The Mausoleums Of Fatima Khatun And Al-Ashraf Khalil, Naglaa Muhammad Sami Hassan Jun 2019

The Mausoleums Of Fatima Khatun And Al-Ashraf Khalil, Naglaa Muhammad Sami Hassan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will conduct an architectural analysis of two nearly contemporary mausoleums situated on the northern tip of the Southern Cemetery of Cairo near the Sayyida Nafisa shrine. The Southern Cemetery is the oldest one, which stretches from the east at Muqattam hill to the south at Fustat. The mausoleums of the princess Fatima Khatun and al-Sultan al-Ashraf Khalil date to the late 13th century. Among the interesting aspects of the mausoleum of Fatima Khatun (Umm al-Salih), the wife of al-Mansur Qalawun, is its unique Maghribi style minaret. In addition, apart from his splendid mausoleum, al-Ashraf Khalil, Qalawun’s son, constructed …

The Potential Of Architecture: The Meaning And Purpose Of Commemorative Architecture In Islamic Civilizations, Natasha Pradhan Jun 2019

The Potential Of Architecture: The Meaning And Purpose Of Commemorative Architecture In Islamic Civilizations, Natasha Pradhan

Theses and Dissertations

I have always found places that seem to exist "out of time" so to speak, extremely peaceful and alluring. These could include cemeteries, or even monumental and out-of-time structures like the pyramids. Yet there is something even stronger one feels when inside such a structure. That is, when a space - architecture - has been created that allows one to not simply witness something that seems to exist in eternity, but to reside within it. One cannot divorce these structures - and the human desire to construct them - from religion and religiosity. For throughout time, commemorative architecture has played …

"Dhakirat Al-Alam": Palestinian Traumatic Memory In Three Works By Elias Khoury, Nourhan Tewfik Jun 2019

"Dhakirat Al-Alam": Palestinian Traumatic Memory In Three Works By Elias Khoury, Nourhan Tewfik

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project traces the development of a Palestinian counter-narrative of trauma in the literary works of Lebanese novelist, editor and critic Elias Khoury. It does so by looking at three novels by Khoury: the first work is Mamlakat al-ghurabā’ (The Kingdom of Strangers, 1993), which introduces his project on narrating the Palestinian experience and meditates on the potential structure of a Palestinian trauma narrative. Probably his most read work, the second novel, Bāb al-shams (Gate of the Sun, 1998), builds on these beginnings by re-enacting an incomplete, fragmented and non-teleological narrative of Palestinian traumatic memory. The same preoccupation with …

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the realization and perception of the speech act of refusal among German Learners of Arabic as a Foreign Language and native Egyptian speakers cross-culturally. Besides, it examines the extent of pragmatic transfer from L1 and its nature of being negative or positive one. Three groups participated in the study: eight native speakers of Egyptian Arabic, eight AFL German learners, and three native speakers of German. The data were collected using enhanced open-ended role plays. Furthermore, to increase the creditability of the interaction data, the study triangulated the data by utilizing retrospective verbal reports. Both quantitative and qualitative …

Law, Love And Violence: Interfaith Romance In Modern Egypt, Mariam El-Maghlawy Feb 2019

Law, Love And Violence: Interfaith Romance In Modern Egypt, Mariam El-Maghlawy

Theses and Dissertations

For the past few decades, many incidents of sectarian violence have been triggered by rumors of interfaith sexual and romantic relationships between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Egypt. This thesis argues that the ways in which the Egyptian modern state chooses to govern women’s bodies and address the Coptic question has inevitably enabled sectarian violence witnessed today to take on its current form. One of the main implications of the modernization of the Egyptian legal system was the state’s ability to “jam” women, family, sexuality and religion into the private sphere, as opposed to the public sphere. This essentially has …

Land, Power And Interests: Reshaping The Law Of Endowments Of Agricultural Lands In Mamluk Egypt, Dalia Hussein Jan 2019

Land, Power And Interests: Reshaping The Law Of Endowments Of Agricultural Lands In Mamluk Egypt, Dalia Hussein

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to study the development of the law of endowment of agricultural lands in Mamluk Egypt, by contextualizing historically the fatwas related to these endowments. I argue that, in light of the prevailing economic and social circumstances, legal development during this era occurred as a response to the political, social and economic interests of the religious scholars and of the ruling elite, and as a result of the interaction between the interests of the former and power of the latter.

