The Mission And Ministry Of The East Asian Pastoral Institute For The Local Churches In Asia And Oceania, Paul B. Steffen, Svd
The Mission And Ministry Of The East Asian Pastoral Institute For The Local Churches In Asia And Oceania, Paul B. Steffen, Svd
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The EAPI is a typical international, interregional pastoral institute. It trains primarily multipliers in the ecclesial-pastoral ministry for the Asia-Pacific region. In 1986/87, 20 years after the first course, the institute had 14 resident members in the teaching staff. The novelty of the Pastoral Institute has been able to consolidate itself in this region and meet the existing needs. The EAPI is today a centre for the ecclesial-pastoral renewal of the Asian-Pacific local churches and it also contributes to the exchange of pastoral experiences with other local churches.

Pastoral Ministry At The Intersections Of Life For A Synodal Church In Asia, Charles Bertille
Pastoral Ministry At The Intersections Of Life For A Synodal Church In Asia, Charles Bertille
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This paper is condensed from the Keynote Address presented by the author at EAPI's 60th Anniversary. Pastoral ministry in Asia unfolds amid pluralism, migration, inequality, and shifting identities, requiring a vision beyond sacramental maintenance toward lived experience and communal struggle. Rooted in Vatican II, Asian theology, and the Synod on Synodality, ministry is participatory, dialogical, and mission-oriented. Synodality calls for conversion of spirit and structure: humility, discernment, and trust. Leadership must be missionary, interculturally competent, and committed to the poor and creation. Formation institutes such as EAPI and NIFSA serve as laboratories for synodal practice, fostering prophetic leadership. Ultimately, synodality …

Buddha’S Dhammapada And Jesus Christ’S Parable Of The Rich Man And Lazarus: Evil, Freedom, And Divine Justice, Kevin Stephon R. Centeno
Buddha’S Dhammapada And Jesus Christ’S Parable Of The Rich Man And Lazarus: Evil, Freedom, And Divine Justice, Kevin Stephon R. Centeno
Loyola Papers
This article presents a comparative study of moral evil, human freedom, and justice in the Dhammapada and the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Engaging insights from Paul Ricoeur and John Hick, the study examines how Buddhism and Christianity interpret the moral consequences of human actions. While differing in theological foundations—karmic law and divine justice—the traditions converge in affirming moral responsibility and the inevitability of ethical consequences, offering valuable insights for interreligious dialogue and contemporary ethical reflection.
Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille
Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille
Landas
Church organizations, like secular ones, face ageing, inertia, and the need for reform. Management scholars argue renewal is best pursued during an organization’s prime, when it is thriving. The Synod on Synodality offers such a pathway, continuing the vision of Vatican II. Renewal is urgent today, given shifting mission contexts and declining religious participation, with many Christians among the religiously disaffiliated. In the build-up to the FABC 50 assembly (November 2022), bishops’ conferences in Asia raised concerns about the Church’s internal life—its structures, ministries, relationships, and governance; and called for a review of the organizational framework of the FABC. For …

This article presents the 37 Japanese Martyrs of Japan proposed for beatification who died in the 1868–71 period. They represent a little-known part of the so called “Last Persecution” of Japan. They are proposed as an example of exiled people who accepted the trials they suffered because of their Faith. First, a brief background of their situation is given, who they were, and the influence they had in Japanese society, which was mainly the introduction of religious freedom in Japan by the Meiji Government that opened a cultural and religious exchange with the West. Some examples are given of their …

Pope Francis On Forced Migration: A Pastoral Of Mercy And Its Relevance In The Indonesian Context, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara, Martinus Dam Febrianto
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Dealing with refugees, was the late Pope Francis’ legacy, during his pontificate, both as the leader of the Catholic Church and a global figure. This article reviews Francis’ pastoral approach of mercy, especially in his concern and advocacy for migrants and refugees, as expressed through his gestures, statements, thoughts, proposals, and policies. Along with issues of global inequality and ecological damage, Francis believed that forced migration can only be addressed through joint efforts based on recognizing human dignity, solidarity, the need for participation, as well as connectivity and inclusivity that encompasses the entire human family. This article then highlights the …
Pope Francis’ Theology Of Hospitality As An Advocacy Model For Refugee Management In The Indonesian Context, Ishak Jacues Cavin
Pope Francis’ Theology Of Hospitality As An Advocacy Model For Refugee Management In The Indonesian Context, Ishak Jacues Cavin
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This article examines the shortcomings of current refugee management practice and makes the case for a shift towards a rights-based approach. It contends against prevailing charitable and needs-based reactions by asserting that these sorts of frameworks have a tendency to overlook refugees as entire human beings possessing inherent dignity and rights. Such models tend to depict refugees as recipients of aid passively without their potential for empowerment and social engagement. As a response, the study introduces Pope Francis' theology of hospitality as a comprehensive advocacy model. The model is established on four important stages: welcoming, protecting, supporting, and, notably, integrating. …
Toward A Christology (Masīḥiology) With Islam, Renato T. طيب Oliveros
Toward A Christology (Masīḥiology) With Islam, Renato T. طيب Oliveros

