Interdisciplinarity From Below, Michael D. Pante
Interdisciplinarity From Below, Michael D. Pante
Kritika Kultura
Interdisciplinarity is one of the key catchphrases that define the ongoing educational reform in the Philippines. Through the K-12 basic education curriculum and the revamped tertiary-level general education curriculum, bureaucrats and their partners in the academe seek to equip students with knowledge and skills that will allow them to think and act beyond their chosen field. Such an edge supposedly affords graduates a competitive advantage in a highly globalized labor market. Nonetheless, one must not be carried away by the hype; interdisciplinarity, especially this version imposed from above, still has to be interrogated. For one, lost in the state-directed discourse …

From Stage To Screen: Early Filmmaking Of Indigenous Performers In Highland Central Java, Tito Imanda
From Stage To Screen: Early Filmmaking Of Indigenous Performers In Highland Central Java, Tito Imanda
Kritika Kultura
This paper is based on an empirical study that explores issues around the process of a traditional performance art group in a village in highland Central Java adapting to film production. Wayang orang—or loosely translated human puppet—is a traditional opera-like performance rooted in Central and East Java, Indonesia. As part of a traditional society living in a rural area, members of the group discuss their productions mostly without written documents. Storylines were experienced through performing and watching different shows. Technical skills were built through lifelong intimate practices. The project explores a general explorative question: how does a traditional oral and …
Unreading The Novel, Or Experiencing Ninotchka Rosca’S State Of War As Mythopoeia, Katherine D. Ojano
Unreading The Novel, Or Experiencing Ninotchka Rosca’S State Of War As Mythopoeia, Katherine D. Ojano
Kritika Kultura
The Filipino novel which arose in the 19th century is understood to have consolidated the nationalistic spirit that fueled the anti-colonial revolution against Spain. Contemporary writing drew from the radical lessons of the past as a tradition of resistance writing intensified and grew. Yet as Ninotchka Rosca’s State of War (1988) shows, the novel, despite or alongside its politics, also brings to the fore formal and substantial problems of excess and incoherence. This paper explores the instances of the mythical that bring about these points of incomprehensibility, even scattered, perhaps, absolute subversions of the genre and the nationalist cause in …
Republishing Folktales: Their Audiences, Readers, And Influences In Modern Indonesian Literature, Sudarmoko Sudarmoko
Republishing Folktales: Their Audiences, Readers, And Influences In Modern Indonesian Literature, Sudarmoko Sudarmoko
Kritika Kultura
This paper presents an exploration of the republishing of traditional stories or folktales, most of which are traditionally oral, into printed form. This republishing activity has resulted in some changes in the stories, including the narrative’s structure as well as writers’ interpretation of the stories. As such, this paper also explains other domains that are also potentially affected by this activity. The narrative of the stories, the profile of the audience and reader, and the use of different media, particularly in the area of contemporary publishing and writing, development in Indonesia, comprise these domains. Furthermore, this paper investigates the republication …
Postcolonial Studies And Pantayong Pananaw In Philippine Historiography, Rommel A. Curaming
Postcolonial Studies And Pantayong Pananaw In Philippine Historiography, Rommel A. Curaming
Kritika Kultura
This paper offers a platform for a mutually critical imaginary dialogue between two different anti-Eurocentric analytic approaches, Postcolonialism (PC) and Pantayong Pananaw (From-Us, For-Us Perspective, PP). The dialogue foregrounds key areas of engagement between these approaches and allows in the process to revisit a number of vexing issues that interrogate them as well as the nature of an engaged, pro-marginalized scholarship. It suggests that while each approach can profitability learn from the other, it seems that a truly progressive aspiration may be better served by going beyond the current orientations or foci of the two approaches.
