Determining Bulk Aerosol Absorption From Off Axis Backscattering Using Rayleigh Beacon Laser Pulses, Julie C. Grossnickle Mar 2020

Determining Bulk Aerosol Absorption From Off Axis Backscattering Using Rayleigh Beacon Laser Pulses, Julie C. Grossnickle

Theses and Dissertations

Aerosol absorption and scattering can play a key role in degrading high energy laser performance in the form of thermal blooming and beam attenuation. Aerosol absorption properties are not completely understood, and thus affect how we are able to quantify expected high energy laser weapon performance. The Air Force Institute of Technology Center for Directed Energy (AFIT CDE) developed both Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) and the High Energy Laser End-to-End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS) code to characterize atmospheric radiative transfer effects and evaluate expected directed energy weapon system performance. These packages enable modeling of total irradiance at given …

Quantum Transpiler Optimization: On The Development, Implementation, And Use Of A Quantum Research Testbed, Brandon K. Kamaka Mar 2020

Quantum Transpiler Optimization: On The Development, Implementation, And Use Of A Quantum Research Testbed, Brandon K. Kamaka

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum computing research is at the cusp of a paradigm shift. As the complexity of quantum systems increases, so does the complexity of research procedures for creating and testing layers of the quantum software stack. However, the tools used to perform these tasks have not experienced the increase in capability required to effectively handle the development burdens involved. This case is made particularly clear in the context of IBM QX Transpiler optimization algorithms and functions. IBM QX systems use the Qiskit library to create, transform, and execute quantum circuits. As coherence times and hardware qubit counts increase and qubit topologies …

Characterizing Uncertainty In Correlated Response Variables For Pareto Front Optimization, Peter A. Calhoun Mar 2020

Characterizing Uncertainty In Correlated Response Variables For Pareto Front Optimization, Peter A. Calhoun

Theses and Dissertations

Current research provides a method to incorporate uncertainty into Pareto front optimization by simulating additional response surface model parameters according to a Multivariate Normal Distribution (MVN). This research shows that analogous to the univariate case, the MVN understates uncertainty, leading to overconfident conclusions when variance is not known and there are few observations (less than 25-30 per response). This research builds upon current methods using simulated response surface model parameters that are distributed according to an Multivariate t-Distribution (MVT), which can be shown to produce a more accurate inference when variance is not known. The MVT better addresses uncertainty in …

An Analysis Of Learning Curve Theory & Diminishing Rates Of Learning, Dakotah W. Hogan Mar 2020

An Analysis Of Learning Curve Theory & Diminishing Rates Of Learning, Dakotah W. Hogan

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional learning curve theory assumes a constant learning rate regardless of the number of units produced; however, a collection of theoretical and empirical evidence indicates that learning rates decrease as more units are produced in some cases. These diminishing learning rates cause traditional learning curves to underestimate required resources, potentially resulting in cost overruns. A diminishing learning rate model, Boones Learning Curve (2018), was recently developed to model this phenomenon. This research confirmed that Boones Learning Curve is more accurate in modeling observed learning curves using production data of 169 Department of Defense end-items. However, further empirical analysis revealed deficiencies …

Linear Regression Models Applied To Imperfect Information Spacecraft Pursuit-Evasion Differential Games, Dax Linville Mar 2020

Linear Regression Models Applied To Imperfect Information Spacecraft Pursuit-Evasion Differential Games, Dax Linville

Theses and Dissertations

Within satellite rendezvous and proximity operations lies pursuit-evasion differential games between two spacecraft. The extent of possible outcomes can be mathematically bounded by differential games where each player employs optimal strategies. A linear regression model is developed from a large data set of optimal control solutions. The model is shown to map pursuer relative starting positions to final capture positions and estimate capture time. The model is 3.8 times faster than the indirect heuristic method for arbitrary pursuer starting positions on an initial relative orbit about the evader. The linear regression model is shown to be well suited for on-board …

Simulation Of Sporadic-E Parameters Using Phase Screen Method, Daniel W. Stambovsky Mar 2020

Simulation Of Sporadic-E Parameters Using Phase Screen Method, Daniel W. Stambovsky

Theses and Dissertations

A phase screen simulation experiment is designed and implemented to model radio occultation through sporadic-E ionospheric disturbances between a GPS transmitter operating at the L1 frequency and a second receiving satellite in low earth orbit (LEO). Simulations were made to test the linear relationship between plasma intensity and scintillation S4 index both posited (Arras and Wickert, 2018) and contended (Gooch et al., 2020) in previous literature. Results brought into question both the linear relationship and the use of S4 as a whole and an alternate metric was sought.

