The Neon Bible, From Page To Screen: John Kennedy Toole’S Portrait Of Small-Town Southern Life, Heather Duerre Humann

Study the South

Louisiana-born writer John Kennedy Toole (1937–1969) represents the South in such a way that stereotypes about the region are brought to bear, he also uses his novels -- his short novel, The Neon Bible (1989), and in his better-known tragicomic novel, A Confederacy of Dunces (1980) -- to question the culture of the South. In this manner, Toole offers a multifaceted portrait of the region while also raising questions about the nature of representation.

Isolation And Characterization Of Circulating Pro-Vascular Progenitor Cell Subsets From Human Whole Blood Samples, Daniella C. Terenzi, Ehab Bakbak, Justin Z. Trac, Mohammad Al-Omran, Adrian Quan, Hwee Teoh, Subodh Verma, David A. Hess

Paediatrics Publications

The examination of circulating pro-vascular progenitor cell frequency and function is integral in understanding aberrant blood vessel homeostasis in individuals with cardiometabolic disease. Here, we outline the characterization of progenitor cell subsets from peripheral blood using high aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, an intracellular detoxification enzyme previously associated with pro-vascular progenitor cell status. Using this protocol, cells can be examined by flow cytometry for ALDH activity and lineage restricted cell surface markers simultaneously. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Terenzi et al. (2019) and Hess et al. (2019, 2020).

Effects Of Flight Altitude On The Lift Generation Of Monarch Butterflies: From Sea Level To Overwintering Mountain, Madhu K. Sridhar, Chang-Kwon Kang, Brian D. Landrum, Hikaru Aono, Shannon L. Mathis, Taeyoung Lee Mar 2021

Effects Of Flight Altitude On The Lift Generation Of Monarch Butterflies: From Sea Level To Overwintering Mountain, Madhu K. Sridhar, Chang-Kwon Kang, Brian D. Landrum, Hikaru Aono, Shannon L. Mathis, Taeyoung Lee

PRC-Affiliated Research

Aerodynamic efficiency behind the annual migration of monarch butterflies, the longest among insects, is an unsolved mystery. Monarchs migrate 4000 km at high-altitudes to their overwintering mountains in Central Mexico. The air is thinner at higher altitudes, yielding reduced aerodynamic drag and enhanced range. However, the lift is also expected to reduce in lower density conditions. To investigate the ability of monarchs to produce sufficient lift to fly in thinner air, we measured the climbing motion of freely flying monarchs in high-altitude conditions. An optical method was used to track the flapping wing and body motions inside a large pressure …

Impact Of Obesity On Outcomes Of Pregnancy In Women With Heart Disease, Birgit Pfaller, Samuel C. Siu, Rohan D'Souza, Barbara Wichert-Schmitt, Govind Krishna Kumar Nair, Kim Haberer, Cynthia Maxwell, Candice K. Silversides

Paediatrics Publications

Background: Women with heart disease are at risk for complications during pregnancy. This study sought to examine the effect of maternal obesity on pregnancy complications in women with heart disease. Objectives: The objective was to determine the incidence of adverse cardiac events (CE) in pregnant women with heart disease and obesity. Methods: Adverse CE during pregnancy were examined in a prospective cohort of women with heart disease. CE were a composite of the following: cardiac death/arrest, arrhythmias, heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke, aortic dissection, and thromboembolic events. Pre-eclampsia and post-partum hemorrhage were also studied. Outcomes were examined according to body …

College of Health, Science, and Technology

CaF2 is a promising luminescent host material for a wide range of applications, due to its high transparency, non-hygroscopy, low refractive index, low density, low backscattering efficiency, and abundance in nature. This paper reports the photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) characteristics of rare-earth-doped CaF2 nanoparticles and their composite monoliths with epoxy with visible emissions. The CaF2 nanoparticles of ca. 36, 108 and 305 nm were prepared by a facile solution-mixing process and subsequent hydrothermal treatment. As the particle size decreases, the luminescence intensity increases for single-doped particles, while oppositely decreases for codoped particles because of energy transfer. Further, Eu2+- and …
