Prevalence Of Inadequate Hydration Levels In Aquatic Safety Personnel: A Pilot Study, William D. Ramos, Austin Robert Anderson, Allison Lee Fletcher Aug 2015

Prevalence Of Inadequate Hydration Levels In Aquatic Safety Personnel: A Pilot Study, William D. Ramos, Austin Robert Anderson, Allison Lee Fletcher

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Lifeguards play an important role in the security and safety of those they are hired to protect. A performance issue may arise if they succumb to circumstances that cause them to become physically or psychologically compromised. Dehydration is one issue that can result in decreased levels of workplace performance and pose personal health risks. Certified lifeguards 15 years old and older were tested for urine specific gravity (USG) to determine their place within the dehydration spectrum. Participants (N = 55) were recruited from seven test sites offering a variety of designs (indoor/outdoor, traditional/waterpark) and classifications (private, semipublic, public). Testing involved …

Youtube Videos And The Rip Current Hazard: Swimming In A Sea Of (Mis)Information, Katherine M. Mackellar, Robert W. Brander, Wendy S. Shaw

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Rip currents are strong, narrow, offshore flows found on many global beaches and contribute to hundreds of drownings and tens of thousands of rescues each year. Yet despite long-standing educational efforts, public understanding of rip currents is poor. YouTube represents a new visual-based social media platform with the potential to educate a large and global audience about the rip current hazard. This study analyzed the content of 256 rip current–related YouTube videos with over 5 million total views as of March 2, 2015 finding that the accuracy of information disseminated about rip currents on YouTube is mixed and of varying …

Comparison Of Capsaicin And Capsiate’S Effects At A Meal, Jenna M. Swint, Katrina M. Beining, Jennifer A. Bryant, Robin M. Tucker, Mary-Jon Ludy Aug 2015

Comparison Of Capsaicin And Capsiate’S Effects At A Meal, Jenna M. Swint, Katrina M. Beining, Jennifer A. Bryant, Robin M. Tucker, Mary-Jon Ludy

Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications

Capsaicin, the major pungent component of hot peppers, promotes negative energy balance; however, many individuals avoid capsaicin-containing foods due to pungency. Capsiate, a capsaicin analog found in CH-19 sweet peppers, is a non-pungent alternative that promotes negative energy balance when consumed as an encapsulated supplement. No studies have investigated capsiate’s effects on energy balance when consumed orally with a meal. This randomized crossover trial’s purpose was to compare effects of capsaicin and capsiate consumed orally at a meal. Participants were 24 healthy, lean individuals. Following capsaicin (2 mg), capsiate (2 mg), or control (no pepper) meals, appetitive sensations were recorded …

Exploring The Delivery Of Swimming And Water Safety Teacher Training To Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Communities, Melissa Anne Savage, Richard C. Franklin Aug 2015

Exploring The Delivery Of Swimming And Water Safety Teacher Training To Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Communities, Melissa Anne Savage, Richard C. Franklin

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The dearth of information on the delivery of specific culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) programs presents a major limitation in the effort to prevent drowning, particularly when drowning rates of people from countries other than Australia are increasing. This study describes programs delivered by the aquatic industry for CALD communities in New South Wales (NSW), explores what CALD communities believe their water safety education needs are, and evaluates AUSTSWIM’s current training methods to ascertain which is most effective when training candidates from CALD communities. We found an absence of specialized aquatic programs being run at aquatic facilities for CALD communities. …

Physiological And Psychophysical Aspects Of Shallow Water Exercise, Leo Joseph D'Acquisto, Laura Jean Miller, Debra Mary D'Acquisto, Karen Roemer, Mitchell Grant Fisher Aug 2015

Physiological And Psychophysical Aspects Of Shallow Water Exercise, Leo Joseph D'Acquisto, Laura Jean Miller, Debra Mary D'Acquisto, Karen Roemer, Mitchell Grant Fisher

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study investigated the cardiorespiratory responses to perceptually self-regulated shallow water exercise (SR-SWE) efforts. Females (26 ± 6 years) performed a series of SWE bouts prescribed at rating of perceived exertion (RPE) 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17 (Borg scale) and an incremental, SR-SWE bout to a max of RPE 20. Oxygen uptake (VO2) heart rate (HR), and blood lactate (BLa) were monitored. VO2, HR, and BLa ranged from 0.68 ± 0.13 l·min–1, 90 ± 16 bpm, 2.0 ± 0.7 mM (RPE 9) to 2.21 ± 0.21 l·min–1, 162 ± 11 bpm, and 3.9 ± 1.6 mM (RPE

Cardiorespiratory Responses To A 20-Minutes Shallow Water Tabata-Style Workout, Laura Jean Miller, Leo Joseph D'Acquisto, Debra Mary D'Acquisto, Karen Roemer, Mitchell Grant Fisher Aug 2015

Cardiorespiratory Responses To A 20-Minutes Shallow Water Tabata-Style Workout, Laura Jean Miller, Leo Joseph D'Acquisto, Debra Mary D'Acquisto, Karen Roemer, Mitchell Grant Fisher

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this study was to examine physiological responses to a 20-min Tabata-style shallow water exercise workout (TS-SWE). Volunteers (n = 9, females) had recently participated in an experiment (Experiment I) that measured, in part, peak oxygen uptake and heart rate (VO2 and HR) during SWE (D’Acquisto, Miller, D’Acquisto, Roemer, & Fisher, 2015). Peak VO2 and HR were used in the current

Hypoxic Blackout: Diagnosis, Risks, And Prevention, John H. Pearn, Richard C. Franklin, Amy E. Peden Aug 2015

Hypoxic Blackout: Diagnosis, Risks, And Prevention, John H. Pearn, Richard C. Franklin, Amy E. Peden

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Hypoxic blackout, also called underwater blackout syndrome, is a distinct and preventable cause of drowning. The sudden and unexpected death of a young, fit swimmer or diver, almost always male, necessitates the consideration of a differential diagnosis which includes four syndromes—preexistent cardiac disease, electrical conduction abnormalities, epilepsy, and hypoxic blackout. The pathophysiology of hypoxic blackout (overriding the carbon dioxide sensor by presubmersion hyperventilation) may be induced by autonomic conflict between cold shock diving reflexes in certain predisposed individuals. Death occurs in both public and private swimming pools and in the sea, and case series include those training for underwater hockey, …

Effect Of Peer Assessment On Project Performance Of Students At Different Learning Levels, Lan Li, Fei Gao Jun 2015

Effect Of Peer Assessment On Project Performance Of Students At Different Learning Levels, Lan Li, Fei Gao

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Peer assessment has been increasingly integrated in educational settings as a strategy to foster student learning. Yet little has been studied about how students at different learning levels may benefit from peer assessment. This study examined how peer assessment and students’ learning levels influenced students’ project performance by using a two-way factorial design. One hundred and thirty teacher education students participated in this quasi-experimental study. When working on a technology-integrated lesson plan project, the experimental group completed an online peer assessment process while the control group followed the traditional discussion method. Students’ learning levels were measured and divided into low-, …

I Know I Can: Feeling Confident About Discussing Cancer May Help Couples' Cancer Management, Kate Magsamen-Conrad, Maria K. Venetis, M. G. Checton, K. Greene

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

Managing chronic illness, especially something like cancer, affects more than the diagnosed person. Cancer also affects partners, families, and loved ones. In our study, we were interested in how cancer affects communication patterns between survivors and their partners. We wanted to apply a model that explains chronic illness management in couples to see if we could determine how parts of a relationship, uncertainty about cancer prognosis, and the confidence people have in talking with partners about the cancer affect couples’ ability to manage the disease.