The divinity of Jesus (Eisa) is the Christological stumbling block in the Muslim-Catholic Dialogue of Theological Exchange. It is noteworthy to note that outside the New Testament, the Qur’ān is the only sacred scripture that mentions Jesus the-Christ (Eisa al-Masīḥ) by name. This shared Christological revelation is not accidental but divinely intended, serving as a challenge to both Muslims and Christians, for it is through Jesus that they are bound in a unique relationship of nearest affection (Q5:82). In the Qur’ān there are two identical Christological ayat (or verses تايآ ): Surah 3 (Al-Imran) 3:45a and Surah 4 (An-Nisa) 4:171a …

Christianity As A Culture Of Mobility: A Case Study Of Asian Transient Migrants In Singapore, Catherine Gomes, Jonathan Y. Tan

More than ever before, the global and transnational movements of young people for work and study have become part of everyday life. Yet there is very little research on this phenomenon in relation to how actors in transience create strategies to cope with being away from home nation (place of birth and/or citizenship) and from family. As part of the findings of a larger international study on the identities, social networks and media/ communication use of transient migrants, researchers found that Christianity featured prominently during life in transience for Asian respondents. This paper thus puts forward the notion that Christianity …

The Great Spirit In Indigenous Peoples' Lives And The Future Of Pneumatology, Jojo M. Fung Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
With the unsustainability of the current global economic and financial systems that have exacerbated the ecological crises, it is timely to turn our attention to the shamanic religiosity of the indigenous peoples. The wisdomteachings of shamanic pneumatology are invaluable in helping the earth community to negotiate this critical ecological era. The first part of this paper explains the indigenous understanding and experience of the Great Spirit. The second part will delve into the future of pneumatology in terms of the three major paths: live-in dialogue, plunging into the depth of religious mystical traditions, and dialogue with modern science and cosmology.
Shaping A Culture Of Encounter In A Fragmented World: Culture, Politics, And The Promise Of Interreligious Dialogue, Leo D. Lefebure
Shaping A Culture Of Encounter In A Fragmented World: Culture, Politics, And The Promise Of Interreligious Dialogue, Leo D. Lefebure
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
We are constantly reminded on many different fronts that our global community is facing crises of major proportions. Of these, ethno-religious nationalism emerging in many different countries of the world, and the rapidly increasing destruction of our Earth's ecosystem manifested in the phenomenon termed “climate change,” stand out as key challenges facing all of us. Pope Francis has called on all people of good will to work together in stemming the tide of destruction, and highlights the importance of interreligious dialogue in his regard. This essay names five areas wherein interreligious dialogue and cooperation may be applied to usher in …

Towards A Mosim Christology: A Korean Response, Hwang Kyung-Hoon
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This article will reflect on Jesus' understanding of God, and will then move on to discuss the Korean people's cultural understanding of Jesus. It will offer Mosim Christology (mosim means reverencing or serving humans and God in one's heart sincerely) as a meaningful Christology for Korean people. It will show the relationship between Jesus' experience of God as Abba and mosim, our main theme.
God And Creation In The Writings Of Pseudo-Dionysius And Brahmabandhab Upadhyay, Simplicio D'Souza
God And Creation In The Writings Of Pseudo-Dionysius And Brahmabandhab Upadhyay, Simplicio D'Souza
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Christian theology over the centuries has established itself in Western categories of thought. The official Church magisterium at times is at pains to acknowledge, nay condone, expressions of theological thought in categories other than the established ones. In our paper, we explore the theological consonances between a classical Western theologian and an Eastern (rather Asian) theologian. If Pseudo-Dionysius attempted to interpret Christianity through Neoplatonism, Brahmabandhab Upadhyay explores Christianity through the Indian Advaita Vedānta. We place them into dialogue in their theological explorations regarding God and creation, only to realize that expressing the inexpressible can happen in different cultures, yet be …
