Lifestyle, Values, And The Meaning Of Life, Ashok Vohra Nov 2024

Lifestyle, Values, And The Meaning Of Life, Ashok Vohra

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

There are alternative lifestyles. We choose the one which in our opinion will help us to fulfill our voluntarily chosen purpose or meaning of our life. The paper explores the meaning of “meaning of life.” To understand the notion of meaning of life, I have made an exhaustive and critical survey of the philosophical literature of both Eastern and Western philosophy. I have argued that one finds the meaning of one’s life and fulfills it, if and only if one follows one’s true nature and does not blindly follow what others are doing.

Japanese Philosophy Of Moral Education: From Watsuji Tetsurô To Mori Akira, Anton Sevilla-Liu Nov 2024

Japanese Philosophy Of Moral Education: From Watsuji Tetsurô To Mori Akira, Anton Sevilla-Liu

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This article builds on the ethics of Watsuji Tetsurô (1889 1960) through a comparison with Mori Akira’s (1915–1976) the philosophy of education to show how Watsuji’s “ethics of emptiness” can be concretely manifested in human formation. While keeping Watsuji’s ethics in view, this article examines Mori Akira’s early philosophy of moral education in the 1950s, which can be found in his philosophy book, his teacher’s manual, and his moral education student textbooks. This article begins with Watsuji’s idea of “human existence” and its similarities with Mori Akira’s idea of “human becoming,” which adds a developmental angle to Watsuji’s tensional view …

Bukusu And Amazonian Perspectives On Harmonious Relations With The Other, Gail M. Presbey

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The article follows the theme of dealing with adversaries and conflict resolution. As an exercise in intercultural philosophy, the paper explores the philosophies of two different regions, the Amazon of South America (Jivaro and Yanesha/Amuesha people of Peru) and Western Province of Kenya, East Africa (with a focus on the Bukusu people). Exploring the insights of other researchers as well as drawing upon interviews by the author, the article explains each group’s philosophy of conflict resolution referencing myths, folktales, proverbs, and interviews with sages. In the case of both communities, practitioners of peace must engage in bravery to reach out …

Indigenous Liberation Theology And Spirituality: Looking To The Past For Answers In The Present, Kathleen Nadeau, Jojo M. Fung Nov 2024

Indigenous Liberation Theology And Spirituality: Looking To The Past For Answers In The Present, Kathleen Nadeau, Jojo M. Fung

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Pope Francis’s Laudato si’: On the Care of Our Common Home offers a framework for dealing with poverty, ecological degradation, and climate change in the Philippines. His interconnected and holistic ecological spirituality shares some commonalities with indigenous spirituality where the earth is a gift from God to be taken care of—not taken advantage of or taken for granted. In this paper, we explore how this integrated approach of indigenous spirituality and liberation theology offers some long-term solutions to the problems of poverty and climate-change. Taking the position of being politically engaged in the world accords well with indigenous spirituality, this …

Discontinuity And Continuity Of Devotion The Virgin Of Guadalupe From Mexico To Makati, Jovino De Guzman Miroy Nov 2024

Discontinuity And Continuity Of Devotion The Virgin Of Guadalupe From Mexico To Makati, Jovino De Guzman Miroy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper echoes the question of Horacio de la Costa in the talk that he gave in 1968: “What is the meaning of Makati?” The talk intended to guide the development of the Business District by the principles of Catholic social teaching. This paper tries to provide a path to ascertain the meaning of Makati by contextualizing it within two barangays: Guadalupe Viejo and Guadalupe Nuevo. The paper performs a philosophical understanding of a city by situating it within the history of religions and the philosophy of religion. In the first part, it rehearses the history of devotion to the …

The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy Nov 2024

The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The economic and social prosperity of nations are usually attributed to functional requirements—such as honest government, effective transport and communication networks, health care and education—and development strategies such as investment in infrastructure. However, beyond a certain point peak economic and social success relies as much on human ingenuity as on capital investment. The article proposes that the world’s most prosperous societies have three recurring characteristics that foster such ingenuity: (1) they are all closely connected to trading portals, (2) they nourish paradoxical belief systems that underscore a proclivity for intellectual abstraction and pattern-based interaction, and (3) they are stranger societies …

