marsha Ethridge, who taught more than 46 years in one low-socioeconomic community. While there has been an abundance of research related to teachers’ stories of accountability conducted in the last 20 years, much of it reflects accountability imposed on classrooms through systems of high-stakes testing. In this study, however, multiple perspectives of accountability populate one teacher’s stories. As a new teacher in 1964, Marsha recounted the negative impact of teaching in a time of little formal accountability. From the late 1990s moving forward, however, high-stakes testing …

Social Capital In Online Courses, Thomas Mays Jan 2016

Social Capital In Online Courses, Thomas Mays

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

As colleges and universities increase their online course offerings, student social experiences in online learning environments require further examination, specifically for nonresidential students who may already be less integrated into college social networks. A social capital framework was used to guide this qualitative study of 17 nonresidential students and two faculty from two regional campuses of a public Midwestern university. Student participants reported different experiences in online courses compared to face-to-face (FTF) courses, expressly reporting the development of fewer friendships in their online courses, a lack of a sense of community, and an increase in the mechanical nature of their …
