The Effect Of Water Walking On The Lower Limb Motion Of Older Adults, Adriana M. Degani, Alessander Danna-Dos-Santos Aug 2007

The Effect Of Water Walking On The Lower Limb Motion Of Older Adults, Adriana M. Degani, Alessander Danna-Dos-Santos

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The authors investigated the lower limb movements for older adults walking at their preferred speed in shallow water to obtain information to help professionals prescribe exercises in a pool. The 8 participants presented a) similar hip and thigh motions in water and on land, although a reduced thigh velocity was observed in the water; b) increased knee flexion at the beginning of the walking cycle and reduced knee extension throughout the walking cycle in water; c) reduced ankle motion throughout the walking cycle and plantar flexion during the swing phase in water; d) reduced shank motion and velocity in water; …

The 4w Model Of Drowning, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David J. Llewellyn Aug 2007

The 4w Model Of Drowning, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David J. Llewellyn

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of the study was to develop a conceptual model of drowning incidents. The authors conducted qualitative content analysis of drowning-incident videos (n = 41), and semi-structured interviews of those involved in drowning incidents (n = 34), followed by the measurement of frequencies and Boolean search with matrix intersection. Results confirmed that when there is human activity in, above, or around an aquatic environment, a drowning incident may occur to whomever, wherever, and under whatever circumstance. Factors that determined drowning outcome were, in order of importance, rescuer characteristics (Who1), casualty characteristics (Who2), location (Wherever), and general circumstances (Whatever). The …

The Role Of Teaching Swimming In The Formation Of A Conscious Healthy Lifestyle, Melinda Bíró, Balázs Fügedi, Laszlo Revesz

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Swimming plays a particularly important role in the formation of physical, mental and spiritual well-being and in the preservation of health. The aim of this study was to investigate whether health-based education works through swimming-education. A survey was carried out by submitting an anonymous questionnaire to swimming educators (N = 46). The sample consisted of people who teach swimming to primary school pupils: physical education teachers, swimming instructors, lifeguards, swimming coaches (PE teachers 58,7%, instructors and others 41,3%, men 58,7%, women 41,3%). Both a descriptive and a comparative approach were used to analyze data. Based on their inquiry, the authors …

Compliance With Best-Practice Water-Sanitation Policies By Pool Organizations, Paola Paez, Catherine Strohbehn Aug 2007

Compliance With Best-Practice Water-Sanitation Policies By Pool Organizations, Paola Paez, Catherine Strohbehn

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Outbreaks of illness from recreational waters underscore the need for knowledge about proper water treatment. A survey was sent to pool operators in one state (N = 829; responses = 219) requesting information about the person in charge and presence of operational policies and maintenance practices related to water quality and sanitation. Policies were in existence, yet significant differences were found between public and privately owned, as well as indoor and outdoor pools. Most facilities (95%) had a certified pool operator employed on-site. Findings showed that current methods of disseminating information about water quality and sanitation to pool operators were …

Psychological Benefits Of Water Aerobics For Fibromyalgia Patients, Jamie E. Brass, Lynda Federoff Aug 2007

Psychological Benefits Of Water Aerobics For Fibromyalgia Patients, Jamie E. Brass, Lynda Federoff

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Individuals with fibromyalgia, a musculoskeletal syndrome, suffer from potentially debilitating symptoms that include pain, tenderness, and fatigue. Because symptoms of fibromyalgia are difficult for others to see, family members and practitioners may not believe the individual is suffering. The combination of a diagnosis of a debilitating disease and the disbelief of people in one’s life can lead to depression. Exercise has been shown to decrease physical and psychological symptoms in individuals with fibromyalgia. This study looks at the psychological benefit of water aerobics in individuals with fibromyalgia. Significant decreases in pain and depression scores were found at post-test and follow-up, …
