Re-Thinking Initiative Of The Egyptian JamaʿA Islamiyya In 1997, Maissa Hussein Niaz

Theses and Dissertations

The rising worldwide danger of Islamist militancy arouses the need for the search of solutions for the containment of this danger at a highest priority. This thesis examines the case of the successful violence-ending experience of the Egyptian Jamaʿa Islamiyya (EJI), being a model for conflict resolution with the political regime and an example of the possible de-radicalization of one of the most militant Islamist groups in the modern history of Egypt. The study focuses on the Renouncing - Violence Initiative that was issued by EJI in 1997 and the subsequent issuing of a “Correction of Conceptions Series” that aimed …

The Development Of Acoustics In The Religious Architecture Of Cairo From The Arab Conquest Through The Ottoman Period 640-1914, Ahmad Hussein Jun 2016

The Development Of Acoustics In The Religious Architecture Of Cairo From The Arab Conquest Through The Ottoman Period 640-1914, Ahmad Hussein

Theses and Dissertations

It is strongly believed that the scholarship in the field of Islamic art and architecture ‎still has many important under-researched areas, behind its visual aspects, that need to ‎be explored and analyzed. Archaeoacoustics, which is scientifically known as "The ‎archaeology of sound," is considered one of the significant disciplines in the field of ‎acoustics due to its role in revealing priceless information about different ‎archaeological sites and historic buildings around the world from the acoustic ‎perspective. Unfortunately, the archaeoacoustic studies of historic Islamic religious ‎buildings, especially in Cairo, are relatively neglected. Accordingly, this study aims in ‎the first place at …

Resistance In Political Theatre Of Saadallah Wannus, Iman Ahmed Alayyat Jun 2016

Resistance In Political Theatre Of Saadallah Wannus, Iman Ahmed Alayyat

Theses and Dissertations

Sa’d Allah Wannūs (1941-1997) was a renowned Syrian playwright whose plays aimed at stimulating audience’s reactions against the impacts of the political situation after the setback of 1967. Wannūs first highlights the complex interrelationship between the rise of power structures and hegemonic rule colored by the leaders’ aspirations. Such collision with inexorable mapping of reality incites the audience to incarnate an inspiring future that is not influenced by the past or co-opted with the complex interrelated power structures. Wannūs portrays a world that the French philosophers Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) and Felix Guattari (1930-1992) theorize as the “rhizome” in which hegemonic …

Les Phalanges Libanaises: Identity Construction And The Perception Of The Self & Other, Aseel Yehiya Azab Apr 2016

Les Phalanges Libanaises: Identity Construction And The Perception Of The Self & Other, Aseel Yehiya Azab

The Undergraduate Research Journal

The purpose of this paper is to study the identity construction of the Lebanese Phalange Party, postulating that its view of the Other is deeply entrenched within its own development. Strongly regarded as a model of Fascist thought and action, the Phalange, as a popular manifestation of Maronite nationalist thought, Lebanonism, seems to be destined for eternal clash with a similarly endless Other, but this latter is not formulated on religious basis only: the conceptual idea behind the other remains the same throughout the Kataeb’s history of conflict, but its face changes as the nature of the threat to the …

Piety And Power: Pious Endowments In The Bahrī Mamlūk Period, 1250-1382, Muhammad Shaaban Feb 2016

Piety And Power: Pious Endowments In The Bahrī Mamlūk Period, 1250-1382, Muhammad Shaaban

Theses and Dissertations

The narrative chronicles that document the Mamlūk Empire frequently mention the various pious endowments (sing. waqf, pl. awqāf) of their day. This institution’s importance to the social, political and economic spheres of the Mamlūk Empire is evident by the numerous treatises written about pious endowment and the impressive amount of endowed buildings built from the mid-thirteenth century till the early sixteenth century. This study intends to investigate why this institution became so pervasive during the Bahrī period (648-792 A.H./1250-1382 A.D.) by examining endowed institutions in their entirety. While investigating the endowments of Qalāwūnid sultans, this thesis argues that endowments were …

