Functional Annotation Of Genomic Variation: Dna Methylation Episignatures In Neurodevelopmental Mendelian Disorders, Bekim Sadikovic, Michael A. Levy, Erfan Aref-Eshghi

Paediatrics Publications

The breadth and complexity of genetic testing in patients with suspected Mendelian neurodevelopmental disorders has rapidly expanded in the past two decades. However, in spite of advances in genomic technologies, genetic diagnosis remains elusive in more than half of these patients. Epigenomics, and in particular genomic DNA methylation profiles, are now known to be associated with the underpinning genetic defects in a growing number of Mendelian disorders. These often highly specific and sensitive molecular biomarkers have been used to screen these patient populations, resolve ambiguous clinical cases and interpret genetic variants of unknown clinical significance. Increasing the diagnostic yield beyond …

Reporting The Spanish Influenza Epidemic In Nevada, Peter Michel Sep 2020

Reporting The Spanish Influenza Epidemic In Nevada, Peter Michel

Library Faculty Research

The last great global pandemic before COVID 19 was the Spanish Influenza of 1918-20 which killed by some estimates over 30,000,000 people, 675,000 of those in the United States, ten-times the number of Americans who died in World War I. In another historical comparison, more people died of the Spanish Influenza in one year than died in four years of the Black Death of 1347-1351 in which a third of Europe’s population perished. In the early days of mass communication by telegraph and newspapers, compared to our own age of instant, constant streaming information, how did people know what was …

Antibiotic Overuse In The Primary Health Care Setting: A Secondary Data Analysis Of Standardised Patient Studies From India, China And Kenya, Giorgia Sulis, Benjamin Daniels, Ada Kwan, Sumanth Gandra

Open Access archive

Introduction Determining whether antibiotic prescriptions are inappropriate requires knowledge of patients' underlying conditions. In low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where misdiagnoses are frequent, this is challenging. Additionally, such details are often unavailable for prescription audits. Recent studies using standardised patients (SPs) offer a unique opportunity to generate unbiased prevalence estimates of antibiotic overuse, as the research design involves patients with predefined conditions. Methods Secondary analyses of data from nine SP studies were performed to estimate the proportion of SP-provider interactions resulting in inappropriate antibiotic prescribing across primary care settings in three LMICs (China, India and Kenya). In all studies, SPs …

Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown Sep 2020

Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown

History Faculty Research

Andrew Dickson White is not considered a canonical author in the French Revolution's historiography, but rather is known as the founding president of both Cornell University and the American Historical Association (AHA). His best-known published historical writings, when referenced at all, are often derided. Yet in his intellectually formative years, as an earnest abolitionist and amibtious Republican, eager to enter the arena of American political life and anticipating what he would later call "the great revolution" of the Civil War, White made the topic his central academic pursuit - and effectively invented a distinctly American tradition of historiography.

Home-Modification Interventions Addressing Falls And Participation In Activities Of Daily Living Among Older Adults: A Scoping Review Protocol, Gifty M. Georlee, Abiram Abiram, Pham Ngoc Dat, Nguyen Khac Tuan

Open Access archive

Introduction Falls are the second leading reason for incidental or unexpected deaths worldwide. Many older adults who fall, regardless of whether they are injured or not, tend to experience fear of fall and this can lead to decreased participation in activities of daily living (ADLs). Subsequent falls lead to weakness, a decline in physical functioning, increased chances of falling and a negative impact on the instrumental ADLs. Here, we present our scoping review protocol to appraise the literature to describe and explain the home-modification interventions used by occupational therapists to address falls and participation in ADLs among community-dwelling older adults. …

The Choice Of Parenthood: Abortion And Protecting Autonomy, Nimmi M. Mathews Sep 2020

The Choice Of Parenthood: Abortion And Protecting Autonomy, Nimmi M. Mathews

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

This paper attempts to address the morality of abortion using a Kantian perspective on the significance of autonomy, a property that all rational beings subscribe to. I reject the oft argued notion that the ethicality of abortion is contingent on the ability to determine whether the fetus possesses the right to life. Instead, I claim that denying women the choice to obtain an abortion disrespects their autonomy, hence requiring them to take up motherhood against their will. I then discuss how Kant’s framework for morality is demonstrated heavily in the legal concept of ‘human rights', and yet this is not …

Changes In Water Vapor Adsorption And Water Film Thickness In Clayey Materials As A Function Of Relative Humidity, Qinhong Hu Sep 2020

Changes In Water Vapor Adsorption And Water Film Thickness In Clayey Materials As A Function Of Relative Humidity, Qinhong Hu

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

Soil water, with adsorbed water being an important component, plays an important role in fluid flow and chemical movement in the unsaturated zone. The adsorbed water consists of water film and interlayer water, and its content is related to the relative humidity (RH). This study theoretically and experimentally focuses on the variation in adsorbed water content in clayey materials as the RH changes. Based on a slit-pore model, three types of water (water film, interlayer water, and capillary water) could be present in the water vapor adsorption process. The variation of water film is obtained from the analysis of interfacial …
