Green Synthesis Of Polycyclic Benzimidazole Derivatives And Organic Semiconductors, Masashi Mamada, Cesar Perez-Bolivar, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Polycyclic benzimidazole derivatives, an important class of compounds in organic electronics and photovoltaics, were prepared using a solvent-free "green" process based on heating carboxylic acid anhydrides and arylene diamines in the presence of zinc acetate in the solid state. Products were isolated and purified directly by train sublimation of the crude reaction mixtures. The reaction conditions were optimized using various carboxylic acid anhydrides. Optical and electrochemical properties of these materials are also described.

Drowning Deaths In The Nearshore Marine Waters Of The Island Of Kauai, Hawaii 1970-2009, Charles Troy Blay
Drowning Deaths In The Nearshore Marine Waters Of The Island Of Kauai, Hawaii 1970-2009, Charles Troy Blay
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Drowning is the number one cause of unintentional injury death on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Steep submarine slopes, large waves, and variable coastlines combine to create hazardous conditions year round. Most victims (3/4) have been visitors (avg. age 46.2 years; 85% male), dying at more than 40 coastal localities. From 1970 to 2009, 300 people died at the island’s coastline, the death rate increasing from 5.5/yr (1970-79) to 10.1/yr (2000-09). Paradoxically, the number of lifeguards increased from a handful at two 1970’s stations to 45 at 10 stations by 2009. Kauai County provides lifeguards; the State of Hawaii emphasizes …

Where The Evidence And Expert Opinion Meet: A Review Of Open-Water Recreational Safety Messages, Kevin Moran, Linda Quan, Richard Franklin, Elizabeth Bennett
Where The Evidence And Expert Opinion Meet: A Review Of Open-Water Recreational Safety Messages, Kevin Moran, Linda Quan, Richard Franklin, Elizabeth Bennett
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Open water aquatic recreation is a significant cause of drowning, especially in developed countries that have easy access to aquatic environments. To simplify the plethora of safety messages promoted worldwide, 18 experts from 12 countries formed the International Task Force on Open Water Drowning Prevention (ITFDP) and published 16 generic, non-boating, open water safety messages. This paper examines the supporting evidence for the messages and makes recommendations for future research. A systematic review was undertaken of the literature published from 1990 to 2010. Task force members were also asked to provide the Secretariat with organizational recommendations or the evidence base …
Predictors Of Swimming Skill Of Primary School Children In Rural Thailand, Orapin Laosee, Julie Gilchrist, Jiraporn Khiewyoo, Ratana Somrongthong, Chitr Sitthi-Amorn
Predictors Of Swimming Skill Of Primary School Children In Rural Thailand, Orapin Laosee, Julie Gilchrist, Jiraporn Khiewyoo, Ratana Somrongthong, Chitr Sitthi-Amorn
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Drowning is a leading cause of childhood deaths in Asian countries. Children in primary school have a high rate of fatal drowning. These fatal drownings commonly occur in natural water bodies near the child’s residence. The 2004 Thai National Injury Survey reported a higher rate of drowning death in rural settings. While swimming skill is recommended to decrease drowning risk, there is a lack of information on factors contributing to a child’s swimming skill. This study assesses guardians’ perceptions of the swimming skill of rural primary school children and identifies associated risk and protective factors. A cross-sectional household survey was …

WebFR3D is the on-line version of 'Find RNA 3D' (FR3D), a program for annotating atomic-resolution RNA 3D structure files and searching them efficiently to locate and compare RNA 3D structural motifs. WebFR3D provides on-line access to the central features of FR3D, including geometric and symbolic search modes, without need for installing programs or downloading and maintaining 3D structure data locally. In geometric search mode, WebFR3D finds all motifs similar to a user-specified query structure. In symbolic search mode, WebFR3D finds all sets of nucleotides making user-specified interactions. In both modes, users can specify sequence, sequence-continuity, base pairing, base-stacking and other …

By 2015, it is estimated that nearly half of those living with HIV in the US will be 50 years of age and older. This dramatic change in the demographics of this clinical population represents unique challenges for patients, health care providers, and society-at-large. Fortunately, because of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and healthy lifestyle choices, it is now possible for many infected with HIV to age successfully with this disease; however, this depends upon one’s definition of successful aging. It is proposed that successful aging is composed of eight factors: length of life, biological health, cognitive efficiency, mental health, …

Direct Interaction Of Flix And Flbd Is Required For Their Regulatory Activity In Caulobacter Crescentus, Zhaohui Xu, Rachel J. Dutton, James W. Gober
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: The temporal and spatial expression of late flagellar genes in Caulobacter crescentus is activated by the transcription factor FlbD and its partner trans-acting factor FliX. The physical interaction of these two proteins represents an alternative mechanism for regulating the activity of sigma(54) transcription factors. This study is to characterize the interaction of the two proteins and the consequences of the interaction on their regulatory activity. Results: FliX and FlbD form stable complexes, which can stand the interference of 2.65 M NaCl. The stability of FliX and FlbD was affected by the co-existence of each other. Five FliX mutants (R71A, …

Rock-Based Fisher Safety Promotion: Five Years On, Kevin Moran
Rock-Based Fisher Safety Promotion: Five Years On, Kevin Moran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
In 2006, a safety campaign was launched in Auckland, New Zealand to combat a spate of drowning incidents associated with fishing from rocky foreshores. This paper provides data from surveys of fishers from 2006-10 to determine if preventive behaviors have been adopted after five years of safety promotion. The most significant change in self-reported behavior related to the increased use of life jackets with 34% (95% CI = 0.25-0.44) of fishers in 2010 compared with 72% (95% CI = 0.66-0.77) in 2006 reporting never wearing a life jacket. Some risky behavior (such as consuming alcohol) and at-risk attitudes (such as …

Self-Reported Supervisory Behavior And Belief Vs. Actual Observations Of Caregiver Behavior At Beaches, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich, Caroline F. Finch
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study examined self-reported supervisory behaviours of caregivers at beaches and ascertained whether self-reported supervision reflects observed behaviour. Observations were conducted of caregiver/child pairs at 18 Australian beaches, with questionnaires subsequently completed by caregivers. Caregivers identified visual contact as essential for close supervision and proximity a key determinant in distinguishing supervision and close supervision. Supervisory behaviour was associated with child age, whilst lifeguard patrol had no effect on supervision. All supervision statements from the PSAPQ-BEACH were associated with supervision. Only three statements were significant independent predictors of supervision. Comparisons suggest caregivers’ self-reported supervisory behaviour reflects actual supervision. As this is …

Parent/Caregiver Lack Of Knowledge: A Barrier For Youth Swimming Ability?, Timothy D. Ryan, Carol C. Irwin, Joris Drayer, Richard L. Irwin
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study examined how a parent’s lack of knowledge of potential opportunities and barriers may restrict the child’s opportunity to learn how to swim. A survey was completed in multiple urban areas (N=524), where parents/caregivers reported their child’s swimming ability, as well as the parent’s knowledge of possible barriers to their child’s participation in swimming. ANOVA results suggested that the only significant difference between the presence of barriers groupings for child’s swimming ability were based on the availability of a pool and ease of access. For potential barriers examined, the group who lacked of barriers had a significantly lower perception …
