Comparison Of Beta-Lactamase Genes In Environmental Rahnella Isolates, Katherine D'Angelo, Ray A. Larsen Feb 2018

Comparison Of Beta-Lactamase Genes In Environmental Rahnella Isolates, Katherine D'Angelo, Ray A. Larsen

Honors Projects

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem in the field of healthcare. Antibiotics are becoming less effective as species of bacteria adapt and share resistance mechanisms. If transmission of mechanisms can be better understood at the molecular level, inhibitors could be developed to lessen the likelihood of antibiotic resistance. In this study, Rahnella spp were isolated from environmental sources on MacConkey plates containing 100 µg ml-1 ampicillin, and confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Whole genomic DNA was extracted from isolates and initial amplifications were performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers specific for 16S amplification. New primers were …

Understanding The Barriers To Optimal Nutrition In Uninsured And Underserved Adults At The Communitycare Free Medical Clinic In Toledo, Ohio, Elizabeth Bedell Marino, Hayavadhan Thuppal, Christopher Marino, Philip J. Welch

Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications

Background: Healthful eating habits are crucial for obesity prevention and are often lacking among the underserved and uninsured. The CommunityCare Free Medical Clinic (CCFMC) exists to serve the primary and preventive health care needs of uninsured and underserved residents of greater Toledo. The goal this study was to better understand the barriers to achieving optimal nutrition in the CCFMC patient population.

Methods: A series of five focus groups of CCFMC patients was conducted in July and August 2015 to better understand the underlying factors resulting in poor nutrition in this population. Participants (n=50) were between ages 18 - 65 and …

Commercializing Children: Laws And Regulations Affecting Advertisements Directed At Children In France, Spain, And Sweden, Neil M. Browne, Nancy K. Kubasek, Justin Rex, Robert Horton Jan 2018

Commercializing Children: Laws And Regulations Affecting Advertisements Directed At Children In France, Spain, And Sweden, Neil M. Browne, Nancy K. Kubasek, Justin Rex, Robert Horton

Economics Faculty Publications

From a financial perspective there may be no better investment, or more sensible target for advertising than one directed at the interests of children. This focus is perfectly understandable for a firm aiming to maintain a continually expanding and predictable source of profit. What children lack in spending power compared to other age groups, they make up for in potential longevity to consume, as well as their sheer amount of exposure to such advertising outlets, not only in hours spent, but in the various forms of technology to which they are regularly exposed. Children have an uncanny ability to mold …

Comparison Of Body Composition Measurements In Lean Female Athletes, Carly L. Houska, Jessica D. Kemp, Jamal S. Niles, Amy L. Morgan, Robin M. Tucker, Mary-Jon Ludy

School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies Faculty Publications

This study compared body composition measurements in lean female athletes. The primary objective was to compare the accuracy of percent body fat (%BF) determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), air-displacement plethysmography (ADP), and underwater weighing (UWW) in female Division I cheerleaders (n = 10 bases, 6 back-spots, and 12 flyers) from two universities. The secondary objective was to compare health risk predicted by %BF to body mass index (BMI) categorizations. UWW was considered the gold standard for assessing %BF. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to determine associations between methods. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to identify differences in …

Water Availability Influences Arthropod Water Demand, Hydration And Community Composition On Urban Trees, Kevin E. Mccluney, Thomas George, Steven D. Frank Jan 2018

Water Availability Influences Arthropod Water Demand, Hydration And Community Composition On Urban Trees, Kevin E. Mccluney, Thomas George, Steven D. Frank

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The drive for animals to regulate their water content can have significant consequences for food webs in xeric ecosystems. But the importance of animal water balance (gains vs losses) for mesic food webs has not been explored. Impervious surfaces in cities absorb and re-radiate solar radiation, raising local temperatures. Higher temperatures lead to greater rates of organismal water loss. Thus, urbanization of mesic regions may lead to greater likelihood of desiccation, with consequences for food webs. We tested the effects of animal water balance on a mesic urban food web by supplementing animal-available water (but not plant) within trees in …

Discipline With Emotion: Exploring The Influence Of Teacher Tone On Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of And Responses To Teacher Authority, Sarah Cashdollar Jan 2018

Discipline With Emotion: Exploring The Influence Of Teacher Tone On Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of And Responses To Teacher Authority, Sarah Cashdollar

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Popular preventative discipline programs often provide guidelines for ideal disciplinary interactions, emphasizing teachers’ use of a neutral, soft, warm, and/or loving tone of voice during student discipline. Yet the scholarly literature has suggested that there are alternative pedagogical ways of using emotional expression, including tone, to enhance student learning. For example, a long line of scholarship on African American educators (Delpit, 1996; Foster, 1991, 1997; Gordson, 1998; Irvine & Fraser, 1998; Monroe & Obidah, 2004; Patterson, Mickelson, Hester, & Wyrick, 2011; Ware, 2006) has found that some African American teachers use a direct, assertive, and strict disciplinary tone in the …

Expanding The Scope Of Teacher Education In An Attempt To Prevent Burnout Contagion, Aaron Samuel Zimmerman Jan 2018

Expanding The Scope Of Teacher Education In An Attempt To Prevent Burnout Contagion, Aaron Samuel Zimmerman

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Burnout is a significant problem that continues to plague the teaching profession. In this essay, I argue that the burnout of early-career teachers is not solely a function of personal factors (e.g., their knowledge, their beliefs, their pedagogical skills, their commitment to the teaching profession) but also a function of the organizational climates into which these early-career teachers enter. Specifically, burnout can be contagious, and, therefore, I argue that teacher educators must expand the scope of their efforts to include not only educating individual pre-service teachers but also revitalizing the organizational climates present within local schools.
