Incomplete Lineage Sorting And Reticulate Evolution Mask The Phylogenetic Relationships In Brunelliaceae, An Andean Family With Rapid Diversification, José Murillo-A, Janice Valencia Duarte, Clara Inés Orozco, Carlos Parra-O, Kurt M. Neubig Sep 2021

Incomplete Lineage Sorting And Reticulate Evolution Mask The Phylogenetic Relationships In Brunelliaceae, An Andean Family With Rapid Diversification, José Murillo-A, Janice Valencia Duarte, Clara Inés Orozco, Carlos Parra-O, Kurt M. Neubig

Plant Biology Data Sets

Brunelliaceae is composed of only one genus (Brunellia) that has more than 60 species. The phylogenetic relationships within Brunellia previously explored using morphological characters do not correspond with the ones found using traditional molecular markers. To solve this discrepancy, we explored more than 300 nuclear genes captured with the Angiosperm 353 bait kit and we used them to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the genus.

This data set contains the matrices used in the phylogenetic analyses. The genes are named using the numbers assigned in the Angiosperm 353 kit.

Cancellation Of Morita And Skew Types, Xin Tang, James J. Zhang, Xiangui Zhao Sep 2021

Cancellation Of Morita And Skew Types, Xin Tang, James J. Zhang, Xiangui Zhao

College of Health, Science, and Technology

We study both Morita cancellative and skew cancellative properties of noncommutative algebras as initiated recently in several papers and explore which classes of noncommutative algebras are Morita cancellative (respectively, skew cancellative). Several new results concerning these two types of cancellations, as well as the classical cancellation, are proved.

Charity-And Project-Based Service Learning Models Increase Public Service Motivation Outcomes Among Dietetic Students In A Community Nutrition Course, Lauren Dinour, Jennifer Kuscin Sep 2021

Charity-And Project-Based Service Learning Models Increase Public Service Motivation Outcomes Among Dietetic Students In A Community Nutrition Course, Lauren Dinour, Jennifer Kuscin

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

Objective:

To determine whether dietetic students would report a change in their public service motivation (PSM) following a community nutrition service learning (SL) course, and whether the SL model (charity v. project) influences this change differently.

Design:

Using a pretest–posttest, nonequivalent groups quasi-experimental design, this study compared students’ PSM at the beginning and end of a 15-week college-level course. PSM and four component dimensions (attraction to public policy, commitment to public interest, compassion and self-sacrifice) were measured via electronic survey using the PSM scale. Average PSM scores were compared between and within the charity and project groups using independent samples …

Multifunctional Corrosion Control System As A Sustainable Approach For Reinforced Concrete Elements, Homero Castaneda, Miladin Radovic, Brendy Rincon, Oladis Troconis, Arturo Montoya, Changkyu Kim, Loreto Dacio Sep 2021

Multifunctional Corrosion Control System As A Sustainable Approach For Reinforced Concrete Elements, Homero Castaneda, Miladin Radovic, Brendy Rincon, Oladis Troconis, Arturo Montoya, Changkyu Kim, Loreto Dacio

Data

Corrosion inhibitors can be utilized to decrease the corrosion kinetics and therefore increase the durability of reinforced concrete structures. Recently, a green synthesized organic compound, 1-benzyl-4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole (BPT), was shown to be a successful green organic corrosion inhibitor for mild steel. Studies suggested that the BPT adsorbs chemically onto the steel and acts as a mixed inhibitor, suppressing both the anodic and cathodic corrosion kinetics of steel. In addition, microcapsules have shown to be an efficient way for a controlled inhibitor release in reinforced concrete structures. On the other hand, geopolymers (GPs) comprised of a long range of covalently bonded alumino-silicates, …

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Project Prioritization For Rapid Post-Disaster Recovery Of Transportation Infrastructure Systems, Yongcheol Lee, Kunhee Choi Ph.D, Pedram Ghannad Sep 2021

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Project Prioritization For Rapid Post-Disaster Recovery Of Transportation Infrastructure Systems, Yongcheol Lee, Kunhee Choi Ph.D, Pedram Ghannad

Data

Among various natural hazards that threaten transportation infrastructure, flooding represents a major hazard in Region 6's states to roadways as it challenges their design, operation, efficiency, and safety. The catastrophic flooding disaster event generally leads to massive obstruction of traffic, direct damage to highway/bridge structures/pavement, and indirect damages to economic activities and regional communities that may cause loss of many lives. After disasters strike, reconstruction and maintenance of an enormous number of damaged transportation infrastructure systems require each DOT to take extremely expensive and long-term processes. In addition, planning and organizing post-disaster reconstruction and maintenance projects of transportation infrastructures are …

Efficient, Low-Cost Bridge Cracking Detection And Quantification Using Deep-Learning And Uav Images, Chao Sun, Xiangyu Meng, Joshua O. Ogbebor, Shaopan Guo

Data

Many bridges in the State of Louisiana and the United States are working under serious degradation conditions where cracks on bridges threaten structural integrity and public security. To ensure structural integrity and public security, it is required that bridges in the US be inspected and rated every two years. Currently, this biannual assessment is largely implemented using manual visual inspection methods, which is slow and costly. In addition, it is challenging for workers to detect cracks in regions that are hard to reach, e.g., the top part of the bridge tower, cables, mid-span of the bridge girders, and decks. This …

Rapid Repair Of Cracks On The Embankment Slopes Using Bio-Cement, Hai Lin, Guantao Cheng Sep 2021

Rapid Repair Of Cracks On The Embankment Slopes Using Bio-Cement, Hai Lin, Guantao Cheng

Data

This research explored the feasibility of using Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) to improve fine-grained soil mechanical properties, seal the soil cracks, and assess the improvement of MICP on slope stability. The conducted research tasks include (1) direct shear tests to investigate the mechanical behavior and biogeochemical reactions of low-plasticity silt treated by MICP, (2) cyclic wetting-drying tests to assess the feasibility of using MICP to seal and waterproof the soil cracks, and (3) SLOPE/W modeling of a slope treated by MICP. Direct shear tests were used to evaluate the shear responses of the low-plasticity silt under different overburden pressures …

Humans are changing the Earth's surface at an accelerating pace, with significant consequences for ecosystems and their biodiversity. Landscape transformation has far-reaching implications including reduced net primary production (NPP) available to support ecosystems, reduced energy supplies to consumers, and disruption of ecosystem services such as carbon storage. Anthropogenic activities have reduced global NPP available to terrestrial ecosystems by nearly 25%, but the loss of NPP from wetland ecosystems is unknown. We used a simple approach to estimate aquatic NPP from measured habitat areas and habitat-specific areal productivity in the largest wetland complex on the USA west coast, comparing historical and …