The Design Of A Continuous Wave Molecular Nitrogen Stimulated Raman Laser In The Visible Spectrum, Timothy J. Bate Mar 2020

The Design Of A Continuous Wave Molecular Nitrogen Stimulated Raman Laser In The Visible Spectrum, Timothy J. Bate

Theses and Dissertations

Hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCFs) shows promise as a hybrid laser with higher nonlinear process limits and small beam size over long gain lengths. This work focuses on the design of a CW molecular nitrogen (N2) stimulated Raman laser. N2 offers Raman gains scaling up to 900 amg, scaling higher than H2. The cavity experiment showed the need to include Rayleigh scattering in the high pressure required for N2 Raman lasing. Even at relatively low pressure ssuch as 1,500 psi, high conversion percentages should be found if the fiber length is chosen based on …

Design, Development, And Testing Of A Low Cost, Additively-Manufactured, Centrifugal Compressor, Aaron P. Bauer

Theses and Dissertations

The three objectives of this research were to: 1.) design, build, and test AM compressors to substitute into COTS micro-gas turbine engines, 2.) provide initial correlations between FEA and compressor failure speed, and 3.) characterize the effects of AM on compressor performance. These goals improved the design cycle cost and the design-validation time cycle. ULTEM 9085, 300-AMB, and Onyx-Kevlar temperature-dependent tensile properties were measured. FEA-predicted failure speeds of stock compressor designs led design improvements, potentially fulfilling the original compressor requirements. Physical testing of the stock and ULTEM 9085 compressors occurred. Comparing these compressors' performances demonstrated that low cost, AM materials …

The Effects Of Funding Gaps On Depot Maintenance Hours, Carlo S. D'Amato Mar 2020

The Effects Of Funding Gaps On Depot Maintenance Hours, Carlo S. D'Amato

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between expenditures and readiness level is a topic of interest to military senior leaders, defense resource planners, and the American taxpayer alike. Senior leaders within the Air Force (AF) justify increased defense budgets by pointing to the potential adverse effects that decreased funding could have on military readiness. Resource planners within the AF are then tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that budgets are allocated most effectively to maximize the AF's ability to project airpower across a variety of contingency operations. This thesis investigates the relationship between budgets and readiness by examining the relationship between depot level funding …

Optimized Off-Grid Energy Systems Using Climate-Based Energy Demand For Soft-Walled Facilities, Jay F. Pearson

Theses and Dissertations

Remote contingency military operations often require the use of temporary facilities powered by inefficient diesel generators that are expensive to operate and maintain. Site planners can reduce operating costs by augmenting generators with hybrid energy systems, but they must select the optimal design configuration based on the region’s climate to meet the power demand at the lowest cost. To assist planners, this paper proposes two innovative, climate-optimized, hybrid energy system selection models. The first model is capable of selecting the facility insulation type, solar array size, and battery backup system to minimize the annual operating cost. The Hybrid Energy Renewable …

Analysis Of Beta Distribution For Subjective Uncertainty Analysis In Cost Models, Ryan D. Stafford Mar 2020

Analysis Of Beta Distribution For Subjective Uncertainty Analysis In Cost Models, Ryan D. Stafford

Theses and Dissertations

Subjective uncertainty exists within the realm of cost estimation. Typical methodology for subjective uncertainty involves elicitation from a subject matter expert to provide a high, low, and most likely value -- defining a triangular distribution -- to model said uncertainty. This manuscript explores ways to leverage research on elicitation geared towards defining a triangular distribution and provide a simple conversion to a beta distribution usable by cost analysts with various degrees of mathematical knowledge. Furthermore, this manuscript attempts to demonstrate the benefits of using a beta distribution through its application as a conjugate prior for Bayesian updating in cost models.

