Federated Learning Framework Integrating Refined Cnn And Deep Regression Forests, Daniel Nolte, Omid Bazgir, Souparno Ghosh, Ranadip Pal

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Predictive learning from medical data incurs additional challenge due to concerns over privacy and security of personal data. Federated learning, intentionally structured to preserve high level of privacy, is emerging to be an attractive way to generate cross-silo predictions in medical scenarios. However, the impact of severe population-level heterogeneity on federated learners is not well explored. In this article, we propose a methodology to detect presence of population heterogeneity in federated settings and propose a solution to handle such heterogeneity by developing a federated version of Deep Regression Forests. Additionally, we demonstrate that the recently conceptualized REpresentation of Features as …

Management Options For Linear Immunoglobulin A (Iga) Bullous Dermatosis: A Literature Review., Madiha Khan, Lily Park, Stanley Skopit

HPD Articles

Linear immunoglobulin A (IgA) bullous dermatosis (LABD) is an autoimmune condition with various triggers. Because of the lack of randomized controlled trials on LABD treatment, management options are mostly anecdotal. This paper provides a comprehensive review of treatment options from a literature review of reported treatments to arm clinicians with a guideline for the management of LABD in both pediatric and adult patients as well as those recalcitrant to first-line therapy (dapsone and steroids). We additionally illustrate an algorithm to use for the management of LABD to aid clinicians when faced with unique patient circumstances.

Acute Traumatic Spondyloptosis: A Case Report., Johann Braithwaite, Joshua Gruber, Jordan Fakhoury, Gus Katsigiorigis, Kanwarpaul Grewal

HPD Articles

Acute traumatic spondyloptosis (ATS) is a rare condition in the orthopedic literature, with few cases reported. We present a case of ATS in a 35-year-old Hispanic male with multilevel injury, without neurological deficits at the time of injury. The patient was treated in a two-stage method consisting of combined anterior and posterior spinal decompression and fusion. At the six-month follow-up, the patient had no motor/sensory deficits, he remained stable during the one-year period. Conclusion: ATS is rarely seen in patients without neurological deficits on presentation. Although surgical intervention presents significant risks of iatrogenic neurologic compromise, surgical fixation is warranted.

What Is The Effect Of Opioid Use During Pregnancy On Infant Health And Wellbeing At Birth?, Jessica Pac, Christine Durrance, Lawrence Berger, Deborah Ehrenthal

Population Health Research Brief Series

The opioid epidemic has severe consequences for pregnant women and their infants. Opioid use during pregnancy increases the risk of numerous poor outcomes at birth, including Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), preterm birth, and low birth weight. Opioid use during pregnancy can also lead to child protective services reports and foster care entry. This brief summarizes the findings from a recent study that used linked administrative data from Wisconsin from 2010-2019 and child protective service reports to evaluate the effects of exposure to prescription and illicit opioids during pregnancy on infant health and wellbeing at birth.

The Opioid Epidemic Has Disrupted Children’S Living Arrangements, Mónica L. Caudillo, Andres Villarreal, Philip N. Cohen

Population Health Research Brief Series

The contemporary drug overdose crisis has had profound impacts on children and families in the United States. This brief summarizes how children’s living arrangements have changed during the opioid epidemic. The authors find that opioid overdose deaths are associated with decreasing shares of children living with two married parents and increases in shares of children living with unmarried but cohabiting parents, single fathers, and adults other than their parents. These changes have been most pronounced among White children.

Is Information Provided Within Chronic Subdural Haematoma Education Resources Adequate? A Scoping Review, Conor S. Gillespie, Samuel Khanna, Mark E. Vivian, Samuel Mckoy, Touzet A Yanez, Ellie Edlmann, Daniel J. Stubbs, Benjamin M. Davies

Peninsula Medical School

Background Chronic subdural haematoma (CSDH) is becoming increasingly prevalent, due to an aging population with increasing risk factors. Due to its variable disease course and high morbidity, patient centred care and shared decision making are essential. However, its occurrence in frail populations, remote from specialist neurosurgeons who currently triage treatment decisions, challenges this. Education is an important component of enabling shared decisions. This should be targeted to avoid information overload. However, it is unknown what this should be. Objectives Our objectives were to conduct analysis of the content of existing CSDH educational materials, to inform the development of patient and …

Counties With Higher Prescription Opioid Presence Have Slower Student Learning Rates, Jessica Drescher, Carrie Townley-Flores Mar 2023

Counties With Higher Prescription Opioid Presence Have Slower Student Learning Rates, Jessica Drescher, Carrie Townley-Flores

Population Health Research Brief Series

The adverse impacts of the U.S. opioid crisis have been documented in many domains, but surprisingly little attention has been directed to understanding how the opioid crisis has affected children’s educational outcomes. This brief shows that students in counties with high levels of opioid prescribing are learning more slowly over time than their peers in counties with low levels of opioid prescribing. In addition to directing more support to schools, the authors advocate for policies that address the underlying social conditions that lead to prescription opioid misuse.

