Dog Therapy Day At Nwccc, Jennifer Lang
Dog Therapy Day At Nwccc, Jennifer Lang
Honors Projects
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) provides great beneficial opportunities for individuals within the prison population. Many research studies display the effectiveness of AAT programs in prison settings through their results. The results showed improved moods, decreased stress levels, and increased sense of self-worth. I studied this topic for about a year, and in depth for a semester. This honors project was designed to implement what I had learned from previous research studies into a local correctional facility: Northwest Community Corrections Center. I designed an intervention where residents from the correctional facility spent quality time with the dogs of the Wood County Dog …

Age Differences In Stress And Coping: Problem-Focused Strategies Mediate The Relationship Between Age And Positive Affect, Yiwei Chen, Yisheng Peng, Huanzhen Xu, William H. O'Brien

The present study examined the different types of stressors experienced by adults of different ages, their coping strategies, and positive/negative affect. A mediation hypothesis of coping strategies was tested on the relationships between age and positive/negative affect. One-hundred and ninety-six community-dwelling adults (age range 18-89 years old) reported the most stressful situation they experienced in the past month and coping strategies. Levels of positive and negative affect in the past month were also measured. Content analysis revealed age differences in different types of stressors adults reported. Three types of coping strategies were found: problem-focused, positive emotion-focused, and negative emotion-focused coping. …

Environmental Factors: Honors Student’S Level Of Physical Activity And Exercise, Shelby Hyre
Environmental Factors: Honors Student’S Level Of Physical Activity And Exercise, Shelby Hyre
Honors Projects
Introduction: This study was undertaken to determine whether Bowling Green State University (BGSU) provided an environment that encouraged physical activity and exercise with Honors students (HS). The Trans-theoretical model was used to determine the intent/behavior related to participation in physical activity and exercise. Methods: A computer-based survey was distributed to all HS (N=909). The survey was derived from three previously published surveys. Results: Data were reduced and visually inspected for trends. The response rate was 29.2%. In general, HS were physical active (~70%) and/or exercised (~90%). Distance from the exercise facility did not seem to be important. The HS seemed …
Volunteer Resource Guide For Older Adults In The Bowling Green Area, Mallory Farabaugh
Volunteer Resource Guide For Older Adults In The Bowling Green Area, Mallory Farabaugh
Honors Projects
The purpose of this volunteer resource guide is to provide older adults a booklet with a variety of volunteer programs available in the Bowling Green/Wood County area. There are several benefits to volunteering including gaining an increased sense of purpose, giving back to the community, and fulfilling new roles in later life. It is made more convenient for the older adults in the community to access information about each program by listing it in one spot. Each program listed includes general information, how to sign up, any training that is involved, and how to contact the facility. The resource guide …

Reaction Time As A Measure Of Neuroplasticity After Aerobic Exercise, Ahmed Mostafa
Reaction Time As A Measure Of Neuroplasticity After Aerobic Exercise, Ahmed Mostafa
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Until the 1960s it was commonly-assumed in neuropsychology that the adult human nervous system was hard-wired and had extremely limited capacity to change. Recently research has demonstrated that this earlier assumption was not accurate and that the adult human nervous system indeed is quite plastic and in a state of continuous change. Further, physical exercise has been demonstrated to promote positive effects on the adult human nervous system as a result of increased blood flow and modified neurotransmitters and neutrophins. These effects are hypothesized to improve the synaptic connectivity and promote neurogenesis, both of which are believed to play an …

Twenty-six Japanese women (70.5 yr) self-selected water exercise (WEX) (n=13), or control (CON) (n=13) for 12 weeks. WEX was performed 60-minutes/day, 3 days/week with warm-up, cool-down stretch, ADL exercises, and cardiovascular/muscular endurance in 30°C water at a xiphoid level depth. CON continued their current activity/nutrition patterns. Compared to CON, WEX improved (p<.05) functional fitness and balance measures including arm curl (22%), chair stand (21%), 8-feet up & go (13%), chair sit/reach (50%), and 12-min walk (15%). No significant changes in sway velocity (SV) or limits of stability (LOS) were seen for either group. This shallow water exercise improved land-based ADL for older women but not balance. ADL tasks associated with balance did improve which may have indicated enhanced motor control.

Unmarried Midlife Adults And Economic Well-Being, Katie Finch
Unmarried Midlife Adults And Economic Well-Being, Katie Finch
Honors Projects
Much research has been conducted on how married older adults fare in comparison to unmarried older adults. Since the amount of unmarried older adults is increasing, I found it important to see how these unmarried groups (early divorcees, gray divorcees, never-marrieds, and widoweds) stacked up against each other in terms of economic well-being. Using the 2012 Health and Retirement Study, I looked at how demographic factors and economic well-being indicators were correlated to another. The demographic factors examined included gender, marital status, race, and educational attainment. Income, poverty level, and assets were used to assess economic well-being. Similar to previous …

Senior Women Golfers: A Pilot Study Of Their Fitness Characteristics And Mood Disturbance After Exercise, Matt Smith
Senior Women Golfers: A Pilot Study Of Their Fitness Characteristics And Mood Disturbance After Exercise, Matt Smith
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Senior golfers (>50 yrs of age) constitute more than 25% of the approximately 20 million Americans who are “committed” golfers (NGF, 2016). Golf is an excellent way to stay physically active and to participate in a “lifetime” sport. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate how senior golfers performed both functional and golf-specific fitness tests, and a 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) (aerobic fitness test). Possible changes in mood also were monitored before and after the 6-MWT to determine if walking influenced their total mood disturbance score (TMD). METHOD: Twelve female senior golfers (mean age of 62.9 …
Preserving Personhood In Individuals With Cognitive Impairment: A Caregiver's Role, Maren Legg
Preserving Personhood In Individuals With Cognitive Impairment: A Caregiver's Role, Maren Legg
Honors Projects
This project consists of an educational program for informal caregivers in the Bowling Green community on preserving personhood in individuals with cognitive impairments through caregiving experiences. The program was based on a copious amount of research regarding personhood, how personhood relates to individuals experiencing cognitive impairment, and how care provided by caregivers can be provided in a way that promotes and preserves an individual’s personality, personhood, and selfhood.
The program was developed over the span of four months and incorporates models of personhood, behaviors that threaten and preserve or promote personhood, as well as practical suggestions for strategies in how …