Characterizing Regime-Based Flow Uncertainty, John L. Fioretti Mar 2020

Characterizing Regime-Based Flow Uncertainty, John L. Fioretti

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this work is to develop a regime-based quantification of horizontal wind field uncertainty utilizing a global ensemble numerical weather prediction model. In this case, the Global Ensemble Forecast System Reforecast (GEFSR) data is utilized. Enhanced Brdf Modeling Using Directional Volume Scatter Terms, Michael W. Bishop Mar 2020

Enhanced Brdf Modeling Using Directional Volume Scatter Terms, Michael W. Bishop

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) models provide critical scatter behavior for computer graphics and remote sensing performance. The popular microfacet class of BRDF models is geometric-based and computationally inexpensive compared to wave-optics models. Microfacet models commonly account for surface scatter and Lambertian volume scatter, but not directional volume scatter. This work proposes directional volume scatter modeling for enhanced performance over all observation regions. Five directional volume models are incorporated into the modified Cook-Torrance microfacet model. Additionally, a semi-empirical directional volume term is presented based on the Beckmann microfacet distribution and a modified Fresnel reflection term. High fidelity, low density …

Heuristic Approaches For Near-Optimal Placement Of Gps-Based Multi-Static Radar Receivers In American Coastal Waters, Brandon J. Hufstetler

Theses and Dissertations

Narcotics smuggling across the Caribbean Sea is a growing concern for the United States Coast Guard. One vector for this illicit trafficking is via small aircraft. This thesis proposes a multi-static radar architecture using the Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation as a transmission source to detect these aircraft as they transit a detection fence. The system developed in this thesis relies on the forward-scatter phenomenon in which a radar shadow is cast by a target as it crosses in front of a transmitter, creating a measurable difference in the signal amplitude at the receiver. This thesis first develops a mathematical …

Improved Ground-Based Monocular Visual Odometry Estimation Using Inertially-Aided Convolutional Neural Networks, Josiah D. Watson

Theses and Dissertations

While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can estimate frame-to-frame (F2F) motion even with monocular images, additional inputs can improve Visual Odometry (VO) predictions. In this thesis, a FlowNetS-based [1] CNN architecture estimates VO using sequential images from the KITTI Odometry dataset [2]. For each of three output types (full six degrees of freedom (6-DoF), Cartesian translation, and transitional scale), a baseline network with only image pair input is compared with a nearly identical architecture that is also given an additional rotation estimate such as from an Inertial Navigation System (INS). The inertially-aided networks show an order of magnitude improvement over the …

Non-Linear Statistical Photocalibration Of Photodetectors Without Calibrated Light Sources, Stephen C. Cain Mar 2020

Non-Linear Statistical Photocalibration Of Photodetectors Without Calibrated Light Sources, Stephen C. Cain

Faculty Publications

Calibration of CCD arrays is commonly conducted using dark frames. Non-absolute calibration techniques only measure the relative response of the detectors. For absolute calibration to be achieved, a second calibration is sometimes utilized by looking at sources with known radiances. A process like this can be used to calibrate photodetectors if a calibration source is available and sensor time can be spared to perform the operation. A previous attempt at creating a procedure for calibrating a photodetector using the underlying Poisson nature of the photodetection statistics relied on a linear model. This effort produced the statistically applied non-uniformity calibration algorithm, …

Detection Of Reconnection Signatures In Solar Flares, Taylor R. Whitney Mar 2020

Detection Of Reconnection Signatures In Solar Flares, Taylor R. Whitney

Theses and Dissertations

Solar flare forecasting is limited by the current understanding of mechanisms that govern magnetic reconnection, the main physical phenomenon associated with these events. As a result, forecasting relies mainly on climatological correlations to historical events rather than the underlying physics principles. Solar physics models place the neutral point of the reconnection event in the solar corona. Correspondingly, studies of photospheric magnetic fields indicate changes during solar flares -- particularly in relation to the field helicity -- on the solar surface as a result of the associated magnetic reconnection. This study utilizes data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) Helioseismic and …

An Assessment Of The Spatial Variation Of Isotopic Ratios In A Candu-6 Reactor For Nuclear Treaty Monitoring, Aaron W. Burkhardt Mar 2020

An Assessment Of The Spatial Variation Of Isotopic Ratios In A Candu-6 Reactor For Nuclear Treaty Monitoring, Aaron W. Burkhardt

Theses and Dissertations

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization developed the International Monitoring System for monitoring for nuclear explosive testing and compliance with nuclear treaties. Many of the International Monitoring System stations are capable of detecting radionuclides that can be used to determine their origin and creation environment. However, there is not a single unique signature associated with each creation environment. Nuclear reactors, for example, can have a wide range of isotopic concentrations caused by spatial variations in neutron flux intensity and energy. As a single sample only provides a single isotopic measurement, this can make disambiguation difficult …
