“That They All May Be One”: A Virtuous Community, A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor Jr.
“That They All May Be One”: A Virtuous Community, A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor Jr.
Landas
The impact of human actions on the environment has created a myriad of problems. We need a moral paradigm that can facilitate an essential and substantial transformation to recover the bond between one another in the common home. Communal and environmental sustainability happens when human beings in the community live prudently, justly, steadfastly, and moderately with faith, hope, and charity. A virtuous community focused on the habitual practice of the virtues sustains the environment because when human beings treat each other prudently, justly, steadfastly, and moderately with faith, hope, and charity, they act in the same manner toward non-human species. …

A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life On Nuclear Energy: Exploring The Moral Implications Of The Revival Of The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, Archie R. Magarao
Landas
This paper critically examines the moral implications of reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) through the lens of the Reframed Consistent Ethic of Life (RCEL). While the Philippine government highlights its potential economic benefits, the study raises serious concerns about nuclear waste and its risks to human and nonhuman life. It evaluates both the advantages and dangers of nuclear energy, emphasizing threats to ecological integrity and long-term safety. The paper also questions the adequacy of existing plans for nuclear waste disposal, particularly in light of geopolitical and security challenges. In response, it proposes key moral perspectives: rethinking God’s presence …
Foundations And Principles Of A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta
Foundations And Principles Of A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta
Landas
Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’s Consistent Ethic of Life (CEL) is a moral vision that can be used to uphold the value and dignity of human life consistently in all its stages and circumstances. However, it must be reframed to acknowledge the new ways in which life is threatened today; these include the modern ecological crisis of our common home. This essay seeks to paint a more concrete picture of a reframed CEL. The first part rebuilds the original foundations of Bernardin’s moral vision in light of the crisis of our common home. The second part identifies and reframes principles from Catholic …
A Consistent Ethic Of Life For Philippine Church Leadership, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta
A Consistent Ethic Of Life For Philippine Church Leadership, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta
Theology Department Faculty Publications
This essay proposes Joseph Cardinal Bernardin''s consistent ethic of life (CEL) as a moral framework for Philippine Church leadership to consider and adapt as it engages with social issues. The paper begins by presenting the dual and inconsistent approaches of Philippine Church leadership to political engagement. This would be followed by a presentation of the key ideas of the CEL from which leaders of the Philippine Church can learn as well as how these can help renew the Philippine Church's vision of responding to the signs of the times; especially in terms of consistency. The paper concludes by proposing some …

Canon 915: The Spirit And Letter Of The Law, Kurt Zion V. Pala
Canon 915: The Spirit And Letter Of The Law, Kurt Zion V. Pala
Loyola Papers
This paper examines Canon 915 by analyzing its juridical meaning, theological foundations, and pastoral implications. It clarifies the canon’s application to those obstinately persisting in manifest grave sin, distinguishing between internal and external forum responsibilities. Drawing from canonical commentaries, Scripture, and magisterial teaching, the study highlights the conditions required for denying Holy Communion and the minister’s duty to avoid scandal while safeguarding the Eucharist’s dignity. At the same time, it underscores the need for pastoral prudence, mercy, and accompaniment, especially in complex situations such as irregular unions. The paper argues for a balanced approach that integrates fidelity to the law …

Creatio Continua In Missio Dei: Ecological Spirituality And Pedagogy In Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, David O. Reyes
Creatio Continua In Missio Dei: Ecological Spirituality And Pedagogy In Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, David O. Reyes
Loyola Papers
This paper examines an important aspect to which the Pope dedicates the entire Chapter 6 of this landmark document: the formation of an authentic ecological spirituality and pedagogy to address the current global crisis. Unfortunately, thischapter is frequently neglected in discussions, perhaps not only because of its placement towards the end of the encyclical, but also because spirituality and pedagogy are often viewed as the exclusive realm of a few experts, resulting in a certain reticence to tackle them. Hence, this paper develops the notion of creatio continua as a practical summons to participate in the missio Dei. It then …

Incarnating The Missionary-Pastoral Character Of The Churches In Asia, Peter Pojol Sj
Incarnating The Missionary-Pastoral Character Of The Churches In Asia, Peter Pojol Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The emergence and growth of pastoral institutes in Asia manifests the missionary-pastoral trajectories that were made the center of the focus of the Church by Vatican II, echoed by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), and reaffirmed and rejuvenated for our time by Pope Francis. The pastoral institutes of Network Pastoral Asia and Inter-Institutional Collaboration illustrate this impetus. They invite sustained reflection on and creative application of the Council's “principle of pastorality,” which carefully attends to context and faithfully expresses the “centrifugal missionary dimension” of evangelization.
Amoris Laetitia And Admission Of Divorced And Remarried Catholics To The Sacraments, Patrick D. Boyoc
Amoris Laetitia And Admission Of Divorced And Remarried Catholics To The Sacraments, Patrick D. Boyoc
Loyola Papers
The article looks into Pope Francis’ exhortation on the family and its stand on the admission to the sacraments of divorced and remarried Catholics. While demonstrating the controversial document’s fidelity to tradition, the author also highlights its unique contributions, especially in integrating other moral principles—also within the tradition—in the process of discernment of the situation of the persons involved.

