With the increasing cost of health care, more and more corporations, government agencies, and other organizations are initiating health promotion programs. It is imperative that these programs be well planned, properly implemented, and carefully evaluated if they are to be successful. Although either a management initiated program or an employee initiated program can be effective, the best approach is a joint management, employee initiated program. In such a joint approach the advantages of both the management initiated and employee initiated approaches are maximized while disadvantages of the two approaches are minimized. Corporate policy makers throughout the United States are providing their employees with an employee benefit known as Corporate Recreation/Fitness Programs. While doing so, many policy makers are investing great sums of money to enhance the wellness of the employees. The questions raised are: What is the anticipated return on the investment for these corporations? Does the provision of Corporate Recreation/Fitness Programs enhance corporate profits ("corporate wellness")? Is there a relationship between employee participation in Corporate Recreation/Fitness Programs and work task performance, absenteeism, turnover, stress levels, job satisfaction, and morale? This article presents research results aimed at answering these vital questions.

This paper examined the phenomenon of business sponsorship of leisure or recreational activities. Specifically, it determined the importance of and rank ordered program outcomes as perceived by directors of local municipal park and recreation agencies in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland who have hosted two or more nationwide, business funded, leisure activities. Recreation professionals entering the world of business confront value conflicts and ethical dilemmas. Ethical decision-making traditionally has been guided by philosophical principles briefly outlined in this article. Some professionals find the classical approaches too abstract for dealing with the very concrete-situations of the business world. Others accuse classical ethical theory of a utopian, even anticapitalistic, bias. A number of business situations with potential value conflicts are described, including competition, truth in advertising; relations with employees, and relation with clients/customers. Preventative measures were recommended as an alternative to rapidly expanding medical intervention.
