Racial Differences In The Relationship Between Infant Mortality And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Stamper Balistreri, Edward G. Stockwell, Franklin W. Goza Jul 2007

Racial Differences In The Relationship Between Infant Mortality And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Stamper Balistreri, Edward G. Stockwell, Franklin W. Goza

Sociology Faculty Publications

This study presents an ecological analysis of the relationship between infant mortality and economic status by race in metropolitan Ohio, using census data on mother's residence and economic status determined by the percentage of low-income families living in each area. The analysis updates previous studies as white-non-white comparisons for total infant mortality are examined for the US censuses of 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000; and more detailed period- and broad cause-specific rates are presented for 2000. A pronounced inverse association is consistently found between income status and infant mortality for whites, while for non-whites this pattern first emerges in …

Fluctuating Two-State Light Harvesting In A Photosynthetic Membrane, Duohai Pan, Dehong Hu, Ruchuan Liu, Xiaohua Zeng, Samuel Kaplan, H. Peter Lu Jun 2007

Fluctuating Two-State Light Harvesting In A Photosynthetic Membrane, Duohai Pan, Dehong Hu, Ruchuan Liu, Xiaohua Zeng, Samuel Kaplan, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The mechanism by which light is converted into chemical energy in a natural photosynthetic system has drawn considerable research interest. Using fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopic imaging, we have observed fluctuating intermolecular protein fluorescence resonant energy transfers (FRET) among light-harvesting proteins I and II (LH1 and LH2) in bacterial photosynthetic membranes. Using two-channel, FRET, photon-counting detection and a novel, two-dimensional cross-correlation function amplitude-mapping analysis, we revealed fluorescence intensity and spectral fluctuations of donor (LH2) and acceptor (LH1) fluorescence involving FRET. Our results suggest that there are dynamic coupled and noncoupled states of the light-harvesting protein assemblies in photosynthetic membranes. The light-harvesting …

Injury Rates During Water-Based Wilderness Recreation, G. Dean Witman May 2007

Injury Rates During Water-Based Wilderness Recreation, G. Dean Witman

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study came about after the author approached several people in the wilderness-recreation field about their risk-management practices, especially those related to training people who lead trips involving water exposure. The author was surprised that no widely accepted standards exist for training trip leaders or for the skills they need to deal with cases of water emergency. Some people even speculated that injury rates would increase if more water-safety training were conducted because injury rates during land-based activities were assumed to be greater. Although it was outside the scope of this effort to test all current opinions about wilderness water …

Competitive Anxiety In Lifesavers And Swimmers, Eleftheria Avramidou, Stathis Avramidis, Remco Pollman May 2007

Competitive Anxiety In Lifesavers And Swimmers, Eleftheria Avramidou, Stathis Avramidis, Remco Pollman

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study examined state and trait anxiety in lifesavers and swimmers. They completed the SAS and the CSAI-2d before a training and the CSAI-2d again before a competition. Lifesavers were found to have lower levels of cognitive and somatic anxiety than competitive swimmers. Both groups were found to have lower levels of self-confidence but higher levels of somatic anxiety before a competition in comparison to regular training sessions. Lifesavers found their levels of somatic anxiety to be more facilitative than the swimmers did. Both groups perceived that higher levels of self-confidence to be more facilitative before competition than before training. …

Curriculum Development For Teaching Swimming In Hungary, Laszlo Revesz, Jozsef Bognar, Marina I. Salvara, Szilvia Gita, Melinda Biro

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Given the lack of publications describing changing curricular matters and the role of teaching and learning swimming in Hungary, the purpose of this study was to analyze the curricula of 1995, 2001, and 2003. It also was the authors’ goal to examine the role and place of swimming instruction in school education and provide discussion points to promote further review and the possible effects on teaching methodology and skill acquisition. The authors analyzed the Hungarian curricula for the years 1995, 2001, and 2003 based on records, official documents, administrative texts, and formal reports on curricular structures and applications. They concluded …

Metabolic-Cost Comparison Between Submaximal Land And Aquatic Treadmill Exercise, Erin Rutledge, W. Matthew Silvers, Kathy Browder, Dennis Dolny May 2007

Metabolic-Cost Comparison Between Submaximal Land And Aquatic Treadmill Exercise, Erin Rutledge, W. Matthew Silvers, Kathy Browder, Dennis Dolny

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Purpose: To evaluate the metabolic cost of varying aquatic treadmill (ATM) exercise speed and water-jet resistance and compare with land treadmill (TM) conditions at similar running speeds. Methods: 15 participants (7 men, 8 women, age 22 + 4 years, height 173 + 8 cm, weight 66.9 + 9 kg) submerged to the xiphoid process completed nine 5-min submaximal ATM trials at 174-, 201-, and 228-m/min treadmill speeds with water-jet resistances set at 0%, 50%, and 75% of capacity. Oxygen consumption (VO2), expired ventilation (VE[BTPS]), tidal volume (VT), breath frequency (f), heart rate (HR), oxygen (O2), pulse, and ratings of perceived …

Chest- And Waist-Deep Aquatic Plyometric Training And Average Force, Power, And Vertical-Jump Performance, Michael G. Miller, Chris C. Cheatham, Amanda R. Porter, Mark D. Ricard, Denyse Hennigar, David C. Berry May 2007

Chest- And Waist-Deep Aquatic Plyometric Training And Average Force, Power, And Vertical-Jump Performance, Michael G. Miller, Chris C. Cheatham, Amanda R. Porter, Mark D. Ricard, Denyse Hennigar, David C. Berry

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare effects of chest- and waist-deep water aquatic plyometrics on average force, power and vertical jump. Methods: Twenty-nine male and female participants were assigned to either a control group or 1 of 2 aquatic groups (waist deep and chest deep) and participated in a 6-wk, twice per wk plyometric training program. Average force and power were measured on a force plate using 3 jumps: squat, countermovement, and drop jump. Vertical-jump heights were also recorded. A repeated-measures ANOVA was used to determine significant differences between testing and groups on average force, power and …