Surviving The Arab Uprisings: Political Regimes And State Responses, Hood Ahmed Sep 2018

Surviving The Arab Uprisings: Political Regimes And State Responses, Hood Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

The Arab uprisings threatened authoritarian states across the Arab world with unprecedented levels of mobilization. The nature of these challenges, the states’ responses and the outcomes have been, however, markedly uneven. In accounting for this divergence, while some approaches have examined the structural preconditions for transitions, others have emphasized the impact of interactions between different political actors. This thesis draws on both approaches through examining how the state’s institutional structure shapes the opportunities and constraints of states in employing different authoritarian strategies. It examines why and how different regimes have used different authoritarian strategies to survive and stabilize. In responding …

Politics And Identity In Design: An Analysis Of Two Contemporary Cairene Mosques, Leena Sadek Jun 2018

Politics And Identity In Design: An Analysis Of Two Contemporary Cairene Mosques, Leena Sadek

Theses and Dissertations

Forging a national identity has been an issue many Islamic nations have undergone and struggled with in the wake of a colonial era long established in the third world. The attempts at achieving such a goal have been varied, with many seeking to revive their pre-colonial past under new and modern implications. The success of such attempts has not yet yielded a satisfactory template that can be applied without question in one nation, let alone across the Islamic world. Nonetheless, such a quintessential conundrum has not hindered the building program of many nations, who are still striving to achieve their …

The Muslim Wives' Share In The Matrimonial Wealth: Between Theory And Practice, Yomna Amr Shaffei Jun 2018

The Muslim Wives' Share In The Matrimonial Wealth: Between Theory And Practice, Yomna Amr Shaffei

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims at responding to the problem of not monetizing women’s labor in the household through the financial Islamic right of al-Kadd wa al-Se’aya which acknowledges that women are economic partners in the matrimonial wealth in exchange to their labor. The right of al-Kadd wa al-Se’aya has its roots in the Qur’anic in verse 32 in Surat al-Nisaa’ which in one of its interpretations links labor to financial compensation, in the same manner as did Ibn Khaldun, Karl Marx, John Locke and Adam Smith. Furthermore, the thesis attempts to illustrate that the right of al-Kadd wa al-Se’aya was debated …

Tracing The Islamic Influences On The Garden Design Of Nineteenth-Century Cairene Gardens, Radwa M. Elfardy Jun 2018

Tracing The Islamic Influences On The Garden Design Of Nineteenth-Century Cairene Gardens, Radwa M. Elfardy

Theses and Dissertations

To be able to analyze and trace such influences one must be aware of the contextual development of landscape architecture of the nineteenth century. A major factor was the designer himself, Jean Pierre Barillet Deschamps, and his assistant Gustave Delchevalerie, both of whom influenced greatly the landscape architectural development of nineteenth-century Cairo. To be able to evaluate their work in Cairo, their original works in Paris must be evaluated first. Deschamps’ most noted works in Paris are the Bois De Boulogne (1855-60) and the Park Monceau (1860). In this thesis, I research the double impact of Ottoman landscape design and …

Imprisonment For Insolvent Debtors In Egypt With Specific Reference To Al-Gharemoun Cases, Nivert Elsherif

Theses and Dissertations

Historically, handling debts was a major issue described in the Islamic legal realm and handling insolvent debtors is a category thereof. Recently, in the 21st century in Egypt, the numbers of incarcerated insolvent debtors has increased dramatically constituting one third of the Egyptian prison population. This paper addresses the legal developments relating to adjudication and imprisonment of debtors since the time of the prophet throughout the development of the Islamic legal jurists’ literature that supported practical solutions to debtors’ insolvencies. Investigation of middle age Egyptian and Ottoman court cases are incorporated to prove the success of the Islamic legal system …