Jandayan Island: Symphony Of Dry Winds In A Time Without Rain, Eulalio R. Guieb Iii
Jandayan Island: Symphony Of Dry Winds In A Time Without Rain, Eulalio R. Guieb Iii
Kritika Kultura
This essay examines the narratives of residents of Jandayan Island in the province of Bohol in central Philippines. I highlight the social relations of actors and groups as they negotiate and broker the representation and control of the meanings of their place. The essay sifts through the individual and collective lives of islanders as they reflect and constitute the manifold interests that shape the biographies of their island. In this essay, the island is a work in progress in which shifts and transitions represent the tenuous processes of community formation in a milieu of varying interests and alliances.
From “Game-Like Realism” To The “Imagination-Oriented Aesthetic”: Reconsidering Bourdieu’S Contribution To Fan Studies In The Light Of Japanese Manga And Otaku Theory, Zoltan Kacsuk
Kritika Kultura
Following Casey Brienza’s call for drawing on Japanese “otaku theory” in order to further comics studies, the present article demonstrates how the wider interrelated discourse around anime, manga, and otaku can be productively related to fields such as Western fan studies. Focusing on Azuma Hiroki’s book The Birth of Game-like Realism this paper both highlights the theoretical richness of works which have yet to be translated into English, and emphasizes the importance of manga research – in this case Itō Gō’s book Tezuka is Dead – beyond the confines of manga/comics studies. Building on a novel reading of Azuma’s framework …

From Healing To Hope: The Continuing Influence Of The Chilean Arpilleras, T. Randahl Morris Ph.D., Apr
Kritika Kultura
Since the 1970s, instances of widespread societal terror and extermination have proliferated. The source of such conflicts may involve entities outside of a country but, often, the parties involved in the conflict are states and their citizens. These types of social injustices and human rights atrocities tear apart the very fabric of a society, often resulting from internal wars which pit people who previously lived side-by-side against one another. A constant in these conflicts is the silencing of communication on many levels which creates an opening for multiple forms of art to function as communicative media, visual testimony, and human …
The Fandom Of Hallyu, A Tribe In The Digital Network Era: The Case Of Army Of Bts, Woongjo Chang, Shin-Eui Park
The Fandom Of Hallyu, A Tribe In The Digital Network Era: The Case Of Army Of Bts, Woongjo Chang, Shin-Eui Park
Kritika Kultura
Hallyu, the Korean Wave, has entered another stage with the emergence and dramatic success of BTS, a seven-member South Korean boy band, and its uniquely engaged fandom. The band’s fan club, ARMY of BTS, through their social media presence and other internet activities, is a significant factor in the band’s success. Unlike traditional fandom, ARMY has built a huge base of support by championing the message that everyone must find their own personal taste and voice, demonstrating in the process the tribal power of global fandom as a far-reaching cultural phenomenon that exceeds the scope of traditional fan clubs. Adopting …
Accumulated And Accumulable Cultures: The Case Of Public And Private Initiatives Toward K-Pop, Jimmyn Parc, Hwy-Chang Moon
Accumulated And Accumulable Cultures: The Case Of Public And Private Initiatives Toward K-Pop, Jimmyn Parc, Hwy-Chang Moon
Kritika Kultura
When it comes to the promotion of culture, many tend to highlight the vital role of public initiatives. This idea is based on the common perception that culture is part of the nation- state. This belief also stems from the confusion between two types of culture. To address such misperceptions, this paper emphasizes a distinction between accumulated and accumulable cultures: The former is associated with the nation-state and local conditions. Given that it has formed over a long period of time with the accumulation of related cultural practices, the need to protect it is strong. On the other hand, accumulable …

The Female Monster: The Pre-Catholic Manifestation As A Response To Modern Anxiety In Selected Stories By Nick Joaquin, Tyra Delos Reyes, Xavier Selman
Kritika Kultura
