The Case Against The Five-Paragraph Essay, An Tran
The Case Against The Five-Paragraph Essay, An Tran
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
An Tran is a double major in finance and psychology from Boston, MA. An notes that she came from an “underfunded elementary school” where “the curriculum has been rooted in standardized tests, and preparing for them in order to bring in funding.” Given that, she argues that “our value, as students, has become less about the investment of an upcoming generation and more about how much money we could bring in from our test scores.” An notes that the five-paragraph essay “is a core component of this pattern, and it hinders students from truly learning the craft of writing.” She …

Neurodiverse Authority, Gavin Pereira Scoccia
Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Gavin Pereira Scoccia is a biology major and anthropology minor from Brookline, MA. While writing this essay Gavin says, “I was so upset at the education system for not giving me, or my neurodivergent peers, a chance.” Gavin shares that he was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age but “never got accommodations despite needing them, leading me to fail in school.” Gavin often believed that he was lazy, did not try hard, and was simply not good enough, and he believes that schools often let students down because they have preconceived notions about what makes a “good student.” He …

Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Lynn-sarah Georges is a business management major with a concentration in finance. She is Haitian-American and was raised in Medford, MA. Lynn-sarah says that this essay was important to her “because I had never felt like it was accepted or okay to write in my true voice in an academic setting. I feel passionate about ‘knowing who you are when you write’ because that feels like activism in the classroom.” As a student who speaks English, Haitian Creole, and French, it is important to her that she is “not only writing in my own voice but also being able to …

Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Maxine Freda is a computer science major from Plympton, MA. She states that this essay—a response to Kylie Medeiros’s Undercurrents essay from last year—”was a way for me to air my grievances with the rigidly structured way the school system teaches writing in high school.” Maxine notes that this is the first essay she ever wrote where she cared so strongly about the topic. She shares that this type of writing process was “far more enjoyable and resulted in something I could be proud of.” The freedom to write about “what I want in the way that I want” was …

Undercurrents: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Composition
Mahdi Almosawi is a computer science major from Hingham, MA. Mahdi says that “as a person with ADHD, education was a challenge for me at times, and I often used AI to create a learning process for me that worked. I believe that it can help others do the same.” Madhi believes that there is strong resistance to using AI in school because of the limited exposure we have had to it so far, and he “hopes that this essay takes away some of the stigma” associated with it. Mahdi loves to learn new things and hopes to inspire others …

Phosphoric Acid-Mediated Regeneration Of Sugarcane Bagasse Cellulose-Rich Fraction For Enzymatic Production Of Water-Soluble Cellulosic Oligomers, Chiou-Yeong Saw, David Agus Setiawan Wibisono, Tsung-Yen Wu, Yung Chang, Chi-Fai Chau
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
An integrated strategy was developed to promote conversion of a sugarcane bagasse cellulose-rich fraction into water-soluble cellulosic oligomers (WCOs) through phosphoric acid-mediated regeneration and enzymatic hydrolysis. Alkaline pretreatment on sugarcane bagasse powder increased glucan content from 57.6 to 93.4 g/100 g sample and lowered Klason lignin to 6.1 g/100 g sample. Phosphoric acid-mediated regeneration was subsequently capable of reorganizing the structure of cellulose from sugarcane bagasse, resulting in a decrease of crystallinity from 72.9 to 64.0% and introducing cellulose II-like features. The hydration state of regenerated cellulose strongly influenced hydrolysis performance, as the hydrated form showed significantly higher solubilization (810.4 …

When the stylus is removed, the magnetic interaction decreases, the restoring …
Dynamic Browser-Native Content Simplification And Contextual Injection Based On Historical Interaction And Localized Expertise Modeling, Abhay Prakash
Dynamic Browser-Native Content Simplification And Contextual Injection Based On Historical Interaction And Localized Expertise Modeling, Abhay Prakash
Defensive Publications Series
Browser-native content adaptation modifies web-page content represented in a Document Object Model (DOM) based on contextual information indicating a user’s familiarity with the subject matter of the content. A user expertise profile is generated from historical interaction data including browser history, searches, pages read, semantic exposure, frequency of encounters, dwell time, and viewport activity. Before or during rendering of a target page, terms, acronyms, sentences, images, and other content are evaluated against the profile and/or page context. Content determined to be unfamiliar to the user is adaptively modified by, for example, expanding acronyms, adding contextual explanations, simplifying language, or injecting …

In-Situ Metrological Reporting And Asset-Embedded Quality Annotation, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
A surface-inspection system is described that acquires position-referenced measurements as it moves across a target surface, calculates local quality information while the measurements are acquired, and deposits localized markings at the corresponding physical positions. A controller combines coordinate and measurement data to maintain a surface map, applies selected acceptance criteria to local regions of that map, and generates marking instructions for a printer or other marking assembly. The markings may include numeric values, pass or fail symbols, contour lines, corrective-action regions, or machine-readable codes that identify the local data. The result is a persistent, surface-anchored quality record that can be …
Why Ai-Generated Stems Can't Reach 6 Lu, And What Unflatten Does About It, Hector Santiago
Why Ai-Generated Stems Can't Reach 6 Lu, And What Unflatten Does About It, Hector Santiago
Defensive Publications Series
Mixes built from printed stems (AI-generated, source-separated, or pre-compressed bounces) measure a loudness range (EBU Tech 3342 LRA) of about 4 LU and cannot be brought into a 6–12 LU window by balance changes or section automation, because their range is uniform inside every 3-second window. This disclosure describes a pre-mastering stage that applies slow macro-dynamic expansion to the whole mix — K-weighted 3-second short-term loudness, a fixed user-selected ratio (1.5 / 1.8 / 2.2), a pivot equal to the mix's whole-song BS.1770 integrated loudness measured once, a ±4 dB clamp and a 1-second glide — offered automatically when a …

A Cognitive Accessibility Framework For Mitigating Resumption Lag Using Transitional Context Lobbies, Rachit Mathur, Payal Shah
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure presents a cognitive accessibility framework designed to mitigate "resumption lag" and severe cognitive friction during task resumption in modern software ecosystems. While existing operating systems and web browsers facilitate context-switching away from tasks, they universally lack a mechanism to re-onboard users when they switch back, forcing users to manually reconstruct their working memory. To address this accessibility barrier, we introduce Transitional Context Lobbies—an additional strategic UI layer that re-orients users returning to suspended workspaces. The primary inventive step is a client-side engine utilizing Teleological Intent Parsing to translate a user's past behaviors, interactions, and browsing data into a …
