Gender Differences In Metabolic Responses During Water Walking, Koichi Kaneda, Yuji Ohgi, Chiaki Tanaka
Gender Differences In Metabolic Responses During Water Walking, Koichi Kaneda, Yuji Ohgi, Chiaki Tanaka
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to compare metabolic responses between men and women during water walking. Japanese men (27-73 yr, n = 26) and women (33-70 yr, n = 14) performed water walking at 25 m/min, 30 m/min and 35 m/min. Oxygen consumption (VO2), VO2 per weight (VO2/W), respiratory ventilation (VE), heart rate (HR), energy expenditure (EE), EE per weight (EE/W), and actual walking speed were analyzed at each velocity. VO2/W and EE/W were higher in women compared to men. However, VO2 and EE showed similar values between men and women. HRs were significantly higher for women than those …
Swimming In New Waters: Profiling K-12 Aquatic Physical Activity In Florida As A Viable Lifesaving Force In Physical Education, Angela Beale, Susan Lynn
Swimming In New Waters: Profiling K-12 Aquatic Physical Activity In Florida As A Viable Lifesaving Force In Physical Education, Angela Beale, Susan Lynn
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to conduct an online survey to answer the key question, “What is the current status of aquatic physical activity (APA) in physical education programs in Florida’s public schools?” The results showed that though APA use within physical education was minimal, physical education professionals who responded in this study used and valued the use of APA in their physical education programs. Moreover, physical education professionals find the use of APA beneficial for all students in K-12 physical education. Though the current study did not address the reasons that teachers did not have APA as a …

Effects Of Teaching Methods On Swimming Skill Acquisition In Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder, Susan Oh, Melissa Licari, Brendan Lay, Brian Blanksby
Effects Of Teaching Methods On Swimming Skill Acquisition In Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder, Susan Oh, Melissa Licari, Brendan Lay, Brian Blanksby
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study compared the delivery of “verbal and visual” with “verbal, visual and tactile” swimming instruction to small groups of DCD pupils for front crawl and backstroke performance across 10 lessons x 30 minutes/week. The interaction and main effects for group and time on front crawl performances were not significant, indicating no differences were found between the two teaching methods. Also, the front crawl performances of the DCD swimmers did not change over the intervention period. The interaction and main effect for group on backstroke performances over the 10 weekly lessons were not significant. However, a significant main effect of …
What African Americans Can Do To Bridge The Swimming Gap: A Call To Action, Steven Waller, Dawn M. Norwood
What African Americans Can Do To Bridge The Swimming Gap: A Call To Action, Steven Waller, Dawn M. Norwood
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Over the last ten years, the gap in swimming participation between Whites and other minority groups has been well documented. Moreover, the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints to swimming participation by African Americans have been clearly delineated. With the challenges surrounding the minority swimming gap acknowledged, the impetus should now be on creating strategies to rectify the problem. This paper argues for a collective effort on the part of the African American community to ameliorate the swimming gap, thus lessening the senseless deaths associated with it. In this paper strategic actions are outlined including advocacy and the creation of viable …
The Impact Of An Aquatic Exercise Protocol On Physiologic Measures Within An Asthmatic Population, Kasee Hildenbrand, Timothy S. Freson, Celestina Barbosa-Leiker, Sara Nordio, Bruce E. Becker, Ashley J. Miller
The Impact Of An Aquatic Exercise Protocol On Physiologic Measures Within An Asthmatic Population, Kasee Hildenbrand, Timothy S. Freson, Celestina Barbosa-Leiker, Sara Nordio, Bruce E. Becker, Ashley J. Miller
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Individuals suffering from asthma typically have subnormal exercise tolerance and poor physical fitness. The purpose of this case series study was to examine the impact of a new aquatic exercise protocol on physiological variables in a group of asthmatics. Participants were medically diagnosed and managed asthmatics in a rural community. A total of 8 males and 12 females were accepted into the study with 7 males and 9 females completing the 12-week study. Physiological measures were taken pre- and posttreatment with paired t-tests used for analyses. Increases in VO2max (pre-treatment mean (M) = 31.244 SD = 9.772; post-treatment M = …
Racing Start Safety: Head Depth And Head Speed During Competitive Backstroke Starts, Andrew C. Cornett, Josh C. White, Brian V. Wright, Alexander P. Wilmott, Joel M. Stager
Racing Start Safety: Head Depth And Head Speed During Competitive Backstroke Starts, Andrew C. Cornett, Josh C. White, Brian V. Wright, Alexander P. Wilmott, Joel M. Stager
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Research on competitive swim start safety has focused on starts involving a dive from above the water surface. The purpose of this study was to determine the depths, speeds, and distances attained when executing backstroke starts, which begin in the water, and to investigate whether or not these variables are a function of age. Backstroke starts (n = 122) performed in 1.22 m of water during competition were stratified according to age group (8&U, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15&O). Dependent measures were maximum depth of the center of the head (MHD), head speed at maximum head depth (SPD), and distance …
Responses Of Swimmers Caught In Rip Currents: Perspectives On Mitigating The Global Rip Current Hazard, Robert W. Brander, Anthony Bradstreet, Shauna Sherker, Jamie Macmahan
Responses Of Swimmers Caught In Rip Currents: Perspectives On Mitigating The Global Rip Current Hazard, Robert W. Brander, Anthony Bradstreet, Shauna Sherker, Jamie Macmahan
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Rip currents are the primary mechanism on many of the world’s beaches associated with rescues and drownings and have long been the focus of beachgoer education and awareness strategies. Traditional approaches to mitigating the rip current hazard typically provide information on escape procedures for beachgoers caught in a rip current. Several of these approaches are now being challenged by new scientific findings leading to uncertainty and debate amongst scientists and beach safety practitioners. This paper suggests that future research efforts on mitigating the rip current hazard should focus on quantifying the physical and behavioral responses of beachgoers who have been …

Noxious Stimuli Sensitivity In Regular Spicy Food Users And Non-Users: Comparison Of Visual Analog And General Labeled Magnitude Scaling, Mary-Jon Ludy, Richard D. Mattes
Noxious Stimuli Sensitivity In Regular Spicy Food Users And Non-Users: Comparison Of Visual Analog And General Labeled Magnitude Scaling, Mary-Jon Ludy, Richard D. Mattes
Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications
The visual analog scale (VAS) and the general labeled magnitude scale (gLMS) are common response formats for assessing chemosensory sensation. The gLMS is recommended when comparing sensations between individuals whose perceptual experiences vary in a manner that may not be accurately captured on the VAS. This may occur when one group has a wider range of perceived intensity (e.g., bitterness in 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) tasters and non-tasters). The purpose of this study was to compare responses generated by the VAS and the gLMS following exposure to chemical, thermal, tactile, and auditory stimuli at intensity levels encountered in daily activities. Subjects were …