Scholarship on the writings of Nick Joaquin have mostly concerned themselves with either their postcolonial resonances or the gender politics abound in the text. Tropical Gothic (1972) is widely read as an ambiguous approach toward feminism because of the depiction of the female as monstrous which has been argued to problematize its feminist possibilities, whether this depiction empowers or suppresses women in the texts. Examining the criticism of Marie Arong, Philip Holden, and Epifanio San Juan Jr., this paper asserts how existing notions of gender are able to produce a more nuanced reading of Nick Joaquin’s selected stories, specifically “Summer …
Temporality In Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Marie Rose Arong
Temporality In Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Marie Rose Arong
Kritika Kultura
Nick Joaquin has been read as nostalgic of Filipino Hispanic culture. While it’s true that most of Joaquin’s works deal with the country’s Hispanic past, his works account for more than just nostalgia. A lot of studies that make use of postcolonial theory show how this Filipino Hispanic culture as depicted in Joaquin’s works can be construed as a form of resistance against US neocolonialism, on one hand, and nativist nationalism, on another. Using postcolonial and narrative theories, this paper argues that Joaquin’s The Woman Who Had Two Navels should also be read as a strategy for resisting US neocolonialism …
Juan Mencarini And Amateur Photography In Fin-De-Siècle China, Xavier Ortells-Nicolau
Juan Mencarini And Amateur Photography In Fin-De-Siècle China, Xavier Ortells-Nicolau
Kritika Kultura
Juan Mencarini Pierotti (1860 – 1939) was a Spanish employee of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service of China from 1881 to 1912 and later a businessman in the import-export sector with base in Shanghai. Parallel to his professional career, Mencarini pioneered in the history of postage stamps in East Asia, contributed to learned societies with articles and lectures, and was reputed among the foreign community of the treaty ports as an accomplished amateur pictorialist photographer. Based on previously unexamined repositories, contemporary press records, and the cataloguing and analysis of over two hundred photographs, this paper analyzes Mencarini’s preserved corpus of …
Landlessness, War, And Displacement In Literatures Of Mindanao And Sulu, Sherwin Mendoza
Landlessness, War, And Displacement In Literatures Of Mindanao And Sulu, Sherwin Mendoza
Kritika Kultura
This monograph attempts to clarify the relationships of Filipino Americans to the diaspora of Christian settler colonists in Mindanao with the hope of facilitating solidarity between Filipino Americans and the peoples of Mindanao and Sulu. It begins with a consideration of Carlos Bulosan, perhaps the most prominent figure within the discipline of Filipino American Studies, in terms of the brief appearance of Mindanao in America is in the Heart. The bulk of the monograph, however, is centered on literatures of the Southern Philippines, a region that is often overlooked within the discipline of Filipino American Studies, and in particular it …
Fall Of Grace: Nora Aunor As Cinema, Patrick D. Flores
Fall Of Grace: Nora Aunor As Cinema, Patrick D. Flores
Kritika Kultura
Nora Aunor is enlisted in this speculation as a medium in the register of both the cinema and the transmission of spirit. The key trajectory is the oft-cited film Himala, which opens up a conceptual space for mediumship, the technology of the actress, her biography and corpus of art, and the devotion to her person. The essay constellates a set of texts including the sculpture in honor of Elsa, the main character of Himala, the film Silip, and the life of a fan. Nora, the performative vessel of Elsa, becomes fundamentally cinematic. It is through her that Elsa is fleshed …

Kritika Kultura
Although vital to the existence of the Philippine movie industry, stardom has rarely garnered scholarly attention apart from the auteurist (film-artist) or biographical modes. Part of the reason is external, in the sense that media-studies approaches to star-text discourses emerged relatively recently, and may still be in the process of further refinement. However, a crucial internal reason is that the primary Philippine example, Nora Aunor, inadvertently affirms the earlier, now-conventional approach by virtue of her singular dominance as both top star and top multimedia performer. This study will track relevant trends in star studies vis-à-vis Philippine scholarly output, and will …
