An Unchained Analysis Of Racial Tension In America, Moriah Angott Apr 2016

An Unchained Analysis Of Racial Tension In America, Moriah Angott

Honors Projects

Modern race issues stem not only from the past but also from a lack of understanding and empathy for each other. How we talk about race will not only inform how we are able to move forward as a society, but it will also say a great deal about how we are evolving as human beings. It is important, and has been recognized as such, that black Americans have the freedom to grapple with that past, to understand it, and to feel connected to those ancestors who suffered in order for the foundation of this country to be built. Is …

Not Just A Watered-Down Version Of A Freshman Orientation, Emily Skibski Apr 2016

Not Just A Watered-Down Version Of A Freshman Orientation, Emily Skibski

Honors Projects

I developed and piloted two 40 minute sessions for Bowling Green State University’s (BGSU) Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) Program, a one-day intesenive orientation program. After developing facilitation guides for these sessions, I trained a group of eight Orientation Leaders (OLs) to facilitate sessions for nontraditional and transfer students during SOAR, which occurred on January 8, 2016. Depending on how a student self-identified, the student attended among sessions for nontraditional, transfer, or traditional students. A facilitator’s guide for a session for traditional students was already developed and in use. The facilitation guides created for this honors project were designed …

Effects Of Data Collection Mode And Response Entry Device On Survey Response Quality, Louisa Ha, Chenjie Zhang, Weiwei Jiang Apr 2016

Effects Of Data Collection Mode And Response Entry Device On Survey Response Quality, Louisa Ha, Chenjie Zhang, Weiwei Jiang

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

Survey has been widely used as a data collection method for both academic andadministrative research. Different modes of conducting surveys have been created andcontinuously developed (Groves, 2011). With the fast-growing penetration of smartphones andother mobile media, survey researchers are faced with the challenge of how to make use of themin surveys while ensuring high data quality and minimizing bias in the coverage (Watson,Zamith, Cavanah & Lewis, 2015). It is especially important to note that Web surveys are nowdisplayed on different devices with different screen sizes and entry methods. So how responseentry devices affect response quality is another important question for …

Seeking Solace: Regret, Grief, Anxiety, Rebecca Schroeder Mar 2016

Seeking Solace: Regret, Grief, Anxiety, Rebecca Schroeder

Honors Projects

Seeking Solace: Regret, Grief, Anxiety is a triptych video and artifact piece inspired by the abstract analysis of my dreams. It recognizes worries held within my subconscious and brings them to life through graphic design, photography, and video. The process of creating provides a new perspective of looking at both art and occupational therapy as methods of solving emotional distress.

I have recorded over 80 of my dreams in the past year. In these dreams, regret, grief, and anxiety are common themes. These themes are represented in three triptychs that cycle through past, present, and future problems. The cycling of …

Reframe, Reuse, Recycle: The Found Object In Post-Colonial Africa, Recontextualized By Contemporary Artists, Hanna L. Stanhouse Feb 2016

Reframe, Reuse, Recycle: The Found Object In Post-Colonial Africa, Recontextualized By Contemporary Artists, Hanna L. Stanhouse

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

In his essay, “The cultural biography of things,” Igor Kopytoff writes about the ways in which objects have and develop cultural biographies. From the time of their creation, and subsequent adoption into society, man-made objects acquire “social lives” through the various economic, historic, environmental and political intensities in which they “experience.” Current trends for global contemporary artists, especially those working from an African sensibility, explore the materiality of objects, examining their layered identities and social lives. Artists thus consider how materials have loaded and layered histories and biographies. While economic factors force consumers to reuse, it is the creative impulse …

Walk Next To The Wall: Images Of Martyrs In The Egyptian Revolution, Kirsten Stricker Feb 2016

Walk Next To The Wall: Images Of Martyrs In The Egyptian Revolution, Kirsten Stricker

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Prior to the Egyptian revolution citizens of Hosni Mubarak’s Egypt are taught to “walk next to the wall”; a phrase that means keep your head down, mind your own business, do not meddle in the affairs of those who outrank you, and feed your family. In the end, walking next to the wall is not enough to save them. They can no longer escape attention by blending into the walls of their cities. Khaled Said is not the first young man to die at the hands of Cairo’s police, nor is he the last. Said’s death could not be swept …

Prospero's Monsters: Authenticity, Identity, And Hybridity In The Post-Colonial Age, Dominique Pen

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Between April 17th and May 17th, 2008, London-born, Nigerian-raised artist Yinka Shonibare’s work was exhibited at the James Cohan Gallery in New York City in a show entitled Prospero’s Monsters. The show was organized into three galleries – “La Méduse”, “The Age of Enlightenment” and “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” – each of which contained works of the same name. This study will focus on the bookends of the show, the first and last galleries, which consisted of seven works in total, in the first: the La Méduse multimedia sculpture/diorama and chromogenic print and in …