Color Symbolism In Islamic Book Painting, Imane Sadek Abaza Feb 2018

Color Symbolism In Islamic Book Painting, Imane Sadek Abaza

Theses and Dissertations

Light plays a central role in the Quran. The contrast between light and dark demonstrates a pivotal conception in the Islamic faith. It is the difference between knowledge and ignorance, faith and infidelity, and right and wrong. As depicted by al-Ghazali, God is the source of the ultimate light, and by seeing that light a person reaches a state of revelation since only the faithful see that light. The ignorant or unfaithful live in darkness without the light of God or faith to guide them through life. Considering the importance of this concept in the Islamic faith, colors as the …

Cairo: Mapping The Neoliberal City In Literature A Study Of: The Heron, Being Abbas El Abd And Utopia, Nesma Gewily Feb 2018

Cairo: Mapping The Neoliberal City In Literature A Study Of: The Heron, Being Abbas El Abd And Utopia, Nesma Gewily

Theses and Dissertations

While many scholars have explained neoliberalism and its impact on the economic, political and social spheres, writers have successfully grasped the everyday realities created by the implementation of the neoliberal policies. In my thesis, I am going to use literary maps to analyze three novels written by Egyptian writers at different stages of the neoliberal project. The novels are: Malik al-haÌ'zin (1983) (The Heron, 2005) by Ibrahim Aslan, An takun 'Abbas al-Abd (2003) (Being Abbas El Abd, 2009) by Ahmed Alaidiy and Yutubiya (2008) (Utopia, 2011) by Ahmed Khaled Towfik. Mapping the three novels demonstrate the changes that the city …

The Analysis Of The Key Doctrines Of Boko Haram (Jama’At Ahl-I- Sunnah Li Al-Da’Wati Wa Al-Jihad)., Aisha Muhammad Iyawa

Theses and Dissertations

The issue of Boko Haram has received considerable critical attention. It is one of the contemporary threats of the globe . They created a devastation that is having an adverse impact on Islam and the socioeconomic situation in the region and in some parts of Africa. There is a growing body of literature on Boko Haram, mostly focusing on the political aspects. Little emphasis has been put on the religious approach. This study is important because it will approach the issue from a religious perspective. This will be done by analyzing some of their doctrines to challenge and correct some …

The Politics Of Burden-Sharing In The Refugee Regime: The Refugee As Point Of Reference, Mark Van De Fliert Feb 2018

The Politics Of Burden-Sharing In The Refugee Regime: The Refugee As Point Of Reference, Mark Van De Fliert

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies international relations theory to better understand the political maneuvering of states in refugee affairs. It argues that previous contributions to this debate have used a wrong paradigm to describe burden-sharing politics in the refugee regime, resulting in models which are too static to capture the high-politics of refugee affairs. In particular, the thesis criticizes the "North vs. South" model proposed by Betts (2009), which argues that the burden-sharing politics in the refugee regime can be understood as an opposition between states in the global "North" and global "South". Where Betts uses the geographic position of the state …

"Many A Wish Has Turned To Dust" The Royal Aq Quyunlu Khamsa Of Nizami, Dalia R. Al Nashar

Theses and Dissertations

…[A]nd our reason for relating this narrative is as follows. Before now the late padishah Babur Mirza intended to complete this eloquent book, which is attributed to the “Treasure of Ganja,” scatterer of riches from the treasure house of the Khamsa, Sultan of Poets Nizami, and commanded Azhar, who was one of the rarities of his age in calligraphy, to copy it. Not yet had [Babur Mirza] plucked the rose of desire from the garden of completion when the barren wind of autumn of fate left not a leaf on the tree of his life. Thereafter, Pir-Budaq Mirza was seized …

The Innovations In The Ottoman Legal Administration:The 16th Century Between Theory And Practice, Honey El-Moghazi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to bring to light some of the most formative innovations in the Ottoman legal administration that unfolded by the 16th Century. It serves to macroscopically trace back some of the major developments that led to the crystallization of the Ottoman legal system and the state's administration of justice. This study thus aims to demonstrate the process of the making of Ottoman law through the early attempts of codifying a comprehensive legal code together with the creation of a unique form of "Ottoman Hanafism". Furthermore, it aims to examine the role of some of the …

