In 2018 and 2019, Infusing Computing offered face-to-face summer PD workshops to support middle and high school teachers in integrating computational thinking into their classrooms through week-long summer PD workshops and academic-year support. Due to COVID-19, 151 teachers attended the Summer 2020 PD workshops in a week-long virtual conference format. In this paper, we describe Virtual Pivot: Infusing Computing, which employed emerging technology tools, pre-PD training, synchronous and asynchronous sessions, Snap! pair programming, live support, and live networking. Drawing on findings from participant interviews and post-PD surveys, we argue that three categories of changes (digital tools, formats, and supports for …

Distribution Of Oil Concentration And Oil Mass In The Gulf Of Mexico Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Simulated By The Connectivity Modeling System (Cms) Using Two-Phase Droplet And Internal Degassing Parameterizations, Claire B. Paris, Natalie Perlin, Ana C. Vaz Mar 2021

Vaz

C-IMAGE data

The latest version of the oil application of the Connectivity Modeling System (CMS) or oil-CMS is used to run a series of far-field simulations of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout (2010-04-20) in the Gulf of Mexico. These simulations adopt a two-phase approach with methane gas and liquid oil in the same oil droplet, following the concept of “live oil” that features gas-saturated oil formed under deep-pressure low-temperature conditions, as during deep-sea blowouts. When the oil droplets rise in the water column, they experience an internal degassing process (Pesch et al., 2018), which affects their size, density, and surfacing speed. The …

Faculty Publications

Importance Personal activity intelligence (PAI) is a novel activity metric that can be integrated into self-assessment heart rate devices, and translates heart rate variations during exercise into a weekly score. Previous studies relating to PAI have been conducted in the same populations from Norway where the PAI metric has been derived, limiting generalizability of the results.

Objective: To test whether PAI is associated with total and cause-specific mortality in a large cohort from the United States.

Design: Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (ACLS) – a prospective cohort between January 1974 and December 2002 with a mean follow-up of 14.5 years.

Biological Sciences Data

A central theme for conservation is understanding how animals differentially use, and are affected by change in, the landscapes they inhabit. However, it has been challenging to develop conservation schemes for habitat-specific behaviors. Here we use Behavioral Change Point Analysis to identify behavioral states of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) in the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts of the southwestern United States, and we identify, for each behavioral state, conservation-relevant habitat associations. We modeled behavior using186,859 GPS points from 48 eagles and identified 2851 distinct segments comprising four behavioral states. Altitude above ground level (AGL) best differentiated behavioral states, with two clusters …

Developing Implementation Strategies To Adopt Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (Eras®) Guidelines, Jennifer Y. Lam, Alexandra Howlett, Duncan Mcluckie, Lori M. Stephen, Scott D.N. Else, Ashley Jones, Paul Beaudry, Mary E. Brindle

Paediatrics Publications

BACKGROUND: Strong implementation strategies are critical to the success of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS®) guidelines, though little documentation exists on effective strategies, especially in complex clinical situations and unfamiliar contexts. This study outlines the process taken to adopt a novel neonatal ERAS® guideline. METHODS: The implementation strategy was approached in a multi-pronged, concurrent but asynchronous fashion. Between September 2019 and January 2020, healthcare providers from various disciplines and different specialties as well as parents participated in the strategy. Multidisciplinary teams were created to consider existing literature and local contexts including potential facilitators and/or barriers. Task forces worked collaboratively to …

Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data

Geologic, geomorphic, and climatic factors have been hypothesized to influence stream drying patterns, but hydrologists struggle to explain spatiotemporal patterns of drying. Few hydrologists have isolated the role that vegetation plays in controlling the timing and location of stream drying. We continuously measured the presence and absence of streamflow at twenty-five locations at Murphy Creek within the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed and Critical Zone Observatory. In addition to streamflow observations, we modeled evapotranspiration and calculated the normalized vegetation difference index (NDVI) at each of the same twenty-five locations. We found that evapotranspiration impacts the timing of stream drying and that …
