Human–wildlife conservation requires understanding both ecological processes and human behavior. In this talk, I discuss work from my PhD, Social Ecological Practice Theory, and demonstrate its application through two applied case studies: human–carnivore interactions in Botswana and my current work as Director of the University of California, Berkeley’s California Wolf Project. Together, these examples illustrate how integrating social and ecological perspectives can inform more effective and durable conservation strategies.

Enviromental Burden And Financial Performance Of Manufacturing Companies On Borsa Istanbul: An Exploratory Circular-Economy-Aligned Assessment Using The Aroman Method, Sibel Fettahoglu, Ejder Ayçin, Büşra Karslı Günay

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Türkiye's 2053 net-zero emissions target and the critical role of the manufacturing sector in this process necessitate an urgent examination of the financial impacts of circular economy (CE) practices. This study provides an exploratory analysis of the relationship between environmental burden and financial performance using 2023 data from 26 manufacturing companies in Borsa Istanbul. Given the difficulty of measuring holistic circularity at the company level, this study operationalizes the environmental dimension of circular economy performance using selected environmental burden indicators, including energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation. The study uses the alternative ranking order method accounting …

Legal Shifts And Judicial Inconsistencies In Strict Liability After The Omnibus Law: A Critical Analysis Of Indonesian Environmental Law For Responsible Mining And Esg Compliance, Nurul Listiyani, Khenza Atthaya Namira Yulianto

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

The legal significance of strict liability in mining arises from the sector’s capacity to generate technically complex, diffuse, and long-latency environmental harm that is difficult to address through fault-based litigation alone. This study aims to evaluate how the post-Omnibus Law reformulation of Article 88 of Law No. 32 of 2009 has affected the doctrinal autonomy, judicial consistency, and practical enforcement of strict liability in Indonesian environmental law. The research used normative doctrinal legal research including statutory, case-law, conceptual, comparative, and evaluative analyses. The data cover the 2009–2025 period and consist of two core statutory formulations of Article 88, the Job …

Creativity In A Digital World, Rafael Conde Melguizo, Jessica Blanco Marcos

Libros

Painless Leg Weakness Revealing A Falcine Meningioma In The Postpartum Period, Brent A. Spiteri, John Capodilupo, David Spiteri Sep 2026

Painless Leg Weakness Revealing A Falcine Meningioma In The Postpartum Period, Brent A. Spiteri, John Capodilupo, David Spiteri

Student Publications

Low back pain is among the leading causes of disability worldwide and is common in pregnancy, which can lead a clinician to a musculoskeletal diagnosis. We describe a 41-year-old postpartum woman who presented to an outpatient office with mechanical low back pain and painless weakness of the left lower extremity that had caused three falls. A thorough history established that the weakness was non-radicular and unaccompanied by sensory loss, and the neurologic examination localized the deficit to the upper motor neuron rather than to a lumbar root or peripheral nerve. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a large extra-axial …

How Far Do A Smile And A Hand Held Tight Reach? Children’S Play As A Transdisciplinary Predictor Of The Trajectory Of Physicochemical Processes On Atomic, Molecular And Cellular Scales, Evangelina Wu Uskoković, Theo Wu Uskoković, Vuk Uskoković Sep 2026

How Far Do A Smile And A Hand Held Tight Reach? Children’S Play As A Transdisciplinary Predictor Of The Trajectory Of Physicochemical Processes On Atomic, Molecular And Cellular Scales, Evangelina Wu Uskoković, Theo Wu Uskoković, Vuk Uskoković

Administration and Staff Articles and Research

The search for an intrinsically beautiful scientific project took two children and their parent to over 600 visits of 181 playgrounds scattered throughout northern, central and southern California over the period of more than three years. Their goal was to test the hypothesis that children’s happiness and fondness for communication at playgrounds could be used, through complexity and entropy as intermediary quantities, as predictors of the evolution of physical, chemical and biological phenomena on microscopic scales ranging from the atomic to the cellular. Specifically, a link was sought between the children’s responses at play and the reaction paths of physicochemical …

Scaling Nursing Immersive Virtual Reality Simulation: Multisite Outcomes And Lessons Learned, Cynthia Bradley, Carol Flaten Sep 2026

Scaling Nursing Immersive Virtual Reality Simulation: Multisite Outcomes And Lessons Learned, Cynthia Bradley, Carol Flaten

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Immersive virtual reality (IVR) is shifting from an educational novelty to an essential strategy for preparing practice ready nurses. While programs increasingly adopt IVR to provide consistent clinical learning, there is limited guidance on how IVR impacts knowledge and clinical competence when scaled across multiple sites. By giving every student standardized complex scenarios, IVR supports competency based assessment while expanding simulation access for programs with limited infrastructure.