The Black Nazarene, Quiapo, And The Weak Philippine State, Mark Joseph Calano
The Black Nazarene, Quiapo, And The Weak Philippine State, Mark Joseph Calano
Kritika Kultura
The dialectical relationship between the religious performances to the Black Nazarene and the informality of space in Quiapo has an implication in the “construction” of space and the formation of a weak Philippine state. The dynamics between poón, panata, and pananampalataya (elements in the discussion of the devotion to the Black Nazarene) and the barongbarong, looban, at hanapbuhay (elements in the discussion of the informality of Quiapo) helps in the construction of the spatiality of Quiapo. Quiapo is constructed as the place of the play between pananampalataya and hanapbuhay; the implication of this mutual dependency to the state is a …
“Not Here To Steal Sheep”: A Reading Of The History And Politics Of Catholicism In Thailand, Coeli Barry
“Not Here To Steal Sheep”: A Reading Of The History And Politics Of Catholicism In Thailand, Coeli Barry
Kritika Kultura
This article investigates how Catholicism has had to evolve and adapt in order to sustain itself in Thailand. As Siam/Thailand developed through economic, political and cultural interactions with Western powers, Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular served as a site on which Thai national identity was forged in response to these interactions. Christianity was an ‘other’ against which Thai Buddhist identity coalesced yet the appeal of first Catholic and later Protestant missionary education was very strong. This article combines interpretive historical method and analysis of contemporary shifts that reflect a more assertive Thai Catholic Church. In so doing, the …

Hàn Mặc Tử (1912-1940): A New Moon For The Season Of The New Evangelization In Vietnamese Catholicism, Hưng Trung Phạm Sj
Kritika Kultura
Since its arrival to Vietnam, Catholicism has often been known or accused as either heterodox religion or religion of superstition. Efforts to inculturate the Christian faith into Vietnamese cultures have begun from early missionaries in Vietnam in the early seventeenth century to church leadership in Vietnam today. At the early twentieth century, the poetry of Hàn Mặc Tử (1912 – 1940) has demonstrated a new level of inculturation where the Christian faith no longer remains at the level of “superficial adaptation” but has become a principle that animates, directs, and unifies Vietnamese cultures, transforming and remaking it so as to …

Global Aestheticscapes: Re-Imag(In)Ing The Global Experiences Of Selected Filipino Artists Through Their Installation Artworks, Clod Marlan Krister V. Yambao
Kritika Kultura
This paper attempts to look at the contemporary global condition of Filipino art production by using the term “aestheticscapes”1 as a critical category of analysis. The confluence of the terms “aesthetics” and “-scapes” allows us to stretch the language of aesthetic production in a global scale of interactions, exchanges, contacts, circulations, negotiations, and amalgamations of geo and ethnoaesthetic positions. Significantly, “aestheticscapes” magnify the conditions of epistemic relations between global powers and discourses of the agencies of the artists via history, geography, aesthetic epistemes, and other social narratives. By looking at the installation artworks of selected Filipino diasporic, migrant, and mobile …
Queer Aswang Transmedia: Folklore As Camp, Bliss Cua Lim
Queer Aswang Transmedia: Folklore As Camp, Bliss Cua Lim
Kritika Kultura
In recent years, the aswang—a supernatural creature of Philippine folklore that is often associated with female monstrosity and patriarchal misogyny—is being flamboyantly queered across a range of media. The aswang is a centuries-old transmedial, transgeneric figure whose monstrosity has been interpellated by gender-essentialist agendas while nonetheless epitomizing disruptive gender instabilities. In the handful of texts that comprise queer aswang transmedia—a 2011 Filipino novel (Ricky Lee’s Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata [Amapola in 65 Chapters]), mainstream film (Mga Bata ng Lagim [Children of Terror], dir. Mar S. Torres, 1964), and amateur digital video (Amabilis 2, Napoleon Lustre, 2011)—the aswang, an …
The Zobel Nexus, Patrick D. Flores
The Zobel Nexus, Patrick D. Flores
Kritika Kultura
