The Changing Family--The Impact On The Delivery Of Leisure Services, Adah Parker Strobell

Visions in Leisure and Business

The types and kinds of leisure services provided in a community are strongly influenced by the changes in the structure of families. The traditional nuclear family is now in the minority; one in six children live in a single parent family; delinquency rates among children ages 10 to 17 have increased 130 percent since 1960; over the past 25 years, the divorce rate has tripled; and in the wake of divorce, the standard of living of the ex-wife falls by 73 percent, while that of the ex-husband rises by 42 percent. There are gay parents; cultural differences are the rule; …

Family Recreation And The Single Parent, Doris D. Yates Jan 1988

Family Recreation And The Single Parent, Doris D. Yates

Visions in Leisure and Business

The traditional family of the 50's and 60's is a rare find in the 1980's. The 1980's has been plagued with an increase in the divorce rate and a decrease in the marriage rate, resulting in the increase of single parents, blended families, serial marriages and selective childlessness.

As we move into the 1990's recreation professionals and volunteer agencies need to focus more on the single parents in their offerings. Recreation for the single parent is a rarity therefore, a lot of low cost/no cost recreation goes unexplored because of the stigma attached to single parentness. Thus there is a …

Evolution Of Sport And Leisure Management: Commonalities And Crosslinkages, Emilyn A. Sheffield, Kathleen A. Davis

Visions in Leisure and Business

Commercial/private recreation and sport management professional preparation programs are growing rapidly in response to increasing consumer demands for sport, fitness and leisure programming. Sport and leisure management academicians share a common heritage, similar challenges, and an awareness of sports and movement as the leisure choice of millions. Crosslinkages between sport and leisure management programs transcend departmental housing at colleges and universities and common challenges are shared in the areas of image, curriculum content, and scholarly productivity. In this paper, several of these challenges are analyzed and management strategies for strengthening professional preparation in sport and leisure management are reviewed.

The following manuscript will address areas in which practitioners and academicians can develop stronger research relationships in sport and leisure management. Creative Strategies To Provide Family And Intergenerational Leisure Experiences, Jack Harper Jan 1988

Creative Strategies To Provide Family And Intergenerational Leisure Experiences, Jack Harper

Visions in Leisure and Business

Increased awareness of the need for providing family and intergenerational recreation experiences is growing. This awareness has occurred largely due to changes in the status of the family, and recognition that present programs are not suitable to serve the needs of families.

There are many barriers and constraints on leisure that affect the leisure participation of individuals and families. In order to overcome these constraints, creative strategies are necessary.

This paper reviews the constraints that prevent leisure participation and suggests some ways that recreation agencies can overcome them. The paper emphasizes the role of the public sector and examines strategies …

The Natural Discovery: For Family Enrichment And Relief Of Stress, Barbara Brock

Visions in Leisure and Business

In a world of family deterioration and unrelieved stress, activities are needed which promote togetherness and relaxation. Nature study and outdoor discovery programs lend themselves well as stress-reducing and family-enriching activities. Natural Discovery activities may take the form of hiking, 'gardening, trail building, animal tracking, meditation, or cloud watching; as many options exist as stars in the night sky.

Keys to family enrichment include taking responsibility, finding inherent rewards, and individual discovery. Keys to stress relief include changing one's environment, exercising, and involvement in worthy endeavors. Not only do Natural Discovery activities contain all six keys, they are easily adaptable …
