Ems Response Time Analyses For A Rural County Using Geographically Weighted Regression With Different Kernel Weighting Functions, Sneha R. Vanga, Phillip M. Ligrani, Mehrnaz Doustmohammadi, Michael Anderson
PRC-Affiliated Research
A Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) is considered to compare results provided using two different kernel weighting functions: adaptive bi-square kernel and adaptive Gaussian kernel. To provide a baseline reference comparison, resulting data are also considered relative to Global Regression Analysis (GRA) calculations, which are obtained without the inclusion of geographical variability location data. For the analysis, data associated with a total of 214 crash cases for the dates between January 2016 and December 2019 are studied for a rural county in Alabama. Associated crash records are extracted from the Critical Analysis Reporting Environment (CARE) database. Six independent variables, including travel …

Characterization Of Effective Diffusion Within Viscoelastic Fluids With Elastic Instabilities, Valerie Hietsch, Phillip Ligrani, Mengying Su
PRC-Affiliated Research
We considered effective diffusion, characterized by magnitudes of effective diffusion coefficients, in order to quantify mass transport due to the onset and development of elastic instabilities. Effective diffusion coefficient magnitudes were determined using different analytic approaches, as they were applied to tracked visualizations of fluorescein dye front variations, as circumferential advection was imposed upon a flow environment produced using a rotating Couette flow arrangement. Effective diffusion coefficient results were provided for a range of flow shear rates, which were produced using different Couette flow rotation speeds and two different flow environment fluid depths. To visualize the flow behavior within the …

Dr. Harvey W. Wiley's Fight For Food Safety In The Late 19th Century And Early 20th Century, Katherine E. Dixon
The Exposition
In the late 19th Century, a researcher by the name of Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley. He had discovered that food manufacturers were adulterating and misbranding many of their food products. Dr. Wiley had realized that these chemicals being added to these food products were dangerous for human consumption and were not being put on the labels. Dr. Wiley realized this was a huge problem for Americans and dedicated his career to fight for regulations against this. He started an experimental group called the Poison Squad which helped to bring media attention to this issue.

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from 2H and 12C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle θpq, with a polar angle θpq coverage up to about 8◦. The missing energy resolution enabled us to determine the asymmetries for knock-out resulting in different states of the residual …

The process of resource mobilisation is fundamental in the creation of social value. However, the evidence that examines the approaches used by social entrepreneurs to mobilise critical resources in an environment with poor resources is limited. This study empirically explores social bricolage in the new research context of developing countries, building on the notion of ‘social bricolage’). This abductive, multiple-case study adopts the qualitative methodological approach, using empirical data on five social enterprises in Egypt through in-depth interviews with industry experts, social entrepreneurs, and other management teams. Our study advances scholarly understanding of social bricolage by examining resource mobilisation processes …

Antimicrobial drugs face numerous challenges, including drug resistance, systemic toxic effects, and poor bioavailability. To date, treatment choices are limited, which warrants the search for novel potent antivirals, including those extracted from natural products. The seeds of Peganum harmala L. (Zygophyllaceae family) have been reported to have antimicrobial, antifungal, and anticancer activities. In the present study, a 2-hydroxy propyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD)/harmala alkaloid-rich fraction (HARF) host–guest complex was prepared using a thin-film hydration method to improve the water solubility and bioavailability of HARF. The designed complex was then co-encapsulated with ascorbic acid into PLGA nanoparticles coated with polyethylene glycol (HARF–HPßCD/AA@PLGA-PEG NPs) using …
Fast And Accurate Machine Learning Compact Models For Interconnect Parasitic Capacitances Considering Systematic Process Variations
Faculty Journal Articles
A novel modeling methodology is developed for interconnect parasitic capacitances in rule-based extraction tools. Traditional rule-based extraction tools rely on pattern matching operations to match every interconnect structure with corresponding pre-characterized capacitance formulas. Such a method suffers from three main problems including limited pattern coverages, potential pattern mismatches, and limited handling of systematic process variations. These problems prohibit rule-based methods from coping with the new capacitance extraction accuracy requirements in advanced process nodes. The proposed methodology overcomes these problems by providing machine learning compact models for interconnect parasitic capacitances that cover varieties of realistic cross-section metal patterns. Those models efficiently …

Physiological responses to both natural and anthropogenic perturbations involve changes in glucose use and metabolism to enable animals to respond to challenges. The responses are at least partially mediated via the glucocorticoids, and the proper functioning of these systems are critical to animal health. Prolonged high-sugar diets in humans can compromise physiological functions and lead to a range of diseases including diabetes. Such outcomes are less common in natural, non-human systems, likely because of evolutionarily based balances between sugar intake and the ability to process it. Due to both landscape changes and human feeding of wildlife, the introduction of unnatural …