The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra Nov 2024

The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In his first Manifesto for Philosophy, Alain Badiou alludes to the idea of sutures occurring between philosophy and the more dominant disciplines like science, politics, art, and psychoanalysis after Hegel. This phenomenon is inextricably linked to discourses about the end of philosophy and the linguistic turn in hermeneutic, analytic, and postmodern philosophies. In Badiou’s analysis one finds that in so far as these traditions are concerned, systematic philosophy is henceforth impossible. In this work, I take Badiou’s said allusion seriously and argue that after totalitarianism and the two world wars, an antipathy towards systematic philosophy has led to what I …

Deconstructing And Expanding Gender Roles: Theological Reflections On Women And Local Disaster Response, Rachel Joyce Marie O. Sanchez, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen Nov 2024

Deconstructing And Expanding Gender Roles: Theological Reflections On Women And Local Disaster Response, Rachel Joyce Marie O. Sanchez, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The situation of women during and after local disasters may, at first, seem unrelated to feminist theology, but this article argues that a critical reflection on the matter helps the Church further understand the relationship between men, women, and the rest of creation. In the context of two Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) documents entitled “What is Happening to Our Beautiful Land?” (1988) and “Upholding the Sanctity of Life” (2008), this article will analyze and articulate the gender ideologies that seem to underpin how women and nature are understood, using the reflections on the situation of women in …

Negotiating Tolerance: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing And Researching Religion In China, Naomi Thurston Nov 2024

Negotiating Tolerance: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing And Researching Religion In China, Naomi Thurston

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Just as G. E. Lessing criticized what he saw as the narrow mindedness of his contemporaries by creating characters that exemplified a morally enlightened rationalism, religious studies scholars in contemporary China have helped instruct and reshape uninformed or generalizing attitudes towards religion in Chinese society. Reflecting on Lessing’s literary case for religious tolerance, the present article discusses different understandings of the nature and significance of religion in the field of so-called “Sino-Christian studies” (汉语基督教研究 Hanyu Jidujiao yanjiu). It demonstrates how religious and “theological tolerance” are variously understood depending on the stances, approaches, and constructions of meaning of individual scholars, influenced, …

Emancipatory Faith: Reflection On Alain Badiou And The Christians For National Liberation, Regletto Aldrich D. Imbong, Jerry D. Imbong Nov 2024

Emancipatory Faith: Reflection On Alain Badiou And The Christians For National Liberation, Regletto Aldrich D. Imbong, Jerry D. Imbong

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Although Badiouian political thought maintains an obvious distance from theology, theisms, and all forms of transcendental conceptualizations of human liberation, it does allow the most universal form of democratic mass participation, including by Christian believers. This crossover, far from being a domination of either politics or religion, is possible because of their common affirmation of and fidelity to an Event. This paper aims to show the crossover between the radical politics of Alain Badiou and the revolutionary potential of the Christian religion proposed by a revolutionary organization. It further clarifies that radical politics, which seemingly veers towards atheism, and religion …

Why Should Universities Contribute To New Utopias?, Geert Bouckaert Nov 2024

Why Should Universities Contribute To New Utopias?, Geert Bouckaert

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

What would the ideal society look like, and its university? In 1516 the English humanist Thomas More tried his hand at imagining a perfect society on a distant island. His Utopia was first published in the Flemish town of Leuven, home of a university that was established almost a century earlier in 1425. Five hundred years later, university scholars revisit More’s exercise in an interdisciplinary range of science-based utopias.1 Like More’s Utopia, later and new utopias have to be read in the light of their own times. Utopias are connected to and embedded in their social realities. They belong to …

