Journaling As A Social-Emotional Teaching Practice To Promote Adolescent Mental Health, Mackenzie Robertson
Journaling As A Social-Emotional Teaching Practice To Promote Adolescent Mental Health, Mackenzie Robertson
Honors Projects
Given the current state of education in the United States, there has been an influx in the number of adolescents diagnosed with a mental illness or have experienced struggles with their mental health. Because of this, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies have been introduced further into adolescent education to bolster the skills students learned in their youths. To assist in the promotion of the five SEL competencies, different journaling strategies can be introduced to impact adolescent mental health positively and continue to practice SEL for life beyond high school. The purpose of this research is to introduce these strategies to pre-service …
The Musical Rhetoric Of Aretha Franklin And Nina Simone And The Civil Rights Movement, Hannah Hawk
The Musical Rhetoric Of Aretha Franklin And Nina Simone And The Civil Rights Movement, Hannah Hawk
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
Acclaimed artists such as Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone were able to use their music as a way to communicate change during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Through their public platforms they became powerful influencers who were able to spread awareness for social justice and create an image of strong Black womanhood for listeners. By using the Illusion of Life theory, this project examines how the listener is brought into a rhetorical moment that the artist creates through song. Black Feminist Thought allows inclusion of the artists’ life experiences to the analysis of the rhetorical power …
Bowling Green State University's All-Gender Housing And The Student Expereince, Molly Marody
Bowling Green State University's All-Gender Housing And The Student Expereince, Molly Marody
Honors Projects
All-gender housing has become a way for colleges and universities to create affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ students. As of 2022, only about 425 American schools have gender-neutral or all-gender housing programs out of the over 5,000 colleges in the United States. This lack of institutional support leads to trans and gender-nonconforming students reporting feeling less comfortable on their campuses. LGBTQ+ students report high rates of discrimination and harassment on college campuses. Studies about all-gender housing point to structural issues that cause students discomfort and feelings of instability. This study looks at Bowling Green State University’s all-gender housing program in hopes …
Topological Data Analysis With Mapper, Gretchen Langenbahn
Topological Data Analysis With Mapper, Gretchen Langenbahn
Honors Projects
This project is an introduction and overview of Mapper. Mapper is a method of high dimensional data visualization. Data visualization is a very important part of data analysis as it allows for further interpretation and exploration of data. Visualization of high dimensional data sets can be challenging as each variable is a new dimension that must be represented on a 2D, or at most 3D, graph. Mapper allows for high dimensional visualization by using Topological methods to study the relationships between points. This project goes over two different data set: the Iris data set, and a high dimensional data set …

Accessibility And The University Experience: Where Does Bowling Green State University Stand?, Abigail Mcnichols
Accessibility And The University Experience: Where Does Bowling Green State University Stand?, Abigail Mcnichols
Honors Projects
Accessibility is a rather broad term, but this paper focuses specifically on accessibility issues for students with disabilities pursuing higher education. While K-12 institutions have disability legislation like IDEA, higher education is governed by several different acts which work together to create a legal minimum. This paper serves to outline what that legal minimum is, whether Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is in compliance with the minimum, and what BGSU could be doing to go beyond the minimum. Based on an analysis of the ADA, Section 504, the 2008 ADAAA, and expert legal opinion, BGSU does appear to be compliant …
The Relationship Between Circadian Rhythms And Neurodegenerative Disease, Christopher Simpson
The Relationship Between Circadian Rhythms And Neurodegenerative Disease, Christopher Simpson
Honors Projects
Neurodegenerative disease is a pervasive and insidious disease affecting a large proportion of the elderly population. Leading to the degeneration of neural tissue throughout the nervous system, it is a slow and progressive disorder. Because of its nature, it is possible that it has a connection to circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are the endogenous approximately 24-hour rhythms of the body commonly associated with the sleep-wake cycle, but they account for much more. This review aims to ascertain the relationship between the two by covering several facets of research pursued in the past five years. Beginning with establishing a basic understanding …

