Capital City Boosterism As Policy Legitimation: A Discursive Perspective Of Egypt's New Administrative Capital, Charles Wharton Kaye-Essien, Shahjahan Bhuiyan

Faculty Journal Articles

This article examines the legitimation of capital city relocation from a discursive perspective. It specifically focuses on how policymakers in developing countries often use boosters' language to legitimize the relocation of capital city functions. Drawing on critical discourse analysis as a theoretical frame and Egypt as a case, this article examines the ways in which government and property developers have succeeded in weaving the logics of the New Administrative Capital (NAC) into Greater Cairo's broader development discourse. The study highlights policy actors' legitimation strategies, locating them within the broader urban boosterism and south-south policy transfer literature. By emphasizing on policy …

Field Retrofit And Testing Of A Corroded Metal Culvert Using Gfrp, Mahmoud Reda Taha, Susan Bogus, Mohammed Abdellatef, Daniel Heras Murcia

Data

One of the current pressing problem for all DOTs is the corrosion-oriented deterioration of the existing metal culverts. These metal culverts typically are designed for a life of 50 years. However, corrosion is making them last no longer than 30years. Here we propose use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) pipe section as a fit-in GFRP profile liner for complete repair and rehabilitation of the corroded metal culvert with an expected life of 75 years. This is mainly because of the corrosion free nature of the GFRP material. In the current study, the design method for using glass fiber-reinforced polymer …

Properties Of Rent: The Political Economy Of Urban Villages In Delhi, Sushmita Pati Mar 2022

Properties Of Rent: The Political Economy Of Urban Villages In Delhi, Sushmita Pati

Books

We live in cities whose borders have always been subject to expansion. What does such transformation of rural spaces mean for cities and vice-versa? This book looks at the spatial transformation of villages brought into the Delhi's urban fray in the 1950s. As these villages transform physically; their residents, an agrarian-pastoralist community - the Jats - also transform into dabblers in real estate. A study of two villages - Munirka and Shahpur Jat - both in the heart of bustling urban economies of Delhi, reveal that it is 'rent' that could define this suburbanisation. 'Bhaichara', once a form of land …

Pando Aspen 2021 Remeasure, Paul C. Rogers

Browse all Datasets

Upland aspen (Populus spp.) forests contribute significantly to biodiversity in their circumboreal role as keystone species. The 43-hectare Pando aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clone in Utah, USA, is thought to be the largest living organism on earth, but is faltering due to chronic herbivory. Long-term resilience in aspen communities, including Pando, rests on successful recruitment of vegetative suckers. This is the first trend assessment of this threatened iconic forest using a vital indicators approach. I examined 64 plots using 19 indicators to determine current conditions. Findings show that a genetically uniform Pando is 'breaking up' because of herbivory fencing. Initial …

Exploring A Novel Family Of Poly(Amide-Imide)S As Promising Cationic Sorbents For Water Remediation, Manzar Zahra, Sonia Zulfiqar, Muhammad Farooq Wahab, Muhammad Ilyas Sarwar

Faculty Journal Articles

A new monomer 5-(5-(chlorocarbonyl)-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl) isophthaloyl chloride was synthesized and subsequently condensed with a variety of diamines yielding a novel family of poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs), which were exploited as potential cationic sorbents for water treatment. The synthesized monomer and all PAIs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic analyses. High thermal stability and molar masses of the whole PAIs family were determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Decomposition temperatures and char yields were found to be in the range 422-600 °C and 2–57% respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed the crystalline nature …

Dendrobium Officinale Leaf Polysaccharides Ameliorated Hyperglycemia And Promoted Gut Bacterial Associated Scfas To Alleviate Type 2 Diabetes In Adult Mice, Jingyu Fang, Yang Lin, Hualing Xie, Mohamed A. Farag

Faculty Journal Articles

The present study aimed to explore the possible mechanisms underlying Dendrobium officinale leaf polysaccharides of different molecular weight to alleviate glycolipid metabolic abnormalities, organ dysfunction and gut microbiota dysbiosis of T2D mice. An ultrafiltration membrane was employed to separate two fractions from Dendrobium officinale leaf polysaccharide named LDOP-A and LDOP-B. Here, we present data supporting that oral administration of LDOP-A and LDOP-B ameliorated hyperglycemia, inhibited insulin resistance, reduced lipid concentration, improved β-cell function. LDOP-A with lower molecular weight exhibited improved effect on diabetes than LDOP-B, concurrent with increased levels of colonic short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) i.e., butyrate, decreased ratio of …

Maximizing Dirty-Paper Coding Rate Of Ris-Assisted Multi-User Mimo Broadcast Channels, Mohamed A. Elmossallamy, Radwa Sultan, Karim G. Seddik, Geoffery Ye Li

Faculty Journal Articles

We consider a downlink multi-user scenario and investigate the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to maximize the dirty-paper-coding (DPC) sum rate of the RIS-assisted broadcast channel. Different from prior works, which maximize the rate achievable by linear precoders, we assume a capacity-achieving DPC scheme is employed at the transmitter and optimize the transmit covariances and RIS reflection coefficients to directly maximize the sum capacity of the broadcast channel. We propose an optimization algorithm that iteratively alternates between optimizing the transmit covariances using convex optimization and the RIS reflection coefficients using Riemannian manifold optimization. Our results show that the proposed …

Faculty Journal Articles

Based on the second-order and fourth-order irradiance moments, the closed-form of the propagation of the kurtosis parameter of non-truncated Hollow higher-order Cosh-Gaussian beam passing through an ABCD optical system was derived. Some numerical examples to illustrate the analytical results were given. The kurtosis parameter of some particular cases such, as fundamental Gaussian, Cosh-Gaussian and higher Cosh-Gaussian beams are also can be deduced from the main formula of this study. The obtained results were consistent with the previous works and constitute a more generalized investigation of kurtosis parameter of laser beams.

