Theoretical Studies Of Swirling Flow Rates For A Confuser Section Of High-Pressure Vortex Mine Spillways, A. A. Yangiev, D. S. Adzhimuratov, P Kovar
Irrigation and Melioration
The advantages of using a confuser section in the outlet part of the vortex spill wayare shown in the paper; they may be more rational in terms of ensuring cavitation-free operation of the flow swirler. An analytical method for calculating the aerated swirling flow in the confuser section of the vortex spillway is presented, as well as its correspondence to experimental results, which allow us to quickly and accurately conduct the distribution analysis of axial and tangential rates in the swirling flow along the length of the confuser at different taper angles.

Increase Of The Effeciency And Rational Use Of Electrical Energy And Electrical Equipment, A. J. Isakov, D. V. Ochilov, N. E. Kadbin
Irrigation and Melioration
This article discusses and reveals the problems of the need for proper use of electricity and electrical installations to improve efficiency. Information on the structure of installed capacity at power plants, the structure of fuel consumption and the consumption of electricity by consumers are reviewed and given; as well as information about the increase in efficiency and causes of failure in operation. Agro-industrial complex consumes about 30 percent of all electricity produced in the country (including the rural population), including pumping stations. This figure is expected to reach 45-50% over the next few years. Thus, the choice, design, installation, maintenance …

Research has shown that tobacco users have an increased risk of collisions compared to nonsmokers. Studies from 1967 through 2013 documented a crude relative risk of collision involvement of about 1.5 among smokers compared to nonsmokers. In January 2009, in response to concerns about the health risks associated with potentially high concentrations of secondhand smoke resulting from smoking in vehicles, the provincial government in Ontario, Canada, introduced legislation restricting smoking in vehicles where children and adolescents are present. We examined the association between reported smoking and involvement in a motor vehicle collision in a large representative sample of adult drivers …

Isn’t this a lovely place to pick apart your lover’s face
Some say the river bank’s a sacred place
Others think that’s such a silly thing to say
But I would never try to prove them wrong on such a blissful day
The colors of the leaves will soon have changed
The yellows and the greens will fade to gray
But I will lose a quiet hour to the darkest day
A pagan winter’s on its way
I will see the death of God before it’s Christmas day
A pagan winter’s on its way
Well isn’t this some lovely clay …

Hypotrigona species are difficult to identify morphologically. Here, we show that nest sites and nest architecture can be used to discriminate three Hypotrigona species found in Kenya. Hypotrigona gribodoi, H. araujoi and H. ruspolii colonies from Kakamega forest and H. gribodoi from Mwingi, were collected and placed in a meliponiary at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE). The following parameters were recorded: nest sites, internal nest entrances, external nest entrance colour and size, sizes (in terms of volume) of brood cells, honey and pollen pots, arrangement of brood cells and presence or absence of involucrum (cerumen covering …

Farmers may not want certain natural enemies of insect pests to be present in their fields all year round, due to the detrimental effects they might have on themselves or on their crop. We explored the potential for manipulating the behavior of the African weaver ant, Oecophylla longinoda, which may bite humans while being a major natural enemy against the invasive fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, in Africa. Our aim was to find repellents that might help to protect farmers when working in the fields, while also coming up with ways of increasing weaver ant populations, by finding carbohydrate sources from …

Driver Distraction Identification With An Ensemble Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Hesham M. Eraqi, Mohamed Nabil Moustafa
Faculty Journal Articles
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 1.25 million deaths yearly due to road traffic accidents worldwide and the number has been continuously increasing over the last few years. Nearly fifth of these accidents are caused by distracted drivers. Existing work of distracted driver detection is concerned with a small set of distractions (mostly, cell phone usage). Unreliable ad hoc methods are often used. In this paper, we present the first publicly available dataset for driver distraction identification with more distraction postures than existing alternatives. In addition, we propose a reliable deep learning-based solution that achieves a 90% accuracy. The system …

A Study Of The Effects Of Certificate Of Need Law On Inpatient Occupancy Rates, Jomon A. Paul, Huan Ni, Aniruddha Bagchi
Economics, Finance & Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Increasing healthcare costs and the deterioration of healthcare quality have always been major concerns to policy makers in the United States, and Certificate of Need (CON) law has been implemented as one way to curb wasteful healthcare resource use. From a theoretical standpoint, CON can lead to a reduction in the number of beds as well as in the number of inpatient days (possibly by shortening the length of patient stay). However, these two effects impact inpatient occupancy rate in opposite directions. We test empirically to find out which of these two effects dominate. In this study, we investigate the …

This paper looks at Anthony Bourdain's production on screen as a cosmopolitan host and as a particular gastro-geographical narrative. With three different episodes of Parts Unknown (CNN), I investigate how Bourdain allows us to question gender roles, development discourse, and the American image through the traces of food, while at the same time being limited in his role as the cosmopolitan.

Background: Insects frequently live in close relationship with symbiotic bacteria that carry out beneficial functions for their host, like protection against parasites and viruses. However, in some cases, the mutualistic nature of such associations is put into question because of detrimental phenotypes caused by the symbiont. One example is the association between the vertically transmitted facultative endosymbiont Spiroplasma poulsonii and its natural host Drosophila melanogaster. Whereas S. Poulsonii protects its host against parasitoid wasps and nematodes by the action of toxins from the family of Ribosome Inactivating Proteins (RIPs), the presence of S. Poulsonii has been reported to reduce hosts …
