Insects that transmit many of the world’s deadliest animal diseases, for instance trypanosomosis, find their suitable hosts and avoid non-preferred hosts mostly through olfactory cues. The waterbuck repellent blend (WRB) comprising geranylacetone, guaiacol, pentanoic acid, and δ-octalactone derived from waterbuck skin odor is a repellent to some savannah-adapted tsetse flies and reduces trap catches of riverine species. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with detection and coding of the repellent odors remain to be elucidated. Here, we demonstrated that WRB inhibited blood feeding in both Glossina pallidipes Austen, 1903 and Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead, 1910. Using the DREAM (Deorphanization …

Dreaming Of Zion: The American West As Place Or Process In Fallout: New Vegas’S Honest Hearts Dlc, David Schwartz
Executive Vice President & Provost Faculty Research
As a Western set in a post-apocalyptic Mohave, Fallout: New Vegas demonstrates that the big questions that drive Western history are durable and malleable enough to survive even the (fictional) nuclear demise of the United States itself. The fourth iteration of the Fallout franchise is set approximately 200 years after a civilization-ending nuclear war but is valuable for teachers of American history because several major themes of real-life Western historiography are embedded in it. In fact, as I will demonstrate in this essay, the game, and particularly the Honest Hearts DLC, can be used to not just demonstrate, but to …

There is a certain inhumanity to stealing from the poor, from the disenfranchised, from children, and quite simply, from one’s own society. But the magnitude of such cruelty is further elevated when the theft is undertaken and brazenly justified by those in positions of political power.
After Howard, Before The Mirage: The Early Corporate Era Of Nevada Casinos And The Shifting Visual Landscape Of Las Vegas, David Schwartz
After Howard, Before The Mirage: The Early Corporate Era Of Nevada Casinos And The Shifting Visual Landscape Of Las Vegas, David Schwartz
Executive Vice President & Provost Faculty Research
Las Vegas casino history is often divided into the “classic” or “Rat Pack” era and the “corporate” or “megaresort era.” Classic Vegas starts in the early 1950s as the burgeoning gaming industry established itself on the Strip and can be said to end in 1967, when Howard Hughes’ purchase of five casinos signaled the start of a new regime. The megaresort era started in 1989 with the opening of The Mirage, and the time between Hughes’ arrival and Steve Wynn’s game-changer is typically brushed over as a mere precursor to the massive changes of the 1990s.

Everyone who was in Las Vegas on the morning of November 21, 1980 remembers what they were doing when they heard that the MGM Grand was burning. It was the worst disaster in the city’s history, and, at the time, the second-worst hotel fire in the nation’s history. (The 1946 fire in Atlanta’s Winecoff Hotel, which claimed 119 lives, had that dubious honor.) All told, the MGM Grand fire would claim 87 lives. Thursday night had ended normally. At 7:15 Friday morning, a fast-moving fire erupted from the hotel’s deli, racing through the casino and sending toxic smoke through the …

An inflation model based on dimensional (de)construction of a massive gauge theory is proposed. The inflaton in this model is the "zero-mode"of a component of the massive gauge field in the (de)constructed extra dimensions. The inflaton potential originates from the gauge invariant Stueckelberg potential. At low energy, the field range of the inflaton is enhanced by a factor Nd/2 compared to the field range of the original fields in the model, where d is the number of the (de)constructed extra dimensions and N is the number of the lattice points in each (de)constructed dimension. This enhancement of the field range …

Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are the antihypertensive drugs associated with side effects, majorly such as cough and electrolyte disturbance. Azilsartan is a newly marketed ARB in India, not even having a well-established adverse effect profile. Here, we present a 58-year-old female who was admitted to the emergency department showing signs and symptoms of delirium, disorientation, and vomiting for 4 days. The patient is known to have coronary artery disease so that she underwent coronary artery bypass grafting. She was recently started on azilsartan for her chronic hypertension, along with other drugs. The presence of electrolyte imbalance in laboratory reports …

Introduction: Primary membranous nephropathy (PMN) is an autoimmune disease. Both T-regulatory cells (TREGs) and B-regulatory cells (BREGs) are decreased in patients with autoimmune disease. We evaluated the TREG and BREG population in patients of PMN treated with cyclical cyclophosphamide and steroid therapy (cCYC/GC). Methods: Twenty-four patients with PMN resistant to a restrictive strategy and treated with cCYC/GC therapy and 10 healthy controls were enrolled. The proteinuria, serum creatinine, and serum albumin were tested at monthly intervals and blood samples were collected before starting cCYC/GC and at 6 and 8 (2 months wash out) months of therapy. The peripheral blood mononuclear …

Background Oesophageal cancer is a common and often fatal cancer that has two main histological subtypes: oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Updated statistics on the incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer, and on the disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) caused by the disease, can assist policy makers in allocating resources for prevention, treatment, and care of oesophageal cancer. We report the latest estimates of these statistics for 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2017, by age, sex, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD). Methods We used …
