Different Immersion Temperature's Impact Upon Blood Pressure Of Individuals With Varied Sex And Age, Kasee Hildenbrand, Celestina Barbosa-Leiker, Daniel Melchior Nov 2012

Different Immersion Temperature's Impact Upon Blood Pressure Of Individuals With Varied Sex And Age, Kasee Hildenbrand, Celestina Barbosa-Leiker, Daniel Melchior

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Warm water immersion is known to have an effect on human cardiovascular function. This study examines how age (young = 18-30 years and older = 31-65 years) and sex influence changes in blood pressure due to submersion in different water temperatures. Fifty-eight individuals sat immersed to the neck in three different water temperature tanks. Blood pressure measurements (systolic/diastolic blood pressure [SBP/DBP], pulse pressure [PP] and heart rate [HR]) were collected every 6 minutes throughout the duration of the test. We observed significant between-group, within-group, and interaction effects for SBP, DBP, and HR. For PP, significant between-group, within-in group and interaction …

Toddler Drowning Prevention: Teaching Parents About Child Cpr In Conjunction With Their Child’S In-Water Lessons, Kevin Moran, Teresa Stanley, Alicia Rutherford Nov 2012

Toddler Drowning Prevention: Teaching Parents About Child Cpr In Conjunction With Their Child’S In-Water Lessons, Kevin Moran, Teresa Stanley, Alicia Rutherford

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of the study was to develop a program that addressed parental misconceptions of child CPR. Parents (n = 109) of toddlers enrolled in swim school lessons were randomly assigned to control, pool-based instruction, and home-based groups. Initially, one third (30%) of parents were confident of their ability to perform child CPR and only one fifth (22%) correctly reported the recommended compression-to-rescue breath ratio of 30:2 for child CPR. Postintervention, confidence and knowledge of CPR protocols improved significantly for both instruction groups compared with the control group. Correct compression-to-breath ratios significantly improved for the pool-based group (86%) and home-based …

"The Impulse To Rescue": Rescue Altruism And The Challenge Of Saving The Rescuer, John Hemsley Pearn, Richard Charles Franklin Nov 2012

"The Impulse To Rescue": Rescue Altruism And The Challenge Of Saving The Rescuer, John Hemsley Pearn, Richard Charles Franklin

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Rescuers who drown sacrifice their lives so that another might live; these drowning deaths are a particular challenge to prevent. In this research from Australia and the literature, we dissect and discuss the elements of “rescue altruism.” This 18-year critical incident population study identified 103 victims who drowned while attempting a rescue. In 74% of cases the primary "victim" (rescuee) survived, 50% of rescuers were visitors not familiar with the water hazard; 67% of the drowned rescuers were related to the primary victim. None were professionally trained in aquatic rescue. We propose that rescue altruism is composed of (a) an …

Intra-Individual Head Depth Variability During The Competitive Swim Start, Andrew C. Cornett, Hiroki Naganobori, Joel M. Stager Nov 2012

Intra-Individual Head Depth Variability During The Competitive Swim Start, Andrew C. Cornett, Hiroki Naganobori, Joel M. Stager

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The research on the competitive swim start primarily consists of group mean and maximum depths with little attention given to individual variability. The purpose of this study was to quantify intra-individual racing start depth variability and use it to assess minimum water depth standards. Twenty-two competitive swimmers executed five racing starts into a water depth of 3.66 m. Intra-individual variability was quantified by taking the standard deviation of the maximum depth of the center of the head for the five racing starts executed by each swimmer. The mean value was 0.09 m with a standard deviation of 0.06 m. Analysis …

Surf Bather Drowning Risk And Exposure-Related Factors Identified By An Expert Panel, Damian Morgan, Joan Ozanne-Smith Nov 2012

Surf Bather Drowning Risk And Exposure-Related Factors Identified By An Expert Panel, Damian Morgan, Joan Ozanne-Smith

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In the absence of an established literature, identifying and quantifying surf bather drowning risk factors requires a clearly defined problem-focused research strategy. To initiate this strategy, nominal group technique (NGT) was used to identify and rank risk and water exposure-related factors based on consensus of an expert panel. The results identified, in order, level of experience (encompassing swimming ability in surf conditions), lack of local knowledge (encompassing awareness of surf hazards, including rip currents), and surf conditions (encompassing prevailing wave height and rip currents) as the three most influential surf bather drowning risk factors. Factors most influential on exposure to …

Hydration Status Of Lifesaving Athletes During International Competition, Wade Sinclair, Nick J. Marshall Nov 2012

Hydration Status Of Lifesaving Athletes During International Competition, Wade Sinclair, Nick J. Marshall

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study investigated the hydration status of lifesaving athletes in situ during an International competition. Participants were 10 lifesaving athletes (6 male and 4 female) competing in pool- and ocean-based competition across three consecutive days. Assessment included upon-waking urine samples and body mass across 7 days including travel, training and competition days. Urine specific gravity was significantly lower while traveling compared to predeparture (p < 0.05). There were no gender differences for sweat rates, body mass changes, fluids consumed or percentage dehydration during the training sessions (p > 0.05). Sweat rates were higher than previously reported and there were no significant differences identified for daily body mass changes (p > 0.05). The results of the current study found that lifesaving athletes were capable of maintaining …

Legal Tolerance Toward The Business Lie And The Puffery Defense: The Questionable Assumptions Of Contract Law, M. Neil Browne, Kathleen M.S. Hale, Maureen Cosgrove

Economics Faculty Publications

American contract law is supposed to facilitate the efficiency and fairness of market transactions between parties. Does the increasing success of the puffery defense in false advertising and securities cases further the fairness of transactions between companies with major advertising budgets and consumers? This Article contends that it does not.

Tweeting For Learning: A Critical Analysis Of Research On Microblogging In Education Published In 2008-2011, Fei Gao, Tian Luo, Ke Zhang

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

This study critically analyzed the current body of published research on microblogging in education (MIE) to build a deep and comprehensive understanding of this increasingly popular phenomenon. Twenty-one studies on MIE in 2008-2011 were selected based on the selection criteria and analyzed to answer the following questions: (a) What types of research have been published on MIE? (b) How was microblogging used for teaching and learning in these studies? (c) What educational benefits did microblogging have on teaching and learning? and (d) What suggestions and implications did the current research have for future MIE research and practices? The analysis suggested …