Imitation And Originality In Four Poems By Al-Hạ̄JjʿUmar Ibn AbīBakr Ibn ʿUthmāN Krachi (Ca 1856–1934), Jibril Abubakr Gabid

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to look at the concepts of imitation and originality in the works of al-Ḥājj ʿUmar ibn Abī Bakr ibn ʿUthmān Krachi (ca 1856–1934) through the analysis of his four poems. These poems are based on the three main genres of Arabic poetry: panegyric (madīḥ), satire (hijāʾ), and eulogy (rithāʾ). My analysis of these poems is limited to structure, theme and content in order to explore the various ways in which our author imitates the classical mode of poetic composition and at the same time provides his readers with a picture of a different cultural …

Radicalization Of Zaydi Reform Attempts, Maysaa Shuja Al Deen Feb 2016

Radicalization Of Zaydi Reform Attempts, Maysaa Shuja Al Deen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is studying the development of the Zaydi doctrine in order to understand the reasons of emerging the Zaydi radical group, the Houthis. The studies about Zaydism are few, since it is a doctrine that only exists in Yemen, so it is considered a doctrine of a minor group. The studies about the contemporary Zaydism are much fewer, which leads to misunderstand the Houthi phenomenon. Zaydism has a long history in Yemen and the Zaydi Imamate controlled Yemen or the northern parts of Yemen for hundreds years. Therefore, the overthrow of the Imamate in 1962 and the establishment of …

Teachers' Perceptions On Formulaic Language, Shaimaa Nabil Abdel Aziz

Theses and Dissertations

Formulaic sequences (FS) are being increasingly recognized in second language learning as a key language component that has a direct impact on language proficiency. A key aspect of FS are how it can be effectively integrated within language teaching and what practices could be used to present FS and introduce it to students. Recently, researchers have reported a growing interest in using FS in teaching language in classrooms. A mixed method of data analysis was adopted in this study where both qualitative and quantitative data were collected using three instruments “questionnaire, observations and interviews”. 75 Arabic teachers participated in the …

The Conservation History Of The Mausoleum Of Shajarat Al-Durr, Farah Shoukry

Theses and Dissertations

This M.A. thesis aims to critically analyze the conservation history of the mausoleum of Shajarat al-Durr. The first chapter presents the biography of the sultāna in relation to the architectural analysis of the mausoleum. The second chapter investigates the theoretical concepts of conservation from an Islamic history point of view. Chapter three traces the conservation history of the mausoleum with a focus on the work of the Comité. The fourth chapter evaluates …

Farm To Fork: Cairo’S Food Supply And Distribution During The Mamluk Sultanate (1250-1517), Anthony Teke Quickel

Theses and Dissertations

The wealth of Cairo’s markets throughout the Mamlūk period is well attested in the sources. From roving peddlers to stationary markets, the city’s food supply was a testament to Egypt’s agricultural bounty. This study attempts to understand the food economy that provisioned these food markets. In doing so, Egypt’s agricultural production, its transportation network, distribution system, and Cairo’s markets are discussed with a focus towards understanding both the nature of the many aspects of the Mamūk food economy as well as the changes occurring within it. In providing an overall description of the mechanisms by which the Mamlūk food economy …

The Sources Of Ibn Tulun's Soffit Decoration, Pamela Mahmoud Azab Feb 2015

The Sources Of Ibn Tulun's Soffit Decoration, Pamela Mahmoud Azab

Theses and Dissertations

Ornamental decoration has been studied extensively by various art historians who have provided a multitude of interpretations for the underlying reasons behind the use of different ornaments as well as the influence different eras had on the design of ornament. Stucco played an important role as a decorative element used throughout the ages; it is considered an inexpensive way of decoration as well as a speedy one. Stucco decoration was also perceived by some to convey special meaning and has been analysed from an architectural as well as a geometrical perspective. This thesis proposes to examine the source of the …

A Morettian Literary Atlas Of Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo In Three Early Realist Novels: Cairo Modern, Khan Al-Khalili, And Midaq Alley, Paul A. Sundberg Feb 2015