The Role Of Military Chaplains And Effective Spiritual Care For Strengthening Military Marriages During Deployments, Carl Michael Johnson Mar 2023

The Role Of Military Chaplains And Effective Spiritual Care For Strengthening Military Marriages During Deployments, Carl Michael Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Military chaplains provide spiritual support and counseling to the military populations alongside conducting religious services. As a military process, chaplaincy operates as a liaison between military personnel, mental health professionals, and clinical marriage counselors. In this context, the military population is extensive and consists of military personnel, military chaplains, and their civilian families. It must be acknowledged that various service-motivated challenges confront these individuals. For instance, military marriages are threatened by lengthy deployment and family separations. Therefore, it is significant to contextualize military marriages’ coping, survival, and strengthening as most contemporary researchers have focused on this subject. Most studies have …

Trauma-Informed And Family-Centered Paediatric Resuscitation: Defining Domains And Practices, Nancy Kassam-Adams, Lucas Butler, Julia Price, Marcie Gawel, Leila Graham, Sage Myers, Marc Auerbach

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Aim

For paediatric patients and families, resuscitation can be an extremely stressful experience with significant medical and psychological consequences. Psychological sequelae may be reduced when healthcare teams apply patient- and family-centered care and trauma-informed care, yet there are few specific instructions for effective family-centered or trauma-informed behaviours that are observable and teachable. We aimed to develop a framework and tools to address this gap.

Methods

We reviewed relevant policy statements, guidelines, and research to define core domains of family-centered and trauma-informed care, and identified observable evidence-based practices in each domain. We refined this list of practices via review of provider/team …

Ultra-Trace Analysis Of Fallout Plutonium Isotopes In Soil: Emerging Trends And Future Perspectives, Sophia M. Dowell, Olivier S. Humphrey, William H. Blake, Odipo Osano, Simon Chenery, Michael J. Watts

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The measurement of isotopic abundances and ratio variations of plutonium can provide important information about the sources and behaviours of radiogenic isotopes in the environment. The detection of ultra-trace isotopes of plutonium is increasing interest in the scientific literature for the determination of soil erosion rates due to their long retention times in the environment. The characteristics of plutonium within the environment make it an ideal tracer for the determination of soil redistribution rates and its robustness presents the opportunity to replace more commonly used radioisotopes such as 137Cesium and 210Lead. However, ultra-trace analysis of plutonium (fg g−1) presents analytical …

Cellular Heterogeneity And Stem Cells Of Vascular Endothelial Cells In Blood Vessel Formation And Homeostasis: Insights From Single-Cell Rna Sequencing, Taku Wakabayashi, Hisamichi Naito

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) that constitute the inner surface of blood vessels are essential for new vessel formation and organ homeostasis. ECs display remarkable phenotypic heterogeneity across different organs and the vascular tree during angiogenesis and homeostasis. Recent advances in single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies have allowed a new understanding of EC heterogeneity in both mice and humans. In particular, scRNA-seq has identified new molecular signatures for arterial, venous and capillary ECs in different organs, as well as previously unrecognized specialized EC subtypes, such as the aerocytes localized in the alveolar capillaries of the lung. scRNA-seq has also revealed …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The increasing miniaturization of electronics requires a better understanding of material properties at the nanoscale. Many studies have shown that there is a ferroelectric size limit in oxides, below which the ferroelectricity will be strongly suppressed due to the depolarization field, and whether such a limit still exists in the absence of the depolarization field remains unclear. Here, by applying uniaxial strain, we obtain pure in-plane polarized ferroelectricity in ultrathin SrTiO3 membranes, providing a clean system with high tunability to explore ferroelectric size effects especially the thickness-dependent ferroelectric instability with no depolarization field. Surprisingly, the domain size, ferroelectric transition …

Neural Mechanisms Of Language Development In Infancy, Scott Huberty, Christian O'Reilly, Virginia Carter Leno, Mandy Steiman, Sara J. Webb, Mayada Elsabbagh, The Basis Team

Publications

Understanding the neural processes underpinning individual differences in early language development is of increasing interest, as it is known to vary in typical development and to be quite heterogeneous in neurodevelopmental conditions. However, few studies to date have tested whether early brain measures are indicative of the developmental trajectory of language, as opposed to language outcomes at specific ages. We combined recordings from two longitudinal studies, including typically developing infants without a family history of autism, and infants with increased likelihood of developing autism (infant-siblings) (N = 191). Electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorded at 6 months, and behavioral assessments at …