Love Stronger Than Death: A Theological Response To Suicide In Depression, Maria Cecilia C. Tuble
Love Stronger Than Death: A Theological Response To Suicide In Depression, Maria Cecilia C. Tuble
Loyola Papers
The article offers a theological-anthropological response to suicide in the context of depression. It explores the psychopathology of suicide, drawing from research from neuroscience and psychology, and then considers three themes derived from the Imago Dei: Goodness, Communion, and Hope. It concludes that goodness, communion, and hope provide a healing path for those suffering suicidal depression.
Amoris Laetitia: Its Teachings And Magisterial Authority, Archie R. Magarao
Amoris Laetitia: Its Teachings And Magisterial Authority, Archie R. Magarao
Loyola Papers
The article argues that Amoris Laetitia is an example of the authentic magisterium of the Roman Pontiff befitting the response of a religious submission of the mind and will to the ordinary exercise of the Pope’s supreme teaching authority, even apart from a solemn ex cathedra judgment. Although it does not enjoy infallibility, it remains an authoritative teaching that the Pope offers as he exercises his office as Universal Pastor of the Church.
Pope Francis And The Culture Of Encounter, Angeli Francis S. Rivera
Pope Francis And The Culture Of Encounter, Angeli Francis S. Rivera
Loyola Papers
This paper investigates the development of Pope Francis’ “culture of encounter” as shaped by the people he has met throughout his life. These encounters form a “polyhedron” where diverse influences converge into a unified vision. The study explains that the culture of encounter responds to a weakening political and moral compass in contemporary society. It is concretized in four principles articulated in Evangelii Gaudium: time is greater than space, unity prevails over conflict, realities are more important than ideas, and the whole is greater than its parts. These principles provide a framework for dialogue, solidarity, and engagement. The paper highlights …

The Human Person, Subject Of Religious Freedom: Arguments In Christianity, Arguments In Islam, Felix Körner
The Human Person, Subject Of Religious Freedom: Arguments In Christianity, Arguments In Islam, Felix Körner
Landas
This article examines the theological foundations of religious freedom within Christianity and Islam, contextualized by the Bangsamoro Organic Law. Tracing Roman Catholicism's historical paradigm shift culminating in the Second Vatican Council's Dignitatis Humanae, the author analyzes how the concepts of "faith"—defined as a free, relational response of love—and the "human person"—characterized by dignity, relation, conscience, and history—theologically justify religious liberty. The study explores parallel justifications within Islam, examining Qur'anic perspectives on natural law, diversity, and human dignity. Finally, it addresses practical contemporary challenges in Christian-Muslim relations, emphasizing education and soft power over coercion.
Understanding The Church Position On Adoption By Same-Sex Couples, Ana Maria Q. Faustino
Understanding The Church Position On Adoption By Same-Sex Couples, Ana Maria Q. Faustino
Landas
This paper explains why the Church is not in favor of allowing same-sex partners to adopt a child. According to Church teaching, it is in the best interests of the child that she or he be born and raised within a natural family founded on the marriage of husband and wife. The lack of sexual complementarity in same-sex couples can undermine the development of an adopted child. Although there are studies claiming that children raised by same-sex couples fare just as well as those raised by a husband and wife, the findings are inconclusive and even disputed. Moreover, Faustino argues …

Should We Be Just, Loving Or Both? Understanding The Relationship Of Justice And Love, Edwin B. Odulio
Should We Be Just, Loving Or Both? Understanding The Relationship Of Justice And Love, Edwin B. Odulio
Theology Department Faculty Publications
In this article, I argue that the relationship of justice and love can be seen and understood through the prophets’ message in the Old Testament and in Jesus’ manifestation and proclamation of the Kingdom of God. This relationship is continuously affirmed by the Church, in particular, through its Catholic social teachings. The love for God and God’s people is the essence of the human beings’ commitment to work for justice while living out justice is the concrete manifestation of humanity’s response to their loving relationship with God and one another.
