Data Repository For "Use Of Redwood Basal Hollows By Bats: A Focus On The Townsend’S Big-Eared Bat On The North Coast Of California", Amon J. Armstrong

Research Data Sets

Loss of roosting resources, either through disturbance or removal, negatively affects bats. Identifying sensitive species and determining roost requirements are critical components in conserving their habitat. Cavity roosting bats on the North Coast of California are known to use hollows in large redwood trees. In this study, we examined the factors determining the use of basal tree hollows by different bat species at eight redwood forest sites in Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties, California. Bat guano was collected from 179 basal hollow roosts from 2017 to 2018, and guano mass was used as an index of roosting activity. Nine …

Assessment Of The Fluoride Concentration In Drinking Water And Tea In The Arusha Region Of Tanzania, Sophia Bakar, David Kahler, Alanna Bachtlin, Kara Okular, Kathleen Glancey, Abbey Whitewood

Environmental Science Datasets

High fluoride concentrations in drinking water affect millions of people around the world; however, fluoride can come from several sources. The World Health Organization recommends a fluoride concentration in drinking water of no more than 1.5 mg/L; fluoride above this concentration can cause long-term problems known as fluorosis, such as mottled teeth and increased risk of dental caries, or skeletal deformities. Rural communities near Arusha, Tanzania have high fluoride concentrations in their water. Adults and children of the Arusha Region rely heavily on tea for daily water consumption, which has the benefit of disinfection by boiling. Researchers investigated water quality, …

CReSCENT: CanceR Single Cell ExpressioN Toolkit (https://crescent.cloud), is an intuitive and scalable web portal incorporating a containerized pipeline execution engine for standardized analysis of singlecell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. While scRNA-seq data for tumour specimens are readily generated, subsequent analysis requires highperformance computing infrastructure and user expertise to build analysis pipelines and tailor interpretation for cancer biology. CReSCENT uses public data sets and preconfigured pipelines that are accessible to computational biology non-experts and are user-editable to allow optimization, comparison, and reanalysis for specific experiments. Users can also upload their own scRNA-seq data for analysis and results can be kept private …

Paediatric Pharmacotherapy And Drug Regulation: Moving Past The Therapeutic Orphan, Charlotte Moore-Hepburn, Michael Rieder Jan 2021

Paediatric Pharmacotherapy And Drug Regulation: Moving Past The Therapeutic Orphan, Charlotte Moore-Hepburn, Michael Rieder

Paediatrics Publications

The development of specific drug therapy for children was a paradigm-changing event that transformed paediatric medical practice. However, a series of tragedies involving drug treatment for children resulted in a gap developing between drug regulation and practice, with the majority of drugs used in child healthcare being used off-label, rendering children therapeutic orphans. Over the past two decades changes in drug regulation led by the US Food and Drug Administration and followed by the European Union's European Medicines Agency have led to substantial changes in how new drugs with potential use in children are studied and labelled. While these changes …

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Reliable mapping of system-level individual differences is a critical first step toward precision medicine for complex disorders such as schizophrenia. Disrupted structural covariance indicates a system-level brain maturational disruption in schizophrenia. However, most studies examine structural covariance at the group level. This prevents subject-level inferences. Here, we introduce a Network Template Perturbation approach to construct individual differential structural covariance network (IDSCN) using regional gray-matter volume. IDSCN quantifies how structural covariance between two nodes in a patient deviates from the normative covariance in healthy subjects. We analyzed T1 images from 1287 subjects, including 107 first-episode (drug-naive) patients and 71 controls in …

Aggregation Controlled Charge Generation In Fullerene Based Bulk Heterojunction Polymer Solar Cells: Effect Of Additive, Washat Ware, Tia Wright, Yimin Mao, Shubo Han, Jessa Guffie, Evgeny O. Danilov, Jeromy Rech, Wei You, Zhiping Luo, Bhoj Gautam

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Optimization of charge generation in polymer blends is crucial for the fabrication of highly efficient polymer solar cells. While the impacts of the polymer chemical structure, energy alignment, and interface on charge generation have been well studied, not much is known about the impact of polymer aggregation on charge generation. Here, we studied the impact of aggregation on charge generation using transient absorption spectroscopy, neutron scattering, and atomic force microscopy. Our measurements indicate that the 1,8-diiodooctane additive can change the aggregation behavior of poly(benzodithiophene-alt-dithienyl difluorobenzotriazole (PBnDT-FTAZ) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)polymer blends and impact the charge generation process. Our …

This dataset consists of approximately 13,000 jpg format images. These images were collected using consumer grade trail cameras manufactured by Browning Trail Cameras. Cameras were installed across Mississippi (USA) in 2019 and 2020 from March through September. Images collected are exclusively oblique, unobstructed views of the sky. Cameras were placed in time-lapse mode and set to collect one image every hour. Our intent in this work was to first compare deep learning approaches to classify sky conditions with regard to cloud shadows in agricultural fields using a visible spectrum camera. Sky conditions, and specifically shadowing from clouds, are critical determinants …

The Balancing Act Is Magnified: U.S. Mothers’ Struggles Amidst A Pandemic, Grace Ellen Brannon, Molly Wiant Cummins Jan 2021

The Balancing Act Is Magnified: U.S. Mothers’ Struggles Amidst A Pandemic, Grace Ellen Brannon, Molly Wiant Cummins

Communication Faculty Publications - Archive

Successes are often noticed in reflection after an event; struggles are felt in the moment. When COVID-19 was recognized as a public health emergency in the United States (US), many mothers felt their struggles more acutely. Much of 2020 feels like a pressure cooker for mothers, where the steam valve does not fully relieve the mounting pressure they felt because of COVID-19. Most families are experiencing additional stress due to COVID-19, but in heterosexual couples, that work disproportionately falls to women, as they are spending, on average, fifteen hours more per week on education and household tasks (Cohen and Hsu). …

Faculty and Staff Works

Millipedes are ubiquitous soil invertebrates that play major roles in physical and chemical processes in soil. Despite their importance to soil ecology and their presumed interactions with soil microorganisms, little is known about how millipedes influence and are influenced by soil microbes. Furthermore, it is not fully understood how these millipede-microbe interactions are influenced by available soil nitrogen, which is predicted to increase over the foreseeable future with increased anthropogenic production. Here, using the millipede Cherokia georgiana georgiana as a model and using a manipulative mesocosm and metabarcoding approach, we examine (1) the impacts of millipedes on soil microbial communities …

Avian Reproductive Success Is Associated With Multiple Vegetation Characteristics At An Active Grassland Restoration Site In Central Georgia, Kayla Allen, Katie Stumpf Jan 2021

Avian Reproductive Success Is Associated With Multiple Vegetation Characteristics At An Active Grassland Restoration Site In Central Georgia, Kayla Allen, Katie Stumpf

Faculty and Staff Works

Grassland bird populations are experiencing major declines due to habitat degradation, pesticide use, and fire suppression throughout North America. Large-scale grassland restoration efforts to improve and provide suitable habitat are ongoing, but there is little data on productivity of birds breeding in restored habitats, nor on the impact of specific vegetation characteristics on reproductive success. Since 2005, agriculture fields at Panola Mountain State Park in central Georgia have been undergoing restoration to warm-season grasslands; however, until now, data on nest success or productivity was lacking. The goals of this project were to: (1) quantify reproductive success and (2) determine which …