Generation Z differs notably from previous generations like Baby Boomers or Generation X. In recent years, young adults have been persisting through the COVID-19 pandemic, though not unscathed. This paper seeks to answer the following question: How does Generation Z differ in its outlook on Viral diseases compared to previous generations? Using a series of three surveys conducted on three seperate Viral diseases (HIV, Zika, and COVID 19), it was found that while Generation Z has improved in its ability to combat Viral outbreaks due to factors like high digital literacy, other factors such as poorer mental health show that …
Outside The Box: Gender Roles, Gender Incongruence, And Psychological Wellbeing, Ashton Boffa
Outside The Box: Gender Roles, Gender Incongruence, And Psychological Wellbeing, Ashton Boffa
Honors Projects
My project explores the impacts of gender roles and gender identity on psychological wellbeing. Previous research has shown that gender roles are negatively associated with psychological wellbeing, and transgender individuals have lower psychological wellbeing than the cisgender population. Since transgender individuals have had unique experiences with gender roles, it leads to a question of how these individuals have been affected by gender roles. Participants responded to a confidential questionnaire about their experiences with gender roles as they were growing up, their gender incongruence, and their psychological wellbeing. The results were consistent with previous research. Furthermore, my results suggest that transgender …

Aeromonas Phage Research And The Public Health Impact Of Antibiotics In Aquaculture Workers, Madelyn Merchant
Aeromonas Phage Research And The Public Health Impact Of Antibiotics In Aquaculture Workers, Madelyn Merchant
Honors Projects
One of the most common fish diseases in aquaculture is Aeromonas infection. The most common way to treat this infection is through antibiotics. The bacteria in the fish can become antibiotic-resistant and perpetuate the disease. The diseases in fish create a huge financial loss and the industry loses $6 billion per year due to diseases in fish. An alternative to antibiotics is bacteriophage which causes less environmental degradation and is better for human gut flora. In aquaculture there have been examples of aquaculture workers becoming sick from the water in aquaculture ponds as well as from people eating the fish. …

I titled the project "Habitat Heroes" and students had to imagine that they were the only people left on Earth along with a few animals and lots of trash. They were tasked with selecting an endangered animal in Ohio from one of five different groups (mammals, birds, reptiles/amphibians, birds and fish) to create a habitat for. The …
"Standing In The Gap": Combating Sexual Abuse In The Protestant Church, Hayley N. Carter
"Standing In The Gap": Combating Sexual Abuse In The Protestant Church, Hayley N. Carter
Honors Projects
Sexual abuse in the Christian Church has been a problem for many decades, and scholars have written extensively about sexual abuse occurring in the Catholic Church. However, abuse occurring in the Protestant Church has not been given that same attention. In 2017, the #MeToo movement went viral and has inspired many sexual abuse survivors to share their stories. I will argue that the Protestant Church should acknowledge the #MeToo movement’s accomplishments, and that this acknowledgement would lead to positive changes in how it approaches sexual abuse. I also will discuss financial abuse, which is a correlating behavior along with sexual …

Mosaic: A Lifetime Of Poems, Emma F. Bowen
Honors Projects
In hopes of providing a clearer picture of the aging process and its effects on our personalities, follow this collection of poems through diary-like entries of individuals navigating their lives from daycare, heartbreak, and loneliness. The impact that development can have on our psychological well-being and brains is fascinating and feels familiar. Why do we see the world so differently when we are young? As we grow older, what is so important that makes us shift how we view ourselves and our environment multiple times? It is often seen that each generation shares like-mindedness throughout their lives – why?
Examining Bacteriophage Reliance On The Tola Protein Of Escherichia Coli, Ellen Davis
Examining Bacteriophage Reliance On The Tola Protein Of Escherichia Coli, Ellen Davis
Honors Projects
With the ever-growing crisis of antibiotic resistant bacteria, bacteriophage provide an important potential alternative therapy to treat infections when antibiotics are ineffective. For this reason, it is important to understand the mechanisms bacteriophage use to enter their bacterial host cell. The cellular envelope of the gram-negative bacterium E. coli contains a protein system known as Tol-Pal, which utilizes energy from the Proton Motive Force to carry out several cellular functions, including some associated with cellular division and outer-membrane stability. Certain bacteriophage take advantage of the energy produced by this system to cross the bacterial cell membrane. One important protein of …
