Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan
Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan
Landas
This essay examines how language marginalizes animals by reducing them to “it,” obscuring their cognition, agency, communication, empathy, and giftedness. Such linguistic marginalization intersects with metaphors and colloquialisms that demean both women and animals and is reinforced by anthropocentric philosophical and theological traditions. While Thomistic thought has often emphasized human superiority, Thomas Aquinas also presents animals as participants in God’s community of creation who reveal divine goodness and glory. Drawing on animal reciprocity and feminist animal care, particularly entangled empathy, this essay proposes an ethic that recognizes animals in their wholeness and uniqueness. Naming becomes a countercultural practice that resists …
Tensions In Translating: The Case Of The Misa Ng Bayang Pilipino, Teofilo Giovan S. Pugeda Iii
Tensions In Translating: The Case Of The Misa Ng Bayang Pilipino, Teofilo Giovan S. Pugeda Iii
Landas
The Misa ng Bayang Pilipino (MBP) is an attempt at liturgical inculturation. Yet the inaction of the Roman Curia in the 1990s regarding the MBP is partly explainable by the MBP's use of the dynamic equivalence theory of translation and inculturated expression at a moment when norms on translation promoted by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments were shifting towards the formal equivalence theory. As a result, it appears that the MBP came into tension with the policy changes for liturgical translation at the time. In a certain way, the translational differences between the MBP …

The Mission And Ministry Of The East Asian Pastoral Institute For The Local Churches In Asia And Oceania, Paul B. Steffen, Svd
The Mission And Ministry Of The East Asian Pastoral Institute For The Local Churches In Asia And Oceania, Paul B. Steffen, Svd
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The EAPI is a typical international, interregional pastoral institute. It trains primarily multipliers in the ecclesial-pastoral ministry for the Asia-Pacific region. In 1986/87, 20 years after the first course, the institute had 14 resident members in the teaching staff. The novelty of the Pastoral Institute has been able to consolidate itself in this region and meet the existing needs. The EAPI is today a centre for the ecclesial-pastoral renewal of the Asian-Pacific local churches and it also contributes to the exchange of pastoral experiences with other local churches.

A Critical Analysis Of The Protestant Principle Of Sola Scriptura In Light Of Catholic Arguments On The Temporal Precedence Of Tradition And The Formal Insufficiency Of Scripture, Salvador G. Agualada Jr.
A Critical Analysis Of The Protestant Principle Of Sola Scriptura In Light Of Catholic Arguments On The Temporal Precedence Of Tradition And The Formal Insufficiency Of Scripture, Salvador G. Agualada Jr.
Loyola Papers
This paper critiques the Protestant doctrine of Sola Scriptura from a Catholic theological perspective. It argues that Christian Tradition historically precedes Scripture and that, while Scripture is materially sufficient for revelation, it is formally insufficient apart from the living Tradition of the Church. The study further develops the Catholic position through the thought of the French Dominican theologian Yves Congar, particularly his notion of “the whole genius of tradition.” Drawing on the teaching of Dei Verbum of the Second Vatican Council, the paper emphasizes the intrinsic and inseparable relationship among Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium.

Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille
Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille
Landas
Church organizations, like secular ones, face ageing, inertia, and the need for reform. Management scholars argue renewal is best pursued during an organization’s prime, when it is thriving. The Synod on Synodality offers such a pathway, continuing the vision of Vatican II. Renewal is urgent today, given shifting mission contexts and declining religious participation, with many Christians among the religiously disaffiliated. In the build-up to the FABC 50 assembly (November 2022), bishops’ conferences in Asia raised concerns about the Church’s internal life—its structures, ministries, relationships, and governance; and called for a review of the organizational framework of the FABC. For …
The Bombing Of Cities And Economic Sanctions: A Comparative Moral Analysis Using The Catholic Just War Tradition, Eric Marcelo O. Genilo
The Bombing Of Cities And Economic Sanctions: A Comparative Moral Analysis Using The Catholic Just War Tradition, Eric Marcelo O. Genilo
Landas
This essay analyzes two moral cases using the Church’s just war teaching: the Allied bombing of German cities during World War II and modern-day economic sanctions imposed by certain governments on other countries. The first part of this paper discusses the arguments used by moral theologian John C. Ford, S.J., in his article “The Morality of Obliteration Bombing,” to condemn the Allied forces’ policy of bombing civilian areas in Germany during World War II.1 The second part of this article discusses how economic sanctions are used in international relations as a non-violent means to punish or correct the behavior or …

The Mandate For Accountability And The Rule Of Law: A Theological-Ethical Analysis Of The House Of Representatives’ Role After Duterte V. House Of Representatives, Kerr Nell S. Deliva
Loyola Papers
This article offers a theological-ethical analysis of Duterte v. House of Representatives, interpreting the tension between the House of Representatives of the Philippines and the Supreme Court of the Philippines as a kairos that clarifies their institutional vocations. It examines impeachment as a moral duty rooted in popular sovereignty and public accountability, while highlighting challenges to fides publica arising from judicial intervention. Drawing on moral theology, the article underscores the need to balance justice and legal order, proposing pathways for responsible governance and deeper civic engagement.

