Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
The objective of this study was to characterize the oral microbiome (bacteria) and the oral mycobiome (fungi) as caries disease progresses, using site-specific sampling of teeth with different caries disease-states: caries free (PF), early-stage caries (caries in enamel tooth layer; PE), and advanced-stage caries (caries in dentin tooth layer; PD). Dental plaque samples were collected from 46 children (n=84). One plaque sample per caries disease state was collected from each patient (maximum of 3 samples per patient). To determine the changes in the oral microbiome/mycobiome amplicons of the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and the fungal ITS1 …

Applied Psychology Department Faculty Journal Articles
Before she even knew what was happening, he was already on her. He punched her in the face, smashed her head against the wall, and dragged her through the corridor by her hair. The pain was searing; the fear, overwhelming. When help finally arrived, after what seemed like an eternity, the damage had already been done. The effects of the beating were both physical and psychological. The onset of trauma, at first muted by shock, would soon unfold in ways unimaginable to her. Her illusion of safety was shattered. This was her job. She was this person’s caretaker, an authority …

Comparative Study Of Encapsulated Peppermint And Green Tea Essential Oils In Chitosan Nanoparticles: Encapsulation, Thermal Stability, In-Vitro Release, Antioxidant And Antibacterial Activities, Amro Shetta, James Kegere, Wael Mamdouh Sayed Ahmed
Faculty Journal Articles
Essential oils (EOs) such as Peppermint oil (PO) and Green Tea oil (GTO) have extensively been reported for their nutritional and biomedical properties. To overcome the sensitivity of EOs to the environmental conditions, nano-encapsulation has emerged as a method to address this limitation. In this work, PO and GTO were encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) following emulsification/ionic gelation method. The nano-encapsulated PO (CS/PO NPs) and GTO (CS/GTO NPs) were fully characterized by various methods. Spherical NPs with an average size range of 20–60 nm were revealed by TEM for both systems. The loading capacity reached 22.2% and 23.1%, for …

We describe a novel virus, designated Ntepes virus (NPV), isolated from sand flies in Kenya. NPV has the characteristic phlebovirus trisegmented genome architecture and is related to, but distinct from, Gabek Forest phlebovirus. Diverse cell cultures derived from wildlife, livestock, and humans were susceptible to NPV, with pronounced permissiveness in swine and rodent cells. NPV infection of newborn mice caused rapid and fatal illness. Permissiveness for NPV replication in sand fly cells, but not mosquito cells, suggests a vector-specific adaptation. Specific neutralizing antibodies were found in 13.9% (26/187) of human serum samples taken at the site of isolation of NPV …

These benches were designed for Zane Middle School in order to make the front of the school more welcoming and give students a place to sit to wait for their parents to pick them up. Previously, the desolate squares near the parking lot were full of wood chips being tracked all over campus and creating a mess. Our team, Sunset Society, designed these benches with reused materials in order to promote sustainability and create a fun look that would entice students to use the seating.

The purpose of this Spring 2019 ENGR 215 project is to build a desk with an attached pedal system for our client, Zane Middle School. Since middle school students have tons of energy and sit in a classroom most of the day, pedaling while working on assignments allows them to quietly get their jitters out will getting work done. Our client representative, middle school teacher Paige Boone, had this problem and gave us the task to build a desk with pedal system to help improve her student's ability to work in the classroom.
Zane Middle School Alternative Desk, Timmy James, Alyssa Regan
Zane Middle School Alternative Desk, Timmy James, Alyssa Regan
Undergraduate Scholarship
The purpose of this project is to offer alternative workspace to the typical desk in a middle school classroom. The project is an adjustable standing desk that students of different height may comfortably use to complete group work. The desk was made to accommodate middle school students and function as a collaborative workspace in the classroom. The design takes into account the tendencies of energetic, fidgeting students by providing a distraction-free alternative to students that prefer standing while doing work.

A hangout/reading area is a place where people go to have fun and relax during the stresses of their everyday life. Our client representative on this project is Pam Brittenburg. She is an English and Spanish teacher at ZANE middle school. She also opens her classroom during breaks for anyone to come in and have fun on days when the conditions outside are less than favorable. This hangout/reading area will serve as a place within her classroom for the kids to engage with one another and relax during such days.