A Morettian Literary Atlas Of Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo In Three Early Realist Novels: Cairo Modern, Khan Al-Khalili, And Midaq Alley, Paul A. Sundberg

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis includes a variey of “literary map experiements” on a dataset of mappable, non-generic, places found in three early realist “Cairo novels” by Naguib Mahfouz: Cairo Modern (1945), Khan al-Khalili (1946) and Midaq Alley (1947) and analyses of the mapped results. Experiments in the “atlas” are conducted on each novel separately and – in a more ‘distant” reading – on combinations of the three novels. The methodology is one originated by Stanford literary historian Franco Moretti in his Atlas of the European Novel 1800-1900 and Graphs, Maps, Trees: Abstract Models for a Lierary History. To the researcher’s knowledge, this …

The Ultras In Egypt: Political Role Before And After January 25th, 2011, Amira Ahmed Mahmoud Taha Feb 2015

The Ultras In Egypt: Political Role Before And After January 25th, 2011, Amira Ahmed Mahmoud Taha

Theses and Dissertations

Since the formal inception of the “Ultras” groups in Egypt in 2007, there has been a rise in the conflict between the Egyptian security apparatus and the soccer fans. And despite their anti-political stance in the early days, the Ultras began to participate in dissent and engage in a confrontational relationship with the state authorities ever since their inception. This was culminated in the critical role they played during the eighteen days in January and February 2011 and in more events to follow since. However, despite this important role and the support they have among Egyptian youth, the Egyptian Ultras …

The Image Of Women In The Interpreted Qur'an: Translations Of Pickthall, Ali, Hilali And Abdel Haleem, Yassmine Muhammad Mahfouz Muhammad

Theses and Dissertations

The Image of Women in the Interpreted Qur’ān: Translations of Pickthall, Ali, Hilālī, and Abdel Haleem By Yassmine Muhammad Mahfouz (Under the supervision of Professor Tahia Abdel Nasser, The American University in Cairo). I have intended this work with the premise of shedding light on the rights of women in the Qur’ān through examining its English translations since this topic has undergone much controversy between patriarchal and Islamophobic camps. However, through the examination of the translations, I have touched on how translation cannot only be problematic but also dangerously influential in presenting the sacred text. The main finding was that …

Pre-Ottoman Minarets In Anatolia, Mohamed Ibrahim Radwan Jun 2014

Pre-Ottoman Minarets In Anatolia, Mohamed Ibrahim Radwan

Theses and Dissertations

It is very difficult to find nowadays a masjid in any of the main Islamic cities, such as Cairo, Istanbul or Baghdad, without a minaret or more flanking any of it’s corners. This is a clear indication of how important this element is in Islamic architecture and may be a good reflection of the symbolic and functional role it played. Studying the origins and different forms of the pre-Ottoman minaret can shed some light on one of the most important aspects of the Islamic architecture in Anatolia and the development of the minaret in the Islamic world. The form of …

The Supposed Dissipation Of Figural Imagery In Mamluk Art: A Study Of Mamluk Iconography, Jennifer Peruski Jun 2014

The Supposed Dissipation Of Figural Imagery In Mamluk Art: A Study Of Mamluk Iconography, Jennifer Peruski

Theses and Dissertations

The arts of the Mamluks are considered a particularly rich field of study stretching over a nearly three hundred year period. Diverse in their make-up, the progression and development of this art began with strong Ayyubid influences that quickly evolved into a style that was uniquely Mamluk. While many historians have argued that figural imagery all but disappeared in these later progressions of Mamluk art, most notably following the reign of the Mamluk sultan al-Nasir Muhammad (1309-1341), the reality of these conclusions is much more complex. Indeed, the lack of conclusively dated materials from these later periods has been a …

Students' Perceptions Of Interaction In A Hybrid Foreign Language (L2) Arabic Course In Light Of Their Affective Domain, Hanan Elsayed Ahmed Eltayeb Youssef

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Hybrid courses were developed to maintain the advantages associated with distance learning, while solving the problem of learner-instructor interaction. This would indicate that successful learner-instructor interaction is one of the core features of this type of class which enables it to best serve the learner. To verify the above, a descriptive, qualitative case study was designed to investigate students' perceptions of interaction (student-instructor and student-student) in a hybrid foreign language Arabic course, taking into account their affective domain. The structure of the hybrid course which was investigated consisted of a videoconferencing session conducted by the main teacher, followed by …

