An Assessment Of Legal Frameworks For Sea Turtle Conservation In The Southeastern United States, Perry A. Fennell
An Assessment Of Legal Frameworks For Sea Turtle Conservation In The Southeastern United States, Perry A. Fennell
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the existence of various legal protections, nesting sea turtles continue to face a myriad of anthropogenic pressures. The Southeastern United States hosts vital nesting grounds for five of the world’s seven species of sea turtle – all of which are listed as either threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. This research characterizes the current legal frameworks and regulatory systems that have been installed for the conservation and recovery of federally protected sea turtles at the local government (county and municipal) level within four states in the southeastern U.S. – North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The …

Learning From The Soil's Memory: Tailoring Of Fertilizer Application Based On Past Manure Applications Increases Fertilizer Use Efficiency And Crop Productivity On Kenyan Smallholder Farms, Samuel Njoroge, Antonius G.T. Schut, Ken E. Giller, Shamie Zingore
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The large uncertainty in yield response to fertilizer application within smallholder cropping systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) limits efforts aimed at intensifying crop production based on increased fertilizer application. We assessed the key field-scale cause of variability in maize (Zea mays) grain yield response to fertilizer nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in the Sidindi area of Western Kenya based on past manure application, distance from the homestead, and clay and silt contents. We used data from nutrient omission trials conducted on 23 farms over seven consecutive cropping seasons covering the period 2013–2016, without changing treatments or plot location. …

The objective of this study was to characterize the oral microbiome (bacteria) and the oral mycobiome (fungi) as caries disease progresses, using site-specific sampling of teeth with different caries disease-states: caries free (PF), early-stage caries (caries in enamel tooth layer; PE), and advanced-stage caries (caries in dentin tooth layer; PD). Dental plaque samples were collected from 46 children (n=84). One plaque sample per caries disease state was collected from each patient (maximum of 3 samples per patient). To determine the changes in the oral microbiome/mycobiome amplicons of the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and the fungal ITS1 …

Applied Psychology Department Faculty Journal Articles
Before she even knew what was happening, he was already on her. He punched her in the face, smashed her head against the wall, and dragged her through the corridor by her hair. The pain was searing; the fear, overwhelming. When help finally arrived, after what seemed like an eternity, the damage had already been done. The effects of the beating were both physical and psychological. The onset of trauma, at first muted by shock, would soon unfold in ways unimaginable to her. Her illusion of safety was shattered. This was her job. She was this person’s caretaker, an authority …

Comparative Study Of Encapsulated Peppermint And Green Tea Essential Oils In Chitosan Nanoparticles: Encapsulation, Thermal Stability, In-Vitro Release, Antioxidant And Antibacterial Activities, Amro Shetta, James Kegere, Wael Mamdouh Sayed Ahmed
Faculty Journal Articles
Essential oils (EOs) such as Peppermint oil (PO) and Green Tea oil (GTO) have extensively been reported for their nutritional and biomedical properties. To overcome the sensitivity of EOs to the environmental conditions, nano-encapsulation has emerged as a method to address this limitation. In this work, PO and GTO were encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) following emulsification/ionic gelation method. The nano-encapsulated PO (CS/PO NPs) and GTO (CS/GTO NPs) were fully characterized by various methods. Spherical NPs with an average size range of 20–60 nm were revealed by TEM for both systems. The loading capacity reached 22.2% and 23.1%, for …

We describe a novel virus, designated Ntepes virus (NPV), isolated from sand flies in Kenya. NPV has the characteristic phlebovirus trisegmented genome architecture and is related to, but distinct from, Gabek Forest phlebovirus. Diverse cell cultures derived from wildlife, livestock, and humans were susceptible to NPV, with pronounced permissiveness in swine and rodent cells. NPV infection of newborn mice caused rapid and fatal illness. Permissiveness for NPV replication in sand fly cells, but not mosquito cells, suggests a vector-specific adaptation. Specific neutralizing antibodies were found in 13.9% (26/187) of human serum samples taken at the site of isolation of NPV …
