Community Health Workers For Pandemic Response: A Rapid Evidence Synthesis, Soumyadeep Bhaumik, Sandeep Moola, Jyoti Tyagi, Devaki Nambiar

Introduction Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), affects 213 countries or territories globally. We received a request from National Health Systems Resource Centre, a public agency in India, to conduct rapid evidence synthesis (RES) on community health workers (CHWs) for COVID-19 prevention and control in 3 days. Methods We searched PubMed, websites of ministries (n=3), public agencies (n=6), multilateral institutions (n=3), COVID-19 resource aggregators (n=5) and preprints (n=1) (without language restrictions) for articles on CHWs in pandemics. Two reviewers screened the records independently with a third reviewer resolving disagreements. One reviewer extracted data with another reviewer cross-checking it. A framework on CHW performance …

Mediation Of Potato–Potato Cyst Nematode, G. Rostochiensis Interaction By Specific Root Exudate Compounds, Juliet Ochola, Laura Cortada, Margaret Ng’Ang’A, Ahmed Hassanali, Danny Coyne, Baldwyn Torto

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a widely consumed staple food crop worldwide whose production is threatened by potato cyst nematodes (PCN). To infect a host, PCN eggs first need to be stimulated to hatch by chemical components in the host root exudates, yet it remains unknown how most root exudate components influence PCN behavior. Here, we evaluated the influence of eight compounds identified by LC-QqQ-MS in the root exudate of potato on the hatching response of the PCN, Globodera rostochiensis at varying doses. The eight compounds included the amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine; phytohormones zeatin and methyl dihydrojasmonate; steroidal glycoalkaloids …

Dataset On Soil Physio-Chemical Properties And Seasonal Moisture And Nutrient Dynamics In Temporary Stream Channels And Contributing Uplands In Arizona, Usa, Kathleen A. Lohse, Erika L. Gallo, Thomas Meixner Jun 2020

Dataset On Soil Physio-Chemical Properties And Seasonal Moisture And Nutrient Dynamics In Temporary Stream Channels And Contributing Uplands In Arizona, Usa, Kathleen A. Lohse, Erika L. Gallo, Thomas Meixner

Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data

Ephemeral and intermittent streams are increasing with climate and land use changes, and alteration in stream water presence or flow duration will likely affect soil nutrient dynamics in channel and riparian zones more than dryland uplands. To investigate the influence of varying climate and stream flow regimes on associated soil nutrient dynamics, we monitored soil moisture and nutrient dynamics over an 18-month period across a range of ephemeral to seasonally- intermittent stream reaches (13) and landscape positions (channel, riparian, upland) in Arizona, USA. The monitoring reaches were located in largely undisturbed military facilities, long term ecological research areas and a …

Ephemeral and intermittent streams are increasing with climate and land use changes, and alteration in stream water presence or flow duration will likely affect litter decomposition in channel and riparian zones more than dryland uplands. To investigate the influence of varying climate and stream flow regimes on rates of decomposition, we used a space-for-time substitution design and deployed common leaf litter over an 18-month period across a range of ephemeral to seasonally- intermittent stream reaches (10) and landscape positions (channel, riparian, upland) in Arizona, USA. The monitoring reaches were located in largely undisturbed military facilities, long term ecological research areas …

Design And Fabrication Of Low-Cost Microfluidic Channel For Biomedical Application, Shailendra Kumar Tiwari, Somashekara Bhat, Krishna K. Mahato Jun 2020

Design And Fabrication Of Low-Cost Microfluidic Channel For Biomedical Application, Shailendra Kumar Tiwari, Somashekara Bhat, Krishna K. Mahato

Open Access archive

This paper presents the design, simulation and low-cost fabrication of microfluidic channel for biomedical application. Channel is fabricated using soft lithography technique. Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is used to make the master for the channel. Channel pattern is transferred on PCB plate using toner transfer technique followed by ferric chloride etching. Paper also discusses, the issues involved in PCB based master fabrication and their viable solutions. Glass is used as substrate material and the channel is made of Sylgard 184 Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Channel is interfaced with a syringe pump to observe the fluid flow. To predict the behavior of the …

Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood diarrhoea. Methods We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk …

Panel Discussion: Going Online: Towards A Preliminary Balance Sheet, Bahgat Korany, Aziza Ellozy

Audio & Video by Faculty: Webinars, interviews, documentaries, etc...

One of the most important results of the COVID-19 lockdown is going online, where we are now conducting meetings and teaching virtually. Although some activities will be carried out the same way post-pandemic as they were before, others will not. A few activities that now take place online will remain online, becoming the new normal. Will teaching be one of them? Is that what we want and should plan for? To answer these questions and look ahead, we need to assess the experience that we went through: what are its pros and cons? What advantages and disadvantages did we discover? …

Annotated List Of Anurans From The Lateritic Plateau Of Western India With Notes On Malformations, Madhushri Mudke, K. V. Gururaja, Neelvara Aravind, Ramit Singal

Lateritic plateaus of India are geographically and ecologically complex plateaus that support endemic flora and fauna. However, despite their uniqueness they are termed as “wastelands”. The plateaus’ overall treeless structure makes them susceptible to developmental activities like infrastructure growth, waste dumping, and urbanization. This paper presents a list of anurans compiled from surveys carried out in the years between 2016 and 2018 in the town of Manipal, a predominant lateritic landscape on the west coast of India. The list comprises of 19 species belonging to five different families, includes notes on microhabitat structure and associated species. We also present descriptions …
