Fulfilling The Promise Of Making A Difference: Creating Guards Of Life With Tpsr, Angela Kishaun Beale Aug 2012

Fulfilling The Promise Of Making A Difference: Creating Guards Of Life With Tpsr, Angela Kishaun Beale

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Consistently, the literature on minorities in aquatics identifies the challenges surrounding aquatic involvemen among minority populations. This same literature discusses the challenges of minority communities to provide affordable programs to combat these challenges. This reflective narrative describes a unique collaboration designed to provide high quality health and physical activity programs for youth in underserved communities. Health and physical activity professionals (HPE) strive to build collaborative relationships with community-based organizations (CBOs) and underserved school districts through educational experiences necessary for effective teaching and professional commitment. Project Guard: Make A Splash E.N.D. (End Needless Drowning) was one such program. Anchored in a …

Swimming And Water Safety: Reaching All Children In Australian Primary Schools, Timothy Joseph Lynch Aug 2012

Swimming And Water Safety: Reaching All Children In Australian Primary Schools, Timothy Joseph Lynch

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Data gathered indicates that reduction in annual Australian drowning fatalities for not only children, but people of all ages, have hit a plateau, and if anything, figures suggest that deaths in recent years are on the increase. It is alarming that figures are not falling despite the many well developed swimming and water safety education programs available. The number of drowning deaths in Australia are regarded by governing bodies as far too many, hence it is proposed that the necessary changes required to further reduce drowning may involve teachers within primary schools being used more efficiently in the educational process. …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of this review was to summarize the level of evidence and grades of recommendation regarding therapeutic aquatic exercise interventions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. We conducted a systematic search to identify relevant studies published from 1996 until 2010. Methodological quality of trials was assessed using the Delphi list and the grades of recommendation according to the DUODECIM (Finnish Medical Society Duodecim). The reviewed articles covered incremental therapeutic aquatic exercise with an intensity ranging from 50% to 90% of VO2max with sessions of 30 to 50 minutes 2-5 days a week, for a total of 8-24 weeks …

Organizational Support And Communication: A Case Study Of A New Risk Management Tool For University Aquatic Supervision, Steven S. Mccune, Richard Hsiao, Robert Kostelnik Aug 2012

Organizational Support And Communication: A Case Study Of A New Risk Management Tool For University Aquatic Supervision, Steven S. Mccune, Richard Hsiao, Robert Kostelnik

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Research of in-service training and risk management strategies suggests that there are dysfunctions among employees that have a lack of team understanding about risk management and risk plans (Ammon & Brown, 2007; Hsiao & Kostelnik, 2009). Furthermore, theorists who study the dynamics of employee-employer relationships provide evidence that strong interpersonal support fosters a healthy staff mentality with regard to organizational goal commitment (Eisenburger et al. 1986). A seven-point Likert questionnaire was administered to 15 student lifeguards at one Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Division II institution. Twenty-four questions identified three dependent variables, two relating to organizational support and one …

Acid Rain Effects On Preservation Of Lake Erie Ostracod Shells, Joanna Hamilton May 2012

Acid Rain Effects On Preservation Of Lake Erie Ostracod Shells, Joanna Hamilton

Honors Projects

The primary object of this research is to provide a set of data that indicates whether or not humans are having a significant impact on the potential future fossil record of freshwater ostracods due to acid rain. To collect this data, the author will construct a model fossil record for the ostracod assemblages in an area of Lake Erie. In this model the author will explore the differences before and after human involvement/contamination/degradation of the surrounding environment and acidification/ contamination of Lake Erie. The author will conduct several taphonomic experiments taking into account factors such as nitric acid levels and …

Can You Swim? Self-Report And Actual Swimming Competence Among Young Adults In Ballarat, Australia, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich, G. Keith Mcelroy, Jack Harvey, Kevin Moran May 2012

Can You Swim? Self-Report And Actual Swimming Competence Among Young Adults In Ballarat, Australia, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich, G. Keith Mcelroy, Jack Harvey, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This paper reports the Australian findings in an international study comparing self-reported and actual swimming and aquatic skills of young adults. Physical Education and Sports Sciences students (n=263) completed the “Can You Swim?” self-report survey and practical skills assessment, unaware that the practical tests replicated survey items. Relationships for comparisons between practical tests and their matched survey item were weak, indicating participants had inaccurate perceptions of their own swimming skills. Typically, they underestimated their competence in terms of distance and fundamental aquatic skills. Understanding of what constitutes different levels of swimming ability was poor, for example, most participants identified as …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Little is known about the relationship between real and perceived water competence among youth in the context of drowning prevention or of their perceptions of their risk of drowning. This study reports the findings of an international project entitled Can You Swim? The participants (n = 373) were assessed in a two-part study using an initial questionnaire survey to provide self-estimates of water competency and risk perception, followed by six practical tests in the water. Correlation coefficients between perceived and real swimming competency (rs = 0.369) and floating (rs = 0.583) were significant, but only moderate in strength. No significant …

Teaching Competitive Racing Starts: Practices And Opinions Of Professional Swim Coaches, Andrew C. Cornett, Josh C. White, Brian V. Wright, Joel Stager

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of coaches’ perceptions regarding the most important elements of the competitive swim start and the progressions coaches use to teach the skill to novice swimmers. A survey was developed specifically for this project and administered via an email link sent to all registered USA Swimming coaches. The final survey elicited 471 responses. When coaches were asked if a progression was used when teaching starts, 4.6% reported using a written checklist, 89.8 % a mental one, and 5.5% none at all. Of those that used a progression to teach racing …

Swim Instructor Beliefs About Toddler And Pre-School Swimming And Water Safety Education, Jennifer D. Blitvich, Kevin Moran, Lauren A. Petrass, G. Keith Mcelroy, Teresa Stanley May 2012

Swim Instructor Beliefs About Toddler And Pre-School Swimming And Water Safety Education, Jennifer D. Blitvich, Kevin Moran, Lauren A. Petrass, G. Keith Mcelroy, Teresa Stanley

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

To study the teacher component of the parent-teacher-learner triad in preschool aquatics and explore compatibility of instructor messages with current drowning prevention beliefs, 133 preschool aquatics instructors were surveyed. Instructors with basic swim teacher accreditation and those with a preschool/infant instructor extension (“Extension”) were compared. More Extension instructors selected “safety” as an important outcome (χ2 = 7.907, df = 3, p = 0.048). Both instructor groups considered parental education important but Extension instructors held this view more strongly. Disturbingly, more Extension instructors disagreed that increased toddler confidence following lessons necessitates greater supervision around water (χ2 = 4.141, df = 1, …