Nubians And Development: 1960-2014, Samantha Allen Feb 2014

Nubians And Development: 1960-2014, Samantha Allen

Theses and Dissertations

From the Aswan dams of the early twentieth century to the ambitious "Toshka" project of today, Egyptian Nubians have watched their former land transform under the rubrics of progress, modernization, and development for over one hundred years. While these mega-projects position themselves as necessary for the greater Egyptian good, their tangible effect on the ground is less clear. For Nubians who lost their homes, lands, and traditional livelihood due to resettlement, the price of development is even higher, posing important questions about the real value of these schemes. This thesis project offers a critical look at the concept of development, …

Hats And Tarbooshes: Identity, Cosmopolitanism, And Violence In 1920s Alexandria, Daniel Woodward Feb 2014

Hats And Tarbooshes: Identity, Cosmopolitanism, And Violence In 1920s Alexandria, Daniel Woodward

Theses and Dissertations

In May of 1921 Alexandria was consumed by demonstrations against the British-backed Adly Cabinet. In a matter of days these protests developed into violence which targeted people based on perceived communal affiliation. In total, 88 people were killed and 238 were wounded. Through a detailed examination of this communal and political violence, a moment that has largely be left out of the Egyptian historical narrative, I provide a greater understanding of how the complex dynamics of identity and power operated in Alexandrian society in this crucial period in the formation of the narrative of Egyptian identity. Utilizing a variety of …

Beyond Aristotelianism: Al-Farabi On Revelation, Humans And Animals In His On The Perfect State, Michael William Stark Feb 2014

Beyond Aristotelianism: Al-Farabi On Revelation, Humans And Animals In His On The Perfect State, Michael William Stark

Theses and Dissertations

In modern times, Aristotelian influence on Islamicate philosophical writing is exaggerated. Al-Fārābī did more than just copy Aristotle, he was an original thinker, and he may have sourced aspects of his thought and writing style from the Qurʾān. Consideration of al-Fārābī’s biography, works and historical context demonstrates his disinclination to base his writings on those of Aristotle. Al-Fārābī’s thoughts in the key area of revelation in al-Madīna al-fāḍila demonstrate his departure from ancient Greek belief in this area, although his use of individual reasoning also shows clearly his occasional disagreement with Islamic doctrine. Differences and commonalities between animals and humans …

The Divine Names In Ibn 'Arabi's Theory Of Oneness Of Existence, Makoto Sawai

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis tries to consider Ibn ʿArabīʼs theory of Oneness of Existence (waḥdat al-wujūd), in terms of his argument of the divine names. It consists of the four chapters. The first chapter is to trace the descriptions of Ibn ʿArabī by Muslim scholars and scholars of Islamic studies. The second chapter discusses the idea of divine names in the context of the self-disclosure (tajallī) of Existence. The analysis in the third chapter is the divine presence (ḥaḍrah), and Ibn ʿArabIʼs explanation of the Mercy (al-Raḥmah) and the Lord (al-Rabb). Corpus-Based Analysis Of Three Arabic Adversative Conjunctions In Current Egyptian Newspapers, Shaemaa Essa Jun 2013

Corpus-Based Analysis Of Three Arabic Adversative Conjunctions In Current Egyptian Newspapers, Shaemaa Essa

Theses and Dissertations

Conjunctions function as cohesive and text building elements in Modern Standard Arabic. They play various semantic and discursive roles at different textual levels: phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph and discourse (Al-Batal, 1990). This study investigates the linguistic behavior of three Arabic adversative conjunctions, namely "innam", baynam, and bal. It draws its data mainly from the sub-corpus of Shruq Columns (2,067,137 words) in the Arabicourpus. A random sample has been collected for "innam" and bal, covering 50% of their instances in the corpus. On the other hand, all the instances of baynam with the adversative meaning have been analyzed due to the …