Purpose: Describe outcomes from implementing a competency based IVR sequence across six prelicensure nursing programs and a nurse residency, with emphasis on what supported successful replication.

Methods: Six nursing programs in large …

Leadership Starts Here: Bridging The Learning-To-Practice Gap With Competency-Based Education, Jihane Frangieh, Dorna P. Hairston Sep 2026

Leadership Starts Here: Bridging The Learning-To-Practice Gap With Competency-Based Education, Jihane Frangieh, Dorna P. Hairston

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The purpose of this presentation is to describe how competency-based education (CBE) can be used to intentionally integrate leadership development into entry-level professional nursing education. Competencies are observable, measurable behaviors that reflect not only what students know, but how they apply knowledge and judgment in practice. When leadership competencies are embedded across the curriculum rather than treated as “add-ons,” new graduates are better prepared to meet the realities of contemporary practice.

Building on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials, this work frames leadership as an expected entry-level competency rather than a skill to be developed only after …

The Impact Of Telemedicine On Pediatric Specialty Patients’ Access To Care, Barbara R. Medvec, Tamara L. Hill, John D. Knight Sep 2026

The Impact Of Telemedicine On Pediatric Specialty Patients’ Access To Care, Barbara R. Medvec, Tamara L. Hill, John D. Knight

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Pediatric patient no-shows to specialty clinic appointments are a problem, with no-show rates as high as 50%. The limited number of pediatric specialty providers leads to longer lead times when rescheduling, further delaying care. One often cited no-show factor is inconvenient appointment access. COVID-19 offered telemedicine as an additional patient access method. In this study, we compared no-show rates before the COVID-19 pandemic with no-show rates during the pandemic and in the post-pandemic period to evaluate (1) the impact of telemedicine patient access on the overall no-show rate for pediatric ambulatory clinic visits and (2) the telemedicine no-show rate compared …

“Whenever You Are Using Media, You Should Always Have A Purpose”: A Study Of Chinese Immigrant Mothers’ Media Practices, Xiaoning Gui, Daniel G. Krutka Sep 2026

“Whenever You Are Using Media, You Should Always Have A Purpose”: A Study Of Chinese Immigrant Mothers’ Media Practices, Xiaoning Gui, Daniel G. Krutka

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

This qualitative study explores how eleven Mandarin-speaking Chinese immigrant mothers of young children in a southwestern U.S. city navigate and mediate media in their households. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Findings show mothers balance media’s educational affordances with concerns about health and age-appropriate content, employing gatekeeping, time limits, and purposeful sharing. Mothers described children as learners, co-learners, and cultural connectors, sometimes reversing mediation by teaching mothers about U.S. media norms. Interpreted through a lens of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy while also drawing on Confucian concepts, results underscore the need for early childhood educators to honor immigrant families’ practices while fostering …

Journal of Health Research

Background: Sleep disturbances impact cognition and physiology. While individual essential oils are documented, a gap remains in how multi-component blends can target multiple pathways. This study evaluated a blended essential oil (BEO) systematically guided by Thai Traditional medicine (TTM) principles to balance the "Wind" element (Tard Lom) alongside modern neurobiological validation.

Methods: A one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted in adults (aged ≥ 20 years, n = 38) with sleep disturbances (PSQI > 5). The BEO formulation consisting of orange (2.5% w/w), lavender (1.0% w/w), ylang-ylang (1.5% w/w), geranium (0.5% w/w), cedarwood (2.0% w/w), and rosewood (2.0% w/w) in 95% ethanol …

The Role Of Family Problem-Solving And Neighborhood Social Cohesion On Child Socioemotional Learning Among Families With Low-Income, Nazaret C. Suazo, Alanah C. Claybaugh, Deborah J. Jones Sep 2026

The Role Of Family Problem-Solving And Neighborhood Social Cohesion On Child Socioemotional Learning Among Families With Low-Income, Nazaret C. Suazo, Alanah C. Claybaugh, Deborah J. Jones

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Socioemotional learning (SEL) is linked to a broad range of child outcomes, with income playing an important role in child SEL, yet most work has compared high- and low-income children yielding less understanding of variability in risk and protective factors within low-income families and communities. Building upon theories in the positive youth development literature and public health frameworks exploring social determinants of health, this study explored the role of family problem-solving, neighborhood social cohesion, and neighborhood resources in understanding child SEL within 1097 low-income families of 3- to 5-year-old children who participated in the National Survey of Children’s Health. Using …

Industry Implications Of A Scaffolded Hospitality Co-Op, Juan Mendez, Joel Reynolds Sep 2026

Industry Implications Of A Scaffolded Hospitality Co-Op, Juan Mendez, Joel Reynolds