From Text To Screenplay (Gendering The Nation In Mariam Naoum's Literary Adaptations), May Serhan Feb 2018

From Text To Screenplay (Gendering The Nation In Mariam Naoum's Literary Adaptations), May Serhan

Theses and Dissertations

Mariam Naoum's literary adaptations to television in the aftermath of the 2011 Egyptian uprising have carried wide cultural, political and literary implications, especially where the "woman question" is concerned. With Islamism and militarism both threatening to exclude a wide sector of women from the historical narrative of the uprising and the subsequent nation-building process, and with a male-dominated literary establishment that systematically relegates women to secondary roles, Naoum's writing re-affirmed gendered agency both on the level of social engagement and authorship. Chapter one of the thesis provides the theoretical framework and historical backdrop necessary for understanding how female writing can …

Farmer's Regulation By Muhammad Ali 1830 From Legal And Social Perspectives, Enas Moustafa Jun 2017

Farmer's Regulation By Muhammad Ali 1830 From Legal And Social Perspectives, Enas Moustafa

Theses and Dissertations

The FR played an important role in the Egyptian rural life. It shaped the relation between the farmers and the state. It mainly helped the state to impose tax, collect it and make use of it. The social and anthropological changes the FR caused helped in the formation of modern Egypt. However the FR penalties were characterised with severity, as the punishment was not compatible with the offence being committed. This cruelness made the Egyptian peasant tries to escape the land and always have a hostile relation with the system. The thesis is to examine the various FR articles, its …

Tropical Mudejar: Mosque-Type Chapels In Mexico And Their Role In Early Spanish America., Luis Carlos Barragan Castro Jun 2017

Tropical Mudejar: Mosque-Type Chapels In Mexico And Their Role In Early Spanish America., Luis Carlos Barragan Castro

Theses and Dissertations

Mudejar, the architectural style that emerged in Spain during the Reconquista, is relatively common in Spanish Colonial architecture in America, but it was merely an echo of the contemporary buildings constructed in Spain during the years of the colony. The presence of completely Islamic structures, however, such as the Mosque-type chapels, defy that observation, because the hypostyle plan had not been used in Spain for at least a hundred years. This research compares five chapels built in Mexico during the sixteenth century that follow a hypostyle plan, which resemble mosques in almost every aspect. It also proposes that these Mosque-type …

The Other Copts: Between Sectarianism, Nationalism And Catholic Coptic Activism In Minya., Ana Carol Torres Gutiérrez Jun 2017

The Other Copts: Between Sectarianism, Nationalism And Catholic Coptic Activism In Minya., Ana Carol Torres Gutiérrez

Theses and Dissertations

The partnership between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Egyptian State has been a political technique that has left little space for religious diversity and has overshadowed other Egyptian minorities. Eschewing this dichotomous illusion and blowing the dust off of Missionary Studies that has left Catholic Copts in the past, this ethnographic study gives an account of the life of a Catholic Coptic NGO, the Jesuit Brothers Association for Development (JBAD), within the context of the uncontested capital of sectarian violence in Egypt: Minya. Using participant observation, focus groups, and interviews, this study intends to shed a light on the …

The Maq'ad Of Amir Mamay Al-Sayfi: The History And Context Of A Mamluk Jewel, Amira Ayman Osman

Theses and Dissertations

Walking down Al-Mi‘uzz Street, one is bombarded by the spirit of historical buildings from every side. The street is usually buzzing with tourists and local residents going in and out of monuments, buying and selling or taking photos. It is rare that they venture out to side streets such as the wide Bayt al-Qadi Street, that extends next to the complex of Sultan Qalawun. Upon entering the street, the scene significantly changes and the noise levels drop. Within less than a hundred meters, one arrives at Bayt al-Qadi Square, a humble space that once belonged to the grandest of palaces. …