Fernando Zobel is an important figure in Philippine art history. His influence is wide and deep, from art making to formation of taste and to the production of discourse on iconography and identity. This essay focuses on his role in generating critical texts on the history of art in the Philippines, initiating a much-needed discussion on the categories of form, the cultural context of style, and the criteria for evaluating the value of objects. As a collector and connoisseur, Zobel endeavored to significantly set the terms with which the history of colonial and modern art would be written. Such an …
The Catholic Church In The Philippine Public Sphere, Ranilo B. Hermida
The Catholic Church In The Philippine Public Sphere, Ranilo B. Hermida
Kritika Kultura
Whether religion has a place in the public sphere is a complex issue. Many thinkers believed that the rationalization process of modernity would result in secularization and banish religion into the private sphere. Religion has not only survived; it has even taken an active role in the political affairs of the state. This has been the case in countries like the Philippines where the publicity and activism of the Catholic hierarchy in the political public sphere of the country have been sustained and to some extent dominant. Said publicity and activism are carried out in the name of religion and …

The Nigerian Diaspora And National Development: Contributions, Challenges, And Lessons From Other Countries, Sharkdam Wapmuk, Oluwatooni Akinkuotu, Vincent Ibonye
Kritika Kultura
The paper, in general terms, clarifies and discusses the link between the Diaspora and the issue of development in general, and, in specific terms examines the role as well as the huge potential of the Nigerian Diaspora in national development. Drawing lessons from the historical as well as contemporary experiences of some countries such as India, China, Philippines, Italy, and Ghana, the paper argues that the Diaspora can be an agent of national development. In analyzing the different Diasporas and remittances from Diasporas from the different countries, the paper took cognizance of the fact that they are not similar to …
Manuel Blanco’S El Indio And The History Of A Rumor, Resil B. Mojares
Manuel Blanco’S El Indio And The History Of A Rumor, Resil B. Mojares
Kritika Kultura
The paper explores the social meanings that can be elicited from tracking the history of a rumor. It takes as its example the nineteenth-century apocryphal story of an Augustinian friar who labored for years on a treatise on the character of the Philippine native (indio) only to leave behind, upon his death, a book of blank pages. Tracing the origins and passage of the rumor and unpacking the various interpretations of the story, the paper demonstrates what can be gained from the study of rumors in Philippine history.
Performing Elusive Homecomings: Mobility, Embodiment, And Diasporic Filipino Youth, Martin F. Manalansan Iv
Performing Elusive Homecomings: Mobility, Embodiment, And Diasporic Filipino Youth, Martin F. Manalansan Iv
Kritika Kultura
The Filipino global diaspora has precipitated the circulation of embodied modes of identification and belonging. This paper focuses on the experiences of Filipino young people who were born and/or raised abroad, and who have returned to the Philippines to seek fame and economic mobility in the entertainment industry. These migrant hopefuls, unlike older counterparts, enact the material tensions and semantic contradictions that form part of popular discourse around life abroad. As such, institutional media practices and mass audience perceptions mirror such conditions and create shifting systems of valuation around such things as skin color, accent, and bodily comportment. To respond …

A Question Of Izzat: Honor, Shame And Ownership Among Sunni Muslims In South Asia And The British Diaspora, Lila Ramos Shahani
Kritika Kultura
This paper is part of a larger project that looks at Asian writers in the English-speaking world. It focuses on literature representing British-Muslim identities in relation to post- 9/11 and post-7/7 debates on national identity, cultural and religious expression, and the future of multiculturalism in Britain. While the postcolonial paradigm offers a rich site for examining the long-term consequences of colonialism in relation to first- and second- generation writers, the complex politics of location in recent British-South Asian fiction points to the emergence of a new set of positionalities. I argue that much contemporary minority writing has come to reflect …
