New Hampshire Atlantic Beaches: 2017 Field Campaign Database - Field And Sample Photographs And Sediment Data, Larry Ward, Nathan W. Corcoran, Zachary S. Mcavoy, Rachel C. Morrison
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Sediment data, sediment photographs, and field photographs from a major field campaign conducted on the New Hampshire Atlantic beaches in 2017 are presented here. Research was carried out with the purpose of better understanding how sediment grain size of NH beaches varies under accretional and erosional conditions. Seven major beaches along the NH coast (Wallis Sands, Foss Beach, Jenness Beach, North Hampton Beach, North Beach, Hampton Beach, and Seabrook Beach) representing the range of morphologic and sedimentologic types found on the NH coast were sampled along multiple transects and multiple locations on each transect. This work provides baseline data to …

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Open Science is the movement to make scientific research and data accessible to all. It has great potential for advancing science. At its core, it includes (but is not limited to) open access, open data, and open research. Some of the associated advantages are promoting collaboration, sharing and reproducibility in research, and preventing the reinvention of the wheel, thus saving resources. As research becomes more globalized and its output grows exponentially, especially in data, the need for open scientific research practices is more evident — the future of modern …

The riverine tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes fuscipes is a major vector of trypanosome pathogens causing African trypanosomiasis. This fly species uses a combination of olfactory and visual cues to locate its hosts. Previously, traps and targets baited with visual cues have been used in vector control, but the development of olfactory-based tools has been challenging. Recently, repellents have shown promise as olfactory-based tools in tsetse vector control. Here, we evaluated a three-component blend comprising 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, acetophenone and geranyl acetone (blend K), previously identified as a repellent for savannah tsetse flies in zebra skin odor, on G. f. fuscipes populations. Using …

Assessing And Understanding Non-Responsiveness Of Maize And Soybean To Fertilizer Applications In African Smallholder Farms, Dries Roobroeck, Cheryl A. Palm, Generose Nziguheba, Ray Weil, Bernard Vanlauwe

Use of mineral fertilizers is essential to enhance crop productivity in smallholder farming systems of Sub-Saharan Africa, but various studies have reported ‘non-responsiveness’ where application of inorganic fertilizers does not lead to satisfactory yield gains. This phenomenon is not well defined nor are its extent and causes well understood. In order to close these knowledge gaps, we assessed the effects of commonly recommended nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and/or potassium (K) fertilizer inputs on maize grain and soybean production on farmer fields across prevalent land slope and/or soil texture gradients (2 × 2 matrix) in four agroecosystems over two growing seasons. …

“Conservation Agriculture, " Possible Climate Change Adaptation Option In Taita Hills, Kenya, Lilian Motaroki, Gilbert Ouma, Dorcas Kalele
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The vicious cycle of food insecurity in Kenya and Africa at large is partly attributed to the high reliance on rainfed agriculture, which makes production systems vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change and variability. Conservation agriculture (CA) has been disseminated as a climate-smart practice that operates on three main principles to realize the multiple benefits of making crop production systems more resilient to climate change impacts, enhancing food security, and providing environmental services, such as carbon sequestration. As a major source of livelihood in the Taita Hills, agriculture is constrained by climate change owing to its rainfed nature. …

One of the most important tasks in road maintenance is the detection of potholes. This process is usually done through manual visual inspection, where certified engineers assess recorded images of pavements acquired using cameras or professional road assessment vehicles. Machine learning techniques are now being applied to this problem, with models trained to automatically identify road conditions. However, approaching this real-world problem with machine learning techniques presents the classic problem of how to produce generalizable models. Images and videos may be captured in different illumination conditions, with different camera types, camera angles and resolutions. In this paper we present our …

Learning organizations are the hubs of knowledge generation and dissemination. Academicians need organizational support to accomplish these time-consuming tasks effectively. The academician, when satisfied with his or her own work, is committed to the organization and demonstrates higher work productivity and work quality. The present study, with a cross-sectional design, was aimed to assess the level of job satisfaction (gender-wise) and its determinants, among academicians, in the institutions of higher education in Karnataka. The study used a validated job satisfaction questionnaire developed by the researchers. The overall job satisfaction was satisfactory and did not differ between the male and female …

Valuation is an art which has found various use in different sectors. But it is seldom restricted to the boundaries of engineers and architects when it comes to property valuation. In the present study, the market value of a residential building situated in Udupi, Karnataka State, India is predicted using Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) based on the factors affecting the value of the property. This value is then compared with the values obtained by the conventional approaches of valuation like Land and Building method, Rental Income Approach, Composite Rate method and by detailed estimation approach. The property under valuation has …

Turbo-pump is an essential component in any rocket engine. The airfoil (NGTE 10C4 series) section of a rotor blade in the SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine) was modelled along with a far-field of suitable shape and dimensions. The model was suitably discretized with proper amount of refinement, etc. A numerical simulation was then carried-out using ANSYS software with several iterations of varying inlet boundary conditions to check for any improvement in the performance of the rotor blade. Inlet velocity for optimum functionality of the blade was identified.

The objective of the paper is to conduct aerodynamic analysis on V-2 missile. The V-2 missile was the world's first ballistic missile and the first object to go into space. It is a long-range liquid propelled missile. It uses aerodynamic surfaces such as wings, fins, control surfaces and fuselage to deliver the lateral maneuverability. This is accomplished by deflecting the control surfaces through the actuation mechanism and thereby modifying the equilibrium forces and producing various moments. The V-2 missile was 14 meters long and weighed 12,700-13,200 kg at launching. It produces about 266 KN of thrust. ANSYS modeler is used …

This paper presents the numerical analysis on the impact of combined U-shaped rib and semi-circular rib on heat transfer augmentation of flat plate solar air heater system. The analysis is done using the ANSYS Fluent software for various flow Reynolds number ranging from 8000 to 17000. The ribs are placed alternately on the underside of heated plate for a fixed stream-wise pitch of 35mm. The rib height is so chosen that the diameter of semi-circular rib equals the rib height of U-shaped rib. The rib height (e) is varied as 2mm, 3mm and 4mm. The analysis reveals that the combined ribs …

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), principally ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. This paper reviews the magnitude of total CVD burden, including 13 underlying causes of cardiovascular death and 9 related risk factors, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. GBD, an ongoing multinational collaboration to provide comparable and consistent estimates of population health over time, used all available population-level data sources on incidence, prevalence, case fatality, mortality, and health risks to produce estimates for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Prevalent cases …
