Coaches’ Perceptions Of Youth Resistance Training And Common Practices, Chelsea Legge
Coaches’ Perceptions Of Youth Resistance Training And Common Practices, Chelsea Legge
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Resistance training at the youth level can be beneficial if implemented correctly. Resistance training has been shown to be linked to better cardiovascular, bone health, psychosocial health and well-being, motor performance and sports performance, and reduce sports-related injuries (Zwolski, Yates, & Paterno, 2017). Faigenbaum (2010) listed five myths about youth resistance training. Despite being myths, many coaches are still hesitant to implement resistance training into youth programs. The goal of this study is to investigate theperceptions that coaches in the high school setting have on Faigenbaum’s myths and the NationalStrength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) guidelines. A quantitative study was administered …
Glucose Recovery In Collegiate Female Distance Swimmers: A Case Study On Exploring How Glucose Delivered Orally Affects Collegiate Distance Swimmers After Exercise, Elizabeth Mcnutt
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Objective: Use a case-study approach to explore blood glucose recovery times of collegiate female swimmers after swimming 1 mile and consuming different foods. Subjects: Four collegiate female long-distance swimmers ages 21 and 22. Procedure/Methods: Glucose tolerance testing indicates glucose impairment levels in the body while remaining minimally invasive. The swimmers reported at 6 am on different days, having only water for at least 4 hours prior to the study. The participants performed a prescribed warm up activity, then had their blood glucose levels measured using a Care Touch glucometer and McKesson 28G lancet before swimming 1 mile. After swimming, each …

This article shares findings from a descriptive, multiple case study assessing graduate outcomes 2.5 years after the completion of a teacher education program. Case study was used as an alternative to value-added measures to holistically examine complex attributes of effective teaching. Mixed methods data collection included graduate and supervisor surveys, self and supervisor evaluation of skills and dispositions, interviews, and classroom observations. Results indicated participants effectively applied the knowledge, skills, and dispositions the program was designed to achieve in the areas of Learner and Learning, Content, Instructional Practice, and Professional Responsibility. Three major recommendations emerged: 1) the necessity to develop …

Developing A Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Through The Use Of Diverse Literature And Perspective-Taking: A Resource Guide, Katie Dushek
Developing A Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Through The Use Of Diverse Literature And Perspective-Taking: A Resource Guide, Katie Dushek
Honors Projects
There is a growing diverse population in today’s secondary schools, yet the literary canon that is taught remains extremely white. Additionally, students today are rarely challenged to step into another’s shoes to see from a different perspective. With this lack of diversity in mind, I have created a resource guide with the goal of helping in-service and pre-service teachers to develop a more culturally relevant pedagogy through the use of diverse literature in their curriculum and the incorporation of more perspective-taking activities into their lessons. This guide provides a list of diverse books, recommendations on how to teach more diverse …

Children Learn What They Live: Addressing Early Childhood Trauma Resulting In Toxic Stress In Schools, Kate Mcgruder
Children Learn What They Live: Addressing Early Childhood Trauma Resulting In Toxic Stress In Schools, Kate Mcgruder
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Though there is extensive research on the health outcomes of individuals who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), society at large has not embraced this ground-breaking research and many still believe that the use of harsh punishment for students provides the same intended result as a discipline approach that teaches coping skills and the management of emotions. These traumatic experiences can result in toxic stress and create long term effects on children’s social-emotional and cognitive development that impair academic performance. This commentary will discuss trauma-informed educational practices have been developed to aid in recovery in the school environment.

