Adolescent Literacy In The Common Core Classroom, Kelsey Montgomery
Adolescent Literacy In The Common Core Classroom, Kelsey Montgomery
Honors Projects
This project focuses on the advantages of utilizing reading fluency assessments and targeted reading instruction in adolescent language arts classrooms. Typically, as students progress beyond about sixth grade, many teachers do not continue to instruct and assess students specifically on their reading fluency; however, research shows that continuing to focus on these skills is beneficial to students, especially with the increased pressures for students to be "college and career ready" from forces such as the Common Core State Standards. Learning to read is a skill that grows as students grow - the data in this project shows that when students …

Tonb Not Directly Related To Efflux Of Antibiotics In E. Coli, Amber Gombash
Tonb Not Directly Related To Efflux Of Antibiotics In E. Coli, Amber Gombash
Honors Projects
Studies in Pseudomonas aeruginosa have suggested that the TonB energy transduction system directly contributes to efflux-mediated antibiotic resistance, ostensibly by energizing one or more efflux systems. We have found ∆tonB strains of Escherichia coli to similarly be more sensitive to certain antibiotics relative to wild-type strains. To test the hypothesis that this enhanced sensitivity involved the energization of efflux systems, sensitivity patterns for a variety of antibiotics were evaluated using a set of strains differentially lacking genes encoding the Acr efflux system, the universal outer membrane efflux portal TolC, and TonB. No correlation was evident between the resistance phenotypes of …

Peers Helping Peers: A Model For Planning A Support Group For Women Struggling With Eating Disorders, Jennifer Sims
Peers Helping Peers: A Model For Planning A Support Group For Women Struggling With Eating Disorders, Jennifer Sims
Honors Projects
Women are constantly bombarded with images that advertise unrealistic beauty standards. These negative portrayals of women often lead to negative self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, unhealthy dieting, extreme exercising and—in more extreme cases—the development of eating disorders (ED). When treating EDs, practitioners often turn to Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT) as the first choice of intervention, but this treatment option lacks the key element of social support. This paper looks to create a model for planning a support group that balances CBT techniques with social support elements. Elements such as self-monitoring, progressive relaxation, homework, goal setting, and psychoeducation will be pulled from CBT models …
The Physiological Response On Immersion In Cold Water And The Cooling Rates On Swimming In A Group Of Children Aged 10 – 11 Years, Flora Bird, Jim House, Michael J. Tipton
The Physiological Response On Immersion In Cold Water And The Cooling Rates On Swimming In A Group Of Children Aged 10 – 11 Years, Flora Bird, Jim House, Michael J. Tipton
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Swimming is a popular sport in the United Kingdom (UK); however, cold water immersion often found in open waters in the UK is not without increased risk. Drowning is among the leading cause of accidental death in 1-14 year-olds in most countries. We examined whether children and adults exhibit similar cold shock responses; their rate of cooling while swimming; and subjective recognition of cooling. Nineteen children aged 10-11 years voluntarily undertook a 5 min static immersion in 15 °C (59 °F) water. Ten of them then completed a swim of up to 40 min. Resting heart rate, respiratory frequency and …
Comparison Of Four Feedback Methods Used To Help Improve Swimming Relay Exchanges - A Pilot Study, David Luedtke, Bridget Duoos
Comparison Of Four Feedback Methods Used To Help Improve Swimming Relay Exchanges - A Pilot Study, David Luedtke, Bridget Duoos
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Relays are a part of swimming competitions at all levels and are worth up to twice the points compared with individual events. Relay exchange technique may affect the final time and place of a relay team (Siders, 2010, 2012). The purpose of this pilot study was to compare four methods of feedback provided regarding relay exchanges (time only [TO], time and video [TV], video only [VO], or coach only [CO]) to determine which method had a greater effect on improving relay exchange times. Fifteen males (M age = 15.357 years, SD = 2.7; M height = 170.76 cm, SD = …

