Bowhunter’S Syndrome: An Uncommon Cause Of Syncope, Jake Kieserman, Alec Talsania, Jonathan Hosey
Center for Neurosciences Research @SLUHN Articles & Publications
Objective: We present a case of Bowhunter’s in a patient who underwent extensive evaluation. Asking about the relationship between symptoms and head position may have allowed us to reach the diagnosis more quickly. Background: An uncommon cause of syncope is dynamic rotational occlusion of the vertebral artery (VA), also known as Bowhunter’s Syndrome. Torsion of the neck compresses the vessel, causing dizziness, syncope, and even thrombotic stroke. Case: 74-year-old male, history of hypertension, diabetes and alcohol use disorder presented to ED with syncope. Lightheadedness and tunnel vision accompanied syncope with several days of diarrhea and heavy alcohol consumption. Review of …

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is an important mediator of breast cancer progression. Cancer-associated fibroblasts constitute a major component of the TME and may originate from tissue-associated fibroblasts or infiltrating mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). The mechanisms by which cancer cells activate fibroblasts and recruit MSCs to the TME are largely unknown, but likely include deposition of a pro-tumorigenic secretome. The secreted embryonic protein NODAL is clinically associated with breast cancer stage and promotes tumor growth, metastasis, and vascularization. Herein, we show that NODAL expression correlates with the presence of activated fibroblasts in human triple-negative breast cancers and that it directly induces …

Background: We previously conducted the Probiotic Regimen for Outpatient Gastroenteritis Utility of Treatment (PROGUT) study, which identified no improvements in children with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) administered a probiotic. However, the aforementioned study did not evaluate immunomodulatory benefits. Objectives: The object of this study was to determine if stool secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) concentrations in children with AGE increase more among participants administered a Lactobacillus rhamnosus/helveticus probiotic compared with those administered placebo. Methods: This a priori planned multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled ancillary study enrolled children presenting for emergency care who received a 5-d probiotic or placebo course. Participants submitted stool specimens …

The Use Of Oral Opioids To Control Children's Pain In The Post-Codeine Era, Michael J. Rieder, Geert't Jong
Paediatrics Publications
Pain is a common problem for children, and pain management comprises both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic measures. For moderate to severe pain, oral opioids have been a popular choice for the last few decades. Codeine has historically been the best-known oral opioid for use in children. However, availability and use of codeine have sharply declined due to safety concerns. A variety of other opioids have been used in place of codeine, but data are limited regarding their efficacy and safety in children. While the same pathways metabolize oral oxycodone as codeine, oxycodone's pharmacokinetics varies widely. There are also limited data on …

Nickel-Fe3 O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles Supported On Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes: Effective Catalyst In Suzuki Cross Coupling Reactions, Sojeong K. Folsom, Destiny J. Ivey, Frank S. Mcnair, Ali R. Siamaki
College of Health, Science, and Technology
Nickel-Fe3 O4 nanoparticles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-Fe3 O4 /MW-CNTs) were synthesized by mechanical grinding of a sample of nickel salt, Fe3 O4 and MWCNTs using a ball-mill mixer. The preparation method allows for bulk production of Ni-Fe3 O4 nanoparticles at room temperature without the necessity of any solvent or chemical reagent. The nanoparticles prepared by this method exhibit small particles size of 5–8 nm with uniform dispersion of nickel nanoparticles on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The Ni-Fe3 O4 /MWCNTs demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity for Suzuki cross coupling reactions of functionalized aryl halides and phenylboronic acids with …

Louver And Effusion Cooling Heat Transfer For A Double Wall Effusion Plate With Impingement Jet Array Coolant Supply, Sneha Reddy Vanga, Phillip M. Ligrani, Joseph Knox, Federico Liberatore, Rajeshriben Patel, Ying-Hsiang Ho
PRC-Affiliated Research
Louver slot cooling is employed, which consists of an aligned collection of film cooling holes, contained within a specially-designed device which concentrates, and directs the coolant from a slot, so that cooling air then advects as a layer downstream along the test surface. This louver-supplied coolant is then supplemented by coolant which emerges from different rows of downstream film cooling holes. Coolant for both cooling arrangements is supplied using an array of impingement jets. Experimental data are provided for a mainstream Reynolds number Rems range of 168,000–181,000. Full-coverage film cooling initial blowing ratio values are 2.5, 3.2, 4.4, and 5.2, …
