Tackling Protein-Calorie Malnutrition During World Crises, Zahra Ali Padhani, Jai K. Das, Saeed Akhtar, Tariq Ismail, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Woman and Child Health

Undernutrition is still highly prevalent in developing countries and leads to a multitude of problems as it weakens the immune system, which leads to increased risk of infections and diet-related diseases. COVID-19 has worsened the existing situation and has resulted in unprecedented health, social, and economic disruptions across the world. Before COVID-19, about 54% children under 5 years were moderately or seriously malnourished, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, early estimates suggest that an additional 2.6 million children were stunted; 9.3 million were wasted, with an addition of 2.1 million maternal anemia cases; 168,000 child deaths; and USD 29.7 billion in …

Stroke: Are Women Worse Off?, Maria Khan Mar 2022

Stroke: Are Women Worse Off?, Maria Khan

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Although the age standardized rates of stroke have fallen, the absolute number of strokes continue to rise, particularly in the low and middle income countries. It was long recognized that women have a lower age-standardized incidence of stroke. This understanding has been challenged by the Global burden of Disease Study 2019 which highlights that although the total number of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) from stroke were higher in males compared to females, the number of incident and prevalent strokes were higher in females. In addition, the study did not …

Promoting Labour Migrant Health Equity Through Action On The Structural Determinants: A Systematic Review, Mireille Evagora-Campbell, Aysha Zahidie, Kent Buse, Fauziah Rabbani, Sarah Hawkes

Community Health Sciences

Background: Labour migrants, who represent over sixty per cent of international migrants globally, frequently have poorer health status than the population of host countries. These health inequities are determined in a large part by structural drivers including political, commercial, economic, normative and social factors, including living and working conditions. Achieving health equity for migrant workers requires structural-level interventions to address these determinants.
Methods: We undertook a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature designed to answer the question "what is the evidence for the effectiveness of interventions to address the structural determinants of health for labour migrants?" using the Ovid Medline electronic …