Are Secular Politics Possible?, Gregory C. Melleuish, Susanna G. Rizzo Nov 2024

Are Secular Politics Possible?, Gregory C. Melleuish, Susanna G. Rizzo

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Contemporary political analysis makes a distinction between politics that are secular in nature and politics that are religiously based. This article questions whether there is such a thing as secular politics. Firstly, it examines the roots of the secular/religious dichotomy in Western thought and concludes that it is the creation of particular intellectual developments in the West. And then it argues that modern politics is best viewed in terms of a number of “sacred projects” that are generated out of the supposedly secular nature of the modern West. There can be no real politics without such projects, only administration. Even …

Christianity's Paradox: Chesterton After Kierkegaard, Peter Murphy Nov 2024

Christianity's Paradox: Chesterton After Kierkegaard, Peter Murphy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

A convert to Catholicism, G.K. Chesterton was a leading intellectual of the British Edwardian age and one of the important social and religious thinkers of the twentieth century. His trademark was paradox. He wrote in defense of the imagination and the corralling of opposites, oppositions, contradictions, and bountiful inconsistencies. The article explores Chesterton’s views on faith, religion, God, Christianity, Islam, modernity, change, and progress. It locates him in a philosophical stream that sees laughter and comedy as a religious disguise, paradox as a creative force, and the imagination as a necessary complement of reason. This is framed by a discussion …

Paul Ricoeur's Anthropology Of Forgiveness, Guillermo R. Dionisio Nov 2024

Paul Ricoeur's Anthropology Of Forgiveness, Guillermo R. Dionisio

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In his philosophical anthropology Paul Ricoeur sees man’s innate goodness, despite his propensity for evil, ramifying into many capacities, among them, forgiveness. The capacity to forgive, for Ricoeur, lies between the paralysis of the power to act due to human fault, and the possible lifting of this incapacity through the separation of the offending agent from his or her evil deeds. But if forgiveness obtains in isolating offenders from their evil deeds, their self-understanding, sense of responsibility, and identity might become distorted and inaccurate, and would make us question whether forgiveness should be horizontal, that is, conditional; or vertical, that …

The Practice Of Hermeneutics: The Legal Text And Beyond, George H. Taylor Nov 2024

The Practice Of Hermeneutics: The Legal Text And Beyond, George H. Taylor

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This article attempts to show the continuing practical relevance of hermeneutics through the example of legal interpretation. The article begins with the very concrete nature of legal hermeneutics that forms everyday legal practice—the interrelation of meaning and application— and expands at a more theoretical to show how legal hermeneutics, and hermeneutics more generally, offers what Ricoeur calls an interpretive “choice in favor of meaning.” The choice in favor of meaning underscores the restorative character of hermeneutics that legal hermeneutics can epitomize. The article concludes with some of the challenges facing contemporary legal hermeneutics.

Between Struggle And Peaceful Dialogue: An Overture To Honneth And Ricoeur On Recognition, Paolo A. BolañOs Nov 2024

Between Struggle And Peaceful Dialogue: An Overture To Honneth And Ricoeur On Recognition, Paolo A. BolañOs

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In this article I offer an overture to further discussions about the relationship between the German critical theorist, Axel Honneth, and the French philosopher of dialogue, Paul Ricoeur, specifically on their insights on the ethics of recognition. First, I define critical theory through the three normative resources suggested by Max Horkheimer in order to contextualize my reading of Honneth and Ricoeur, both of whom adhere to the politico-practical content of critical theory. Second, I briefly outline the Honneth–Ricoeur debate/dialogue in order to show the philosophical link between them. Third, in separate sections, I schematically discuss the basic features of their …

An Epic Vision Of Christianity, Olivier Abel Nov 2024

An Epic Vision Of Christianity, Olivier Abel

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In the late 1950s Paul Ricoeur wrote a programmatic essay on his vision of Christianity. Out of this essay could be gleaned an epic tone that has seemed to turn inaudible. This article seeks to make such epic tone audible. First, it situates the context out of which the epic strand in Ricoeur’s “theology” has emerged and asks why he would even dare to speak of theology as epic. Second, the article dwells on the kind of reader, author, and character the epic genre generates and asks who is capable, not only of reading and heeding the epic, but also …