Al-Ghazali's Integral Epistemology: A Critical Analysis Of The Jewels Of The Quran, Amani Elshimi Jun 2017

Al-Ghazali's Integral Epistemology: A Critical Analysis Of The Jewels Of The Quran, Amani Elshimi

Theses and Dissertations

The Jewels of the Quran by renowned Islamic scholar Abu Hamid al-Ghazali has usually been published as a two-volume publication, consisting of al-Ghazali’s hierarchy of sciences, followed by a thematic classification of verses from the Quran. A recent edition of the book includes a third chapter which is often published alone as The Book of Forty Religious Principles, but which al-Ghazali makes reference to in his introduction. A thorough, contextualized, critical analysis of the 3-chapter publication reveals al-Ghazali’s more comprehensive integral framework of knowledge – one which stems from and is held by a core experience of the Divine, and …

Tradition, Change And Social Reform In The Fatwas Of The Imam Muhammad 'Abduh, Malak Tewfik Badrawi May 2017

Tradition, Change And Social Reform In The Fatwas Of The Imam Muhammad 'Abduh, Malak Tewfik Badrawi

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes to examine some of the fatwas, or legal opinions, issued by Muhammad ‘Abduh, and taken from the manuscript ledgers at Dār al-Iftā’ al-Miṣriyah. The fatwas involve official and semi-official issues, problems of personal status, financial matters, and relations with others. They were picked for their clarity, peculiarity, diversity, and will be examined for their relevance to the needs of various groups of society at that time and for the legal argumentation used. The fatwas will be examined to try to determine ‘Abduh’s legal approach, and his methodology when dealing with everyday issues. Fatwas are also useful tools …

Al-Ghazālī'S Conception Of The Purification Of The Self: Reflections From Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm Al-Dīn (Revival Of The Religious Knowledge), Soha Ahmad Helwa

Theses and Dissertations

Al-Ghazālī's name and his book Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn are attached to self-purification, which is an essential part in the religion of Islam. This study does not seek to analyze all the details of Al-Ghazālī's program to purify the self. Rather, it focuses on delineating a framework - from Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn - concerning his understanding of self-purification. This framework mainly includes his method of purifying the self. In the midst of this, many of Al-Ghazālī's psychological insights are extracted, under the umbrella of the Islamic perspective of psychology. Among these insights are some related to his perception of the human …

Khul' In Egypt Between Theory And Practice A Critical Analysis For Khul' Implementation, Nivine Samaha

Theses and Dissertations

As a Prelude, Law is a social Phenomenon that reflects the culture of the society producing it and adapts to the Requirements of the environment in which it exists being a fundamental element of its structure and cultural character. However, this is not always the case in reality and in order to detect the level of accuracy of Schacht's comment and to what extent it walks in conformity with the mundane practicalities, this study is being presented to critically re-assess the "Khul'" Law implementation in Egypt throughout the last fifteen years since its first emanation in year 2000, by the …

This is a study of the monumental epigraphy of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate, also known as the Sultanate of Rum, which emerged in Anatolia following the Great Seljuk victory in Manzikert against the Byzantine Empire in the year 1071. It was heavily weakened in the Battle of Kose Dag in 1243 against the Mongols but lasted until the end of the thirteenth century. The history of this sultanate which survived many wars, the Crusades and the Mongol invasion is analyzed through their epigraphy with regard to the influence of political and cultural shifts. The identity of the sultanate and its …

The Interpretation Of Islamic Art And Architecture Of Cairo In European Paintings In The 19th Century, Heba Sheta

Theses and Dissertations

After the French expedition to Egypt in 1798, travelers tempted to discover this newly revealed land. European orientalist painters, when in Cairo, encountered an exotic culture. They documented Islamic architecture, as well as religious and social traditions and rituals. Their paintings became as tableaux vivants such as the oriental settings in universal fairs in the 19th century. These painters could be classified into two different groups. On the one hand, a group of painters focused on the documentation of Islamic monuments with their decorative and architectural features. Most of these European painters resided in Egypt for many years, and sometimes …
