Efficacy Of Statins In Preventing Microvascular Complications In Type 2 Diabetes- A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Hare Krishna, Prithpal Singh Matreja, Shehzeen Afaq, Vk Singh, Ajay Kumar
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background: Microvascular complications—diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy—remain major contributors to morbidity in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Statins, widely used for cardiovascular risk reduction, have been proposed to exert additional microvascular protective effects via pleiotropic mechanisms, though evidence remains inconsistent.
Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, including randomized controlled trials and observational studies evaluating statin efficacy in preventing microvascular complications. Data on demographics, biochemical parameters, and clinical outcomes were extracted. A random-effects model (RevMan 5.4.1) was used, with outcomes reported as odds ratios (OR) and mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI).

There is growing interest in automating business activities with Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) due to latter's seeming ease of use. Never has it been easier, or costlier, to do less with more. However, little is known about when agents are preferable to established alternatives such as local computation, Representational State Transfer (REST), the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), particularly when development speed, performance, and operational cost are considered. We investigate this question using a controlled mathematical task that compares seven methods on a benchmark of 1,000 arithmetic expressions where semantics of operator precedence has …

Beyond Cusp Count: Bicuspid Function In A Quadricuspid Aortic Valve, Aneeq Ahmed, Suhail Khan, Luigia D'Errico
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Quadricuspid aortic valve is a rare congenital anomaly usually associated with regurgitation. A young woman underwent surveillance after cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated four equal cusps in diastole but bicuspid-type systolic opening from fusion of the left and non-coronary cusps. By 2025, eccentric regurgitation was severe on echocardiography and moderate-to-severe on magnetic resonance imaging, with a regurgitant fraction of 31% and mild left ventricular dilatation. Increasing breathlessness and declining peak oxygen uptake prompted multidisciplinary review. Valve replacement with ascending aortic support was recommended, and she was considered suitable for a Ross procedure with personalised external aortic root support.

Pre-Participation Echocardiographic Clue To Anomalous Aortic Origin Of The Left Anterior Descending Artery In An Endurance Athlete, Asterios Deligiannis, Maria Anifanti, Evangelia Kouidi
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery may remain undetected during standard pre-participation cardiovascular screening. We report a 45-year-old asymptomatic marathon runner with normal physical examination and electrocardiogram. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a retroaortic tubular vascular structure with color flow, prompting coronary computed tomography angiography. Imaging demonstrated anomalous origin of the left anterior descending artery from the right sinus of Valsalva with an interarterial course and a coexisting retroaortic left circumflex artery. Functional and rhythm testing were reassuring. This case illustrates the potential incremental diagnostic value of echocardiography in selected athlete evaluations.

Complement protein C3 is crucial for immune responses in mucosal sites such as the lung, where it aids in microbe elimination, and enhances inflammation. While trained immunity - enhanced secondary responses of innate immune cells after prior exposure - is well-studied, the role of the complement system in trained immune responses remains unclear. We investigated the role of C3 in trained immunity and found that alveolar macrophage (AM)

Sickle cell disease (SCD) causes brain injury and cognitive disability. Systemic inflammation and endothelial injury are central to SCD pathophysiology, yet the relationship between systemic drivers of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and brain injury remains understudied. This cross-sectional study assessed whole-brain and regional BBB permeability (Ktrans) using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging for 37 adults with SCD in steady state and 37 adults without SCD. Cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and white matter mean diffusivity (MD) measured tissue hypoxia and microstructural injury, respectively. The SCD cohort showed elevated Ktrans compared with controls (3.6 × 10-4·min-1 vs 2.58 × 10-4·min-1; 95% …

RPL §231-c requires a GCEL notice to accompany any RPL §226-c termination notice — either annexed or folded into it. Landlord served the GCEL notice separately; the 90-day notice to quit went out without it. Court dismisses the petition on that unamendable defect. Court separately clarifies that, post-HSTPA, a notice of termination need not expire on the last day of the tenancy term. Dismissal is without prejudice.

Appellate Term 1st Dept affirms Housing Court decision denying tenant's motion to vacate a two-attorney stipulation of settlement. Tenant failed to meet the very high standard for vacatur of two-attorney stipulations and had benefitted from the stipulation. Tenant's argument that the apartment may have been unlawfully deregulated was held an insufficient basis to vacate, particularly where tenant offered no facts to challenge the high-rent vacancy deregulation.

Natural magnetite in Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) is attracting interest as a hydrothermal H2-generating medium and a potential caprock for subsurface hydrogen storage because of its low permeability. However, its wettability under reservoir conditions remains poorly understood. In this study, the wettability of natural and organically aged magnetite was evaluated using the tilted plate contact angle method at 1–100 bar and 25–65 °C with deionized water and 5 and 10 wt% NaCl brines as droplet fluids. The results showed that magnetite remained water-wet throughout the tested conditions. Higher pressure shifted the system toward less water-wet behaviour, whereas increasing temperature enhanced …

Organic Matter Redox Status Predicts Methane Production In Boreal Peatland Ecosystems, Jessica E. Rush, Jennifer C. Bowen, Jason K. Keller, Evan Kane, Eve Lyn S. Hinckley
Michigan Tech Publications
Boreal peatlands are important locations of carbon storage, but the mechanisms controlling methane (CH4) production in these ecosystems are not fully understood. Reduction of redox-active organic matter (RAOM) is one understudied mechanism where microbes use solid-phase (i.e., peat) organic matter as a terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration. RAOM reduction suppresses methanogenesis due to energetic favorability and is often considered as an explanation for why certain peatland ecosystems produce less CH4 than expected after accounting for other electron acceptors. Given the role of RAOM in regulating CH4 production, we compiled datasets from boreal peatlands in the USA that quantified RAOM …

Two-Stage Routing Of Power And Ground Nets In An Integrated Circuit Using Reinforcement Learning And Integer Linear Programming, Prateek Pendyala
Defensive Publications Series
Custom routing of power and ground nets in an integrated circuit remains a manual task, in that a layout engineer must balance irregular blockages, electromigration (EM) limits, and voltage drop (IR drop) budgets at the same time. To address these competing pressures, a two-stage routing method divides that work between a learned global search and an exact local refinement. In a first stage of the method, a reinforcement learning (RL) agent explores a coarse routing grid and proposes a trial route together with an approximate wire width for each segment. In a second stage of the method, an integer linear …

The Evolution Characteristics Of Gas Pressure Around Coal Seam Directional Long Extraction Boreholes With Nonlinear Extraction Negative Pressure, Zhang Qi, Jia Jinlong, Li Zhiguo, Zhang Longgang, Qin Zhengyuan, Zhang Weizhong, Li Jin
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Nonlinear pressure of coal seam gas in the directional borehole and surrounding areas affects extraction efficiency. A multi-field coupling numerical model, including gas desorption, diffusion, fracture seepage, and borehole extraction, is developed for the No. 3 coal seam of the GJH mine. Using the numerical simulation method of control variables, extraction was developed to investigate the nonlinear evolution of axial pressure gradients in directional long borehole and the spatiotemporal response characteristics of gas pressure. Results show that coal seam seepage pressure exhibits a nonlinear radial gradient attenuation around the borehole, evolving through rapid pressure change, stabilization, and slow adjustment. The …
