Reactions Of Faith Groups To Hate Speech On Campus And Subsequent University Responses, Rachel Feldman

Honors Projects

Nationally, hate crimes committed against an individual because of their faith have been on the rise since 2014. In Northwest Ohio alone, the incidence of reported hate crimes as doubled. This study focused on students of many different faiths who have experienced hate speech on Bowling Green State University's campus. It also addressed past university responses to these incidents and whether students felt supported by these efforts. Two research questions were addressed in this study: Have students experienced hate speech on campus that was directly linked to their religious preference? Does Bowling Green State University need to change its reaction …

Moral Grandstanding In Public Discourse: Status-Seeking Motives As A Potential Explanatory Mechanism In Predicting Conflict, Joshua B. Grubbs, Brandon Warmke, Justin Tosi, A. Shanti James, W. Keith Campbell Oct 2019

Moral Grandstanding In Public Discourse: Status-Seeking Motives As A Potential Explanatory Mechanism In Predicting Conflict, Joshua B. Grubbs, Brandon Warmke, Justin Tosi, A. Shanti James, W. Keith Campbell

Psychology Faculty Publications

Public discourse is often caustic and conflict-filled. This trend seems to be particularly evident when the content of such discourse is around moral issues (broadly defined) and when the discourse occurs on social media. Several explanatory mechanisms for such conflict have been explored in recent psychological and social-science literatures. The present work sought to examine a potentially novel explanatory mechanism defined in philosophical literature: Moral Grandstanding. According to philosophical accounts, Moral Grandstanding is the use of moral talk to seek social status. For the present work, we conducted six studies, using two undergraduate samples (Study 1, N = 361; Study …

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Purpose: Athletic training education has advanced its professional degree to an entry level masters, a decision motivated by professional health education developments over the last 10 years. In respect to Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accreditation standards as well as evolutionary changes in athletic training education, current prerequisite expectations of entry level applicants are largely dependent upon program. Analysis of the publicly available documents via websites and other programmatic documents of professional athletic training including prerequisite classes, supplemental admissions requirements, length and credits of program, cost of attendance and degree level of core faculty. Methods: 144 professional …

The Impact Of Suspect Descriptions In University Crime Reports On Racial Bias, Naomi M. Fa-Kaji, Shannon K. Cheng, Mikki R. Hebl Oct 2019

The Impact Of Suspect Descriptions In University Crime Reports On Racial Bias, Naomi M. Fa-Kaji, Shannon K. Cheng, Mikki R. Hebl

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Crime reports often include suspect descriptions to alert community members and aid in police investigations. However, vague descriptions of suspects with racial identifiers can potentially do more harm than good. We first conducted an archival study to examine the frequency of reporting suspect race, as well as the relationship between the inclusion of race and the likelihood that the suspect was caught. Then we conducted an experimental study to examine how reporting race may affect overt and subtle racial attitudes. We found no significant relationship between the racial identification of a suspect and the likelihood that the suspect was caught …

Motivations To Control Prejudice Bias Performance Feedback In Developmental Relationships, C. Malik Boykin, Christine R. Smith Oct 2019

Motivations To Control Prejudice Bias Performance Feedback In Developmental Relationships, C. Malik Boykin, Christine R. Smith

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

In developmental relationships, providing accurate assessments of performance is necessary to maximize the developmental benefits for those receiving the feedback. Research suggests that performance assessments for underrepresented minorities are susceptible to biases related to out-group prejudice; however, little is known about the contributions of motivations to control prejudice, particularly in face-to-face settings. Addressing this, we examined the influences of internal and external motivations to control prejudice (IMS and EMS) on the positivity of White mentor’s feedback about their underrepresented minority mentee’s task performance. We analyzed video-recorded interactions between 56 randomly assigned cross-racial dyads, wherein mentees performed a speech task and …

The Effects Of Perspective Taking Implementing Intentions On Employee Evaluations And Hostile Sexism, Saaid A. Mendoza, Jeanine L. M. Skorinko, Sarah A. Martin, Lauren E. Martone Oct 2019

The Effects Of Perspective Taking Implementing Intentions On Employee Evaluations And Hostile Sexism, Saaid A. Mendoza, Jeanine L. M. Skorinko, Sarah A. Martin, Lauren E. Martone

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

The current research examined whether gender bias in the workplace could be reduced through perspective taking implementation intentions, which are if–then statements that specify how to accomplish goals (Gollwitzer, 1999). Amazon MTurk participants (N = 180, 53% male) learned they would complete a two-step performance review for a consulting company. Prior to receiving a male or female employee’s record, all participants were given a goal strategy to be fair in their review, with half also receiving an if–then strategy that encouraged perspective taking. Participants rated the employee on three work related dimensions (skillset, performance, and traits), provided an overall promotion …

Reflective Practice: The Impact Of Self- Identified Learning Gaps On Professional Development, Joanna C. Weaver, Matthew Ryan Lavery, Sarah Heineken Oct 2019

Reflective Practice: The Impact Of Self- Identified Learning Gaps On Professional Development, Joanna C. Weaver, Matthew Ryan Lavery, Sarah Heineken

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The ebb and flow of education creates unique challenges within educational programming. Universities are charged with the directive to offer more diverse field experiences within their course requirements. As a result of the directive, not every topic nor instructional scenario can be addressed in the program coursework, challenging the programs to bridge the pedagogical learning gaps of their candidates. The purpose of the professional development (PD) being studied was to connect pedagogical methods to candidates’ own learning by providing self-selected PD with instructional tools that candidates could directly put into practice. The self-selected PD based on self-reflection of knowledge had …

Validating Water Safety Competence, Shayne D. Baker Oam Dprof Aug 2019

Validating Water Safety Competence, Shayne D. Baker Oam Dprof

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In early summer of 2017 and 2018 almost 200 children participated in a program facilitated by Downs Little Lifeguards (http://www.tr.qld.gov.au/facilities-recreation/sport-recreation/swimming-pools-gyms/13096-downs-little-lifeguards-program), a regional community initiative developed specifically to ensure that children in regional and rural Australia are able to survive or save themselves in inland waterway settings in Australia. Downs Little Lifeguards (DLL) is an entity borne out of community concerns for the risk to children in rural areas recreating at inland waterways as was originally identified in 2014 through research by the Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA). This paper provides details on the assessment of the water …

First Responders' Narratives Of Drowning: Perceptions Of Family And Community Impacts And Policy Implications, John Wells Phd, Michael Bergin Phd, John Connolly B.Ed., Ma In Ed., Suzanne Denieffe Phd

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This is an exploratory study of the impacts of drowning death on local communities and families in the Republic of Ireland as perceived by first responders. The impact of a death may be particularly stressful. The identified population of interest were members of the Garda and first responders from Community Rescue Boats Ireland. The principal data collection method was one-to-one narrative interviews followed by a focus group. Questioning involved asking interviewees to talk about specific events rather than providing general opinions. Community identity was a source of impact, an urban or rural setting was a significant factor, social media was …