ICHRIE Research Reports

The hospitality industry faces a persistent skills gap as graduates enter the workforce with limited preparation in the adaptive, operational, and AI-enabled competencies modern employers require (Jackson, 2013; Sigala, 2018). Cooperative education offers a structured response, yet many programs default to a single internship that leaves the integration of theory and practice to chance. This report presents an undergraduate scaffolded cooperative education framework developed at a U.S. hospitality business school that sequences two foundation courses, six concurrent work-integrated courses, and a capstone digital portfolio across a two-year arc. The framework is grounded in experiential learning and scaffolding theory (Kolb, 1984; …

Examining The Effect Of Having A Disability On The College Experience, Grace Dudley Sep 2026

Examining The Effect Of Having A Disability On The College Experience, Grace Dudley

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Among people 25 or older in the United States in 2022, just 21% of individuals with a disability had earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, while 38% of individuals without a disability had earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. Previous research has identified a variety of barriers that students with disabilities may face as they pursue postsecondary education. The purpose of this study was to examine barriers students with disabilities (SWDs) face once they arrive at college in order to investigate how higher education may be made more accessible. Barriers were assessed by surveying SWDs attending James Madison University, a …

Temporal Variation In Picophytoplankton Pigment Phenotypes Of Two Urban Rivers, Kylee M. Lamberson, Camille E. Wendlandt, Kristin E. Forgrave, Anne W. Thompson Sep 2026

Temporal Variation In Picophytoplankton Pigment Phenotypes Of Two Urban Rivers, Kylee M. Lamberson, Camille E. Wendlandt, Kristin E. Forgrave, Anne W. Thompson

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Picophytoplankton are a group of photosynthetic, unicellular organisms, making them key primary producers in aquatic ecosystems. These cells numerically dominate in oceans and lakes where picophytoplankton communities contain phenotypic subpopulations that correspond to biogeographic patterns. In rivers, however, such community dynamics are less studied. We examined the phenotypic subpopulations of picophytoplankton in two converging urban river environments of Portland, Oregon (USA): the Columbia and the Willamette Rivers. From September 2022 through July 2023, we took roughly bi-weekly surface water samples and used multi-laser flow cytometry to distinguish between photosynthetic cells based on their size and pigment fluorescence. We discovered seven …

Portraits In Leadership: Six College Presidents Reflect On The Contemporary Presidency, Chris Thomas

Journal of Research on the College President

This qualitative study examines how six college and university presidents describe the contemporary presidency in their own words, offering a personal complement to existing research that often emphasizes governance, organizational structures, or survey data. Through in‑depth interviews conducted in 2025, presidents from community colleges, regional public universities, and a private liberal arts college reflected on their transitions into the role, leadership philosophies, institutional challenges, and the legacies they hope to leave. Their experiences reveal strikingly consistent themes across institutional types. Participants emphasized that “nothing fully prepares someone for becoming the president,” noting the profound shift in responsibility that accompanies the …

Adapting To Change: A Mixed Methods Approach To Understand How Colleges And Universities Are Utilizing Animals To Help Students Transition Into Higher Education, Christopher Puglisi, Shalini Mathew, Nicole D. Schutter, Monte Meyerink, Abiah George Sep 2026

Adapting To Change: A Mixed Methods Approach To Understand How Colleges And Universities Are Utilizing Animals To Help Students Transition Into Higher Education, Christopher Puglisi, Shalini Mathew, Nicole D. Schutter, Monte Meyerink, Abiah George

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Individuals experience several changes in their lives, with one of the most impactful being leaving home to attend college. It is no surprise that college-age students need mental health support, especially in times of adjustment. To address this adjustment, animal-assisted interventions (AAI) have recently gained substantial attention. In this study, college and university departments that help students transition to higher education were surveyed (N = 59) and interviewed (N = 6) to understand how AAI are utilized. Results indicate that AAI have potential to ease students’ higher education transition, though institutions must establish an outline that states the benefits of …

Shrinkage Of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, Richard W. Schmude Jr. Sep 2026

Shrinkage Of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, Richard W. Schmude Jr.

Georgia Journal of Science

This report summarizes changes in Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) on the multi-decade time scale.  The mean shrinkage rates for 1960-2016 are 0.21 degrees/year (east-west) and 0.52 degrees/year (north-south).  The east-west shrinkage rate is much higher than the corresponding value for Oval BA.  Between 1878 and 2026, the GRS area shrunk by over a factor of four with a mean annual shrinkage rate of 1.0 %.  The GRS quotient (east-west length in degrees longitude divided by north-south length in degrees latitude) has decreased.  This is consistent with the GRS becoming more circular with time.  This is different than Oval BA, …