Elementary Teacher Perceptions Of Professional Development On The Neuroscience Of Learning, Wendy Bana, Jeff Cranmore
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how knowledge on the neuroscience of learning may inform the practice of teaching and classroom instruction. Twelve purposively selected elementary teachers from a private school in California were asked about their perceptions of the nature of a professional development (PD) course on the neuroscience of learning and also their perceptions of the influence such training had on their practice. The conceptual framework for this study was Desimone and Garet’s (2015) model of effective professional development. Themes from semi structured interviews, focus groups, and observations of the teacher participants were identified …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Preparedness To Teach Students With Disabilities, Tara Kaczorowski, Sonia M. Kline
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Providing a meaningful education to all learners, including those with disabilities, is the responsibility of all educators. This study utilized a multi-method survey design to examine and compare general and special education teachers’ perceived preparedness to teach students with disabilities as well as the experiences each group believes contributed to that preparedness. Special education teachers’ rated themselves as more prepared for both instruction and social inclusion of students with disabilities than general education teachers, both after completing their undergraduate programs and after gaining teaching experience. While teachers across both groups valued similar experiences during their undergraduate programs, such as clinical …
Utilizing Family Systems Theory In College Readiness Counseling?, Bagmi Das, Beth H. Gilfillan
Utilizing Family Systems Theory In College Readiness Counseling?, Bagmi Das, Beth H. Gilfillan
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Postsecondary planning includes academic, emotional, and financial challenges for which many students and families are unprepared. School counselors will be able to better prepare students and their families for the college readiness process through understanding and implementing concepts from Family Systems Theory. This manuscript focuses on core tenets of Family Systems Theory that are directly applicable to the college readiness experience. The authors then propose a new framework to utilize these concepts and guide school counselor-student-family interactions. The manuscript proposes the READ-E framework to incorporate Family Systems Theory into college readiness counseling for K-12 students.

A Comparison Of Older Adult Suicide And Adolescent Suicide Through Film Representations, Catherine Longmore-Micham
Honors Projects
Approximately, 47,173 people in the United States died by suicide in 2017, making it the 10th leading cause of death. Although middle-aged adults have the highest rate of suicide, 20.2 per 100,000, older adults (i.e., individuals 60 years and older) closely follow with a rate of 20.1. Adolescent age groups have much lower rates for suicide: a rate of 14.46 per 100,100 in 2017 (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2017). The risk factors that affect adolescents and older adults are similar in some ways, but they differ in one major aspect: impulsivity. The issues that can be said to ‘cause’ …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Promotions Used By Bgsu Athletics, Christopher R. Novak
Exploring The Effectiveness Of Promotions Used By Bgsu Athletics, Christopher R. Novak
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Promotions are commonly used to bring people to athletic events from anywhere to youth levels all the way up to professional levels. Elements of the promotional mix include advertising, sales promotions, personal selling, and public relations. Understanding what elements of the promotional mix the greatest influence on increasing attendance at athletic events along with what motivates fans to attend is critical to developing a strong marketing plan. This is especially true for universities that have issues with attendance at athletic events. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate what forms of promotions BGSU Athletics currently execute and to …

Cognitive Strategies During Moderate-Intensity Running: Psychologicaland Performance Outcomes In Non-Elite Runners, Diana Curtis
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Cognitive strategies allow athletes and recreational exercisers to shift their focus of attention to achieve psychological benefits and performance enhancements. The types of cognitive strategy utilized, association and dissociation, can differentially affect individuals’ psychological and performance outcomes. The purpose of the current study was to examine the potential relationships between cognitive strategies and enjoyment, mood, time to completion, heart rate, perceived exertion, and self-efficacy by randomly assigning participants to two interventions: an Association intervention and a Dissociation intervention. Participants (N = 12) included male, college-age recreational exercisers who exercised for at least 120 minutes per week in the previous month. …
The Impact Of Hurricane Matthew On School Attendance: An Analysis From Rural Haiti, Amanda C. Cook, Donovan Beachy
The Impact Of Hurricane Matthew On School Attendance: An Analysis From Rural Haiti, Amanda C. Cook, Donovan Beachy
Economics Faculty Publications
This study identifies the impact of Hurricane Matthew on school attendance in an agricultural community in rural Haiti. We conducted a survey of parents whose children attended a rural school prior to Hurricane Matthew to determine the mechanism by which hurricanes impact school attendance. We determined the marginal effect of family size and school enrollment using a probit model. Parents identified two primary causes for their children leaving school: a loss of income—through crop damage and livestock deaths—and requiring the children’s labor on the family farm. In our sample 96 children, 46% of the children enrolled in school, stopped attending …