Negotiating Theological Meaning In Contemporary Film, Shimbo Pastory William
Negotiating Theological Meaning In Contemporary Film, Shimbo Pastory William
Loyola Papers
This paper examines how contemporary films function as social constructs that shape identity and influence the negotiation of theological meaning among young viewers. Drawing on insights from John Pungente and Monty Williams, it explores how Ignatian spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises can guide theological engagement with film. Using theological hermeneutics and qualitative film analysis, the study investigates how young Christians, particularly Gen Z viewers, interpret cinematic narratives through a Christian lens. It argues that even non-religious films can mediate theological insights and become meaningful spaces for discovering God’s saving presence in contemporary culture.

Pope Francis’ Theology Of Hospitality As An Advocacy Model For Refugee Management In The Indonesian Context, Ishak Jacues Cavin
Pope Francis’ Theology Of Hospitality As An Advocacy Model For Refugee Management In The Indonesian Context, Ishak Jacues Cavin
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This article examines the shortcomings of current refugee management practice and makes the case for a shift towards a rights-based approach. It contends against prevailing charitable and needs-based reactions by asserting that these sorts of frameworks have a tendency to overlook refugees as entire human beings possessing inherent dignity and rights. Such models tend to depict refugees as recipients of aid passively without their potential for empowerment and social engagement. As a response, the study introduces Pope Francis' theology of hospitality as a comprehensive advocacy model. The model is established on four important stages: welcoming, protecting, supporting, and, notably, integrating. …
The State Of Global And African Ecology, Peter Knox
The State Of Global And African Ecology, Peter Knox
Landas
This article recounts the growth of concern for the environment in the latter half of the 20th Century, and its entry into Catholic magisterial theology. It expands on the ecological theory of planetary boundaries, and identifies how the theory surfaces in Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. Based upon solid contemporary science, the encyclical is well founded to outline an appropriate and compassionate moral theology of care for creation. The article cites multiple instances where African people are at the nexus of environmental and social crises, focusing on how contemporary ecological factors affect women in particular. Environmental crises should not …

Global Exchange: Glimpses Of An 18th Century Colonial Kitchen In Manila, Rene B. Javellana Sj
Kritika Kultura
It seems self-evident that Spanish cuisine influenced Philippine cuisine. The similarity in nomenclature, some with toponyms, suggests such connection. To imagine that Spanish- influenced dishes that Filipinos consume in today were exactly the same in the 18th century is to be oblivious of the complex evolution of Hispanic dishes, the result of colonial exchange and negotiation. The 1768 inventory of the Colegio de San José’s kitchen, an otherwise laconic list, is interpreted and brought to life with help of other studies, like that on food migrants by scholars, the late Doreen G. Fernandez, Dr. Isagani Medina and Corazon Alvina, which …
Communication As A Mobile Field: The Critical Dialogue And Exchange Between The Vatican Doctrine On Social Communication And Secular Communication Sciences, Joyce Arriola
Kritika Kultura
The Decree on Social Communication called Inter Mirifica was one of the 16 documents that were produced by the Catholic Church at the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). It guided the Church in engaging the modern world, particularly through the means of communication. This came at the height of the positivist inflection of communication studies, which began as an academic discipline when the first doctoral program was established in the United States in 1943. While the communication discipline grew steadily as a science, producing its own theories and adopting its specific research methodologies and protocols, it also developed along humanistic lines, …

Safeguarding And Homosexuality, James Mctavish,
Safeguarding And Homosexuality, James Mctavish,
Landas
The Church is actively working to promote and build up a culture of safeguarding. Those most vulnerable to abuse need care and protection. Sexual orientation is an important element to consider in safeguarding, as there are specific risks for homosexual persons, and persons with same-sex attraction (SSA) frequently experience abuse. In a sensitive and respectful way, this article examines the background elements regarding homosexuality and abuse and gives specific details that can help in formulating a vision of safeguarding that takes into account the specific reality of persons with SSA.

A Framework For Christian Social Involvement From The Writings Of Dean Brackley Sj: Scriptural And Theological Foundations, Edryan Paul J. Colmenares
Loyola Papers
This article examines the writings of Jesuit liberation theologian Dean Brackley and their scriptural and theological foundations for Christian social engagement. Beginning with an exposition of the theology of the Reign of God, it situates Brackley’s thought in dialogue with the perspectives of Karl Rahner and Gustavo Gutiérrez. The study develops a framework for Christian social involvement that complements the pastoral cycle and compares it with models proposed by Jacques Maritain and Juan Luis Segundo. The resulting framework aims to promote a balanced, contextually grounded, interdisciplinary, and spiritually rooted approach to Christian social action.