Australian Curriculum Reform: Treading Water Carefully?, Timothy Joseph Lynch
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the status of aquatics within the national Australian Health and Physical Education curriculum with a particular focus on the past decade. Swimming and water safety always has held a prominent place within Australia’s Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area throughout modern history. The first national school HPE curriculum framework has recently been released, representing a growing number of stakeholders and focus areas. This raises questions surrounding the content traditionally delivered in schools under the HPE umbrella and how the new curriculum may be enacted. Early signs, such as the release of …
Can You Swim In Clothes? Reflections On The Perception And Reality Of The Effect Of Clothing On Water Competency, Kevin Moran
Can You Swim In Clothes? Reflections On The Perception And Reality Of The Effect Of Clothing On Water Competency, Kevin Moran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
In the second phase of the project entitled Can You Swim in Clothes?, physical education students (n = 37) with known water proficiency completed an aquatics education program that included the wearing of clothes in simulated water survival activities. Using a modified version of Borg’s Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE), participants were asked to estimate their exertion levels prior to and after performing a range of clothing related water activities including a 50 m sprint, a 5 min survival swim, a 15 m underwater swim, and a 5 min survival float. Participants reported significantly higher exertion ratings postactivity than they …
Understanding Factors That Influence Fear Of Drowning In Children And Adolescents, Carol C. Irwin, Jennifer Renee Pharr, Richard L. Irwin
Understanding Factors That Influence Fear Of Drowning In Children And Adolescents, Carol C. Irwin, Jennifer Renee Pharr, Richard L. Irwin
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Fear of drowning is a strong predictor of no or low swim ability. This study’s purpose was to better understand fear of drowning among youth by examining personal, behavioral and environmental factors. Links between swimming participation, desire to improve swimming skills, swimming instruction method, and fear of drowning were also explored. Youth (n = 1,909) in six urban markets were surveyed at local YMCA branches. Level of agreement with fear of drowning (high fear [HF]; low fear L[F)] was cross analyzed with participation, desire to improve skills, instruction method, and selected personal, behavioral, and environmental factors. Significant differences emerged between …
Adaptation Of The Cold Shock Response And Cooling Rates On Swimming Following Repeated Cold Water Immersions In A Group Of Children Aged 10 – 12 Years, Flora Bird, Jim House, Michael J. Tipton
Adaptation Of The Cold Shock Response And Cooling Rates On Swimming Following Repeated Cold Water Immersions In A Group Of Children Aged 10 – 12 Years, Flora Bird, Jim House, Michael J. Tipton
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Habituation of the cold shock response, and adaptation in deep body cooling with prolonged cold water immersion is well documented in adults. This study aimed to determine whether children exhibit similar responses. Eight children aged 10-11 years underwent a 5 min static immersion in 15°C (59°F) water, five then swam for up to 40 minutes, before and after a year of regular cold water swim training. Following acclimatization, no differences were found in heart rates or respiratory frequencies on initial immersion, despite a smaller relative VO2. Children reported feeling warmer (p < .01) and more comfortable (p < .05), implying acclimatization of subjective perception of cold. No difference was found in cooling rates while swimming. On comparison with data of adults swimming in 12°C (36°F) water, no difference was found in cooling rates, but the trend in both acclimatized groups to a slower rate of cooling was significant (p < .026) when the data were pooled. These data may support a theory of insulative adaptation.

Tracking Fatal Drownings In Public Swimming Pools: A Retrospective Multiscale Investigation Within France, Elie Vignac, Pascal Lebihain, Bastien Soulé
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Regarding risks associated with activities of daily living, recreational activities tend to be major sources of domestic risks in France. We focused on fatal drownings in public swimming-pools, intending to quantify them. We conducted an exhaustive overview of information sources that counted the number of fatal drownings in French public swimming pools. Our results underscored that fact that in spite of using numerous databases, it was impossible to accurately quantify the total number of fatal drownings. Gaps in data collection originated as a result of five main methodological issues that are discussed in detail in this article. Shortcomings regarding fatal …

Comparison of Body Composition Assessment Techniques in Older Adult Females
Introduction: As the aging population increases, the need for accurate assessment of chronic disease risk also increases. There is considerable debate over the best way to assess this risk. BMI is a weight-to-height ratio that is commonly used to assess adiposity and obesity related risk. However, it does not differentiate lean (i.e., muscle and bone) versus fat mass – the true predictors of obesity-related diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease and diabetes). This is prevalent in post-menopausal women who often experience age-related gains in fat mass and losses in lean mass.
Methods: …

Older Adults And Technology: Adoption And Acceptance Comes From Relationships And Encouragement From Younger Generations, Casey Schonhardt, Kate Magsamen-Conrad
Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education Conference (2015)
As technology progresses, older generations are being given ‘smart’ devices and are adopting these devices to keep up with daily life. Stereotypes posit that the different generational groups perspectives on each other and the digital divide prohibit older generations from adopting new technologies. At the Wood Country Center on Aging located in Bowling Green Ohio, the small group communication class of Bowling Green State University teaches tablet classes once a week to interested older adults. Classes were observed using the STAM (Senior Technology and Acceptance Model), specifically the acceptance phase, over six weeks with narrative and phenomenological research methods. Observing …
