Held in October 2018, The Big Data Meets Survey Science conference, also known as “Big- Surv18,” provided a first-of-its-kind opportunity for survey researchers, statisticians, computer scientists, and data scientists to convene under the same roof. At this conference, scientists from multiple disciplines were able to exchange ideas about their work might influence and enhance the work of others. This was a landmark event, especially for survey researchers and statisticians, whose industry has been buffeted of late by falling response rates and rising costs at the same time as a proliferation of new tools and techniques, coupled with increasing availability of …

People often assess the reasonableness of another person’s judgments. When doing so, the evaluator should set aside knowledge that would not have been available to the evaluatee to assess whether the evaluatee made a reasonable decision, given the available information. But under what circumstances does the evaluator set aside information? On the one hand, if the evaluator fails to set aside prior information, not available to the evaluatee, they exhibit belief bias. But on the other hand, when Bayesian inference is called for, the evaluator should generally incorporate prior knowledge about relevant probabilities in decision making. The present research integrated …

Communication Preferences Of Young Adults During “Do Not Drink” Water Emergencies, Philip J. Welch, Phil Zitko, Chelsea Raker, Rebecca Fallon
Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications
Background: Rapid, accurate communication between public health officials and the community members they serve is essential for public health protection and safety. “Do not drink” water advisories are public health emergencies that periodically occur in Northwest Ohio. The City of Toledo issued a “do not drink” advisory to approximately 400,000 residents in August 2014. Most families learned about the “do not drink” advisory from television news networks. However, communication preferences among young adults differ greatly from older generations. The purpose of this study was to identify young adult communication preferences during public health emergencies such as “do not drink” water …

Examining The Instructional Priorities Of A Secondary Education Teacher Preparation Program Utilizing An Integrated Approach To Assessment Education, Daniel M. Frederking
Examining The Instructional Priorities Of A Secondary Education Teacher Preparation Program Utilizing An Integrated Approach To Assessment Education, Daniel M. Frederking
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This study examined the instructional priorities of a four-year undergraduate secondary education program that does not offer an assessment-specific course, but instead integrates assessment instruction throughout the broader curriculum. An alignment method was utilized to better understand the program’s instructional priorities for teaching about assessment in comparison to the locally-used professional teaching standards and the locally-used teacher accreditation performance assessment. Areas of both alignment and misalignment were found in three dimensions: categorical concurrence (CC), depth of knowledge (DOK), and range of knowledge (ROK). Findings include course syllabi objectives that were written at a broader ROK level than the other two …

Race Is A Big Deal: The Childhood Experiences Of White, Female Teachers And The Development Of Critical Consciousness To "See, Judge And Act", Margaret Schauer
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This study explores the stories of White, female teachers to understand moments of critical consciousness around race during childhood experiences that may have supported strong relationships with students of color in their teaching careers. Qualitative methods were employed to collect and analyze the stories of five White, female teachers in an urban school district. Findings include colorblind and White privileged stances from childhood that became more critical as participants began teaching students of color and adopted culturally relevant pedagogies and practices to meet their students’ needs. A need for teacher education and school professional development to move educators even further …