Protective Immune Potential Of Multiple Antigenic Peptide (Map) Constructs Comprising Peptides That Are Shared By Several Cysteine Peptidases Against Schistosoma Mansoni Infection In Mice, Aya Al-Naseri, Samar Al-Absi, Noha Mahana, Hatem Tallima

Faculty Journal Articles

In vaccine trials, Schistosoma mansoni cathepsin B1 (SmCB1), helminth cathepsins of the L family (e.g., SmCL3), and papain consistently induce highly significant reductions in challenge worm burden and egg viability, but generated no additive protective effects when used in combination. The protective capacity of the cysteine peptidases is associated with modest (SmCB1) and poor (cathepsins L) production of cytokines and antibodies, essentially of the type 2 axis, and is only marginally reduced upon use of proteolytically inactive enzymes. In this work, peptides shared by SmCB1, cathepsins of the L family, papain and other allergens were selected, synthesized as tetrabranched multiple …

Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen Atoms In Excited D States, Chandra M. Adhikari, Ulrich D. Jentschura Mar 2022

Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen Atoms In Excited D States, Chandra M. Adhikari, Ulrich D. Jentschura

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Pressure shifts inside an atomic beam are among the more theoretically challenging effects in high-precision measurements of atomic transitions. A crucial element in their theoretical analysis is the understanding of long-range interatomic interactions inside the beam. For excited reference states, the presence of quasi-degenerate states leads to additional challenges, due to the necessity to diagonalize large matrices in the quasi-degenerate hyperfine manifolds. Here, we focus on the interactions of hydrogen atoms in reference states composed of an excited nD state (atom A), and in the metastable 2S state (atom B). We devote special attention to the cases n = 3 …

Off-Peak Ndvi Correction To Reconstruct Landsat Time Series For Post-Fire Recovery In High-Latitude Forests, Cuizhen Wang, Aiai Wang, Dianfan Guo, Haibo Li, Shuying Zang

Faculty Publications

Collecting long-term satellite image series in high latitudes has been challenging due to its short growing season. For off-peak imagery, its reflective properties need to be corrected to maintain the spectral consistency. This study compares three statistical approaches to reconstructing a 30-year normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) series for forest recovery assessment after the 1987 Black Dragon Fire in the Greater Hinggan Mountains Forest, Northeast China. To correct the off-peak NDVI to peak NDVI, the Landsat paired regression takes advantage of the scene-to-scene linear relationship between the two images, the GIMMS booster approach compensates the NDVI increment rate based on …

Climate change and bush encroachment pose huge challenges to rangeland management in Namibia. These challenges require a holistic management approach that ensures consistent and optimum forage productivity and sustainability. Mechanical and chemical control methods are the most used techniques in controlling woody encroaching species to improve pastoral properties in the Namibian savannas. However, there is very little information regarding the management options that concurrently solve climate change and bush encroachment problems. This study compares the effects of different bush encroachment control methods -chemical control and mechanical control using a restoration thinning strategy and chemical aftercare- on carbon stocks, carbon sequestration …

Improved Binary Gaining–Sharing Knowledge-Based Algorithm With Mutation For Fault Section Location In Distribution Networks, Guojiang Xiong, Xufeng Yuan, Ali Wagdy Mohamed, Jun Chen

Faculty Journal Articles

Fault section location (FSL) plays a critical role in shortening blackout time and restoring power supply for distribution networks. This paper converts the FSL task into a binary optimization problem using the feeder terminal unit (FTU) information. The discrepancy between the reported overcurrent alarms and the expected overcurrent states of the FTUs is adopted as the objective function. It is a typical 0–1 combinatorial optimization problem with many local optima. An improved binary gaining–sharing knowledge-based algorithm (IBGSK) with mutation is proposed to effectively solve this challenging binary optimization problem. Since the original GSK cannot be applied in binary search space …

Optical Modulator Using Ultra-Thin Silicon Waveguide In Soi Hybrid Technology, Ahmed B. Ayoub, Mohamed A. Swillam Feb 2022

Optical Modulator Using Ultra-Thin Silicon Waveguide In Soi Hybrid Technology, Ahmed B. Ayoub, Mohamed A. Swillam

Faculty Journal Articles

We propose a detailed study of an on-chip optical modulator using a non-conventional silicon-based platform. This platform is based on the optimum design of ultra-thin silicon on insulator waveguide. This platform is characterized by low field confinement inside the core waveguide and high sensitivity to the cladding index. Accordingly, it lends itself to a wide range of applications, such as sensing and optical modulation. By employing this waveguide into the Mach–Zehnder interferometer configuration, an efficient optical modulator is reported using an organic polymer as an active material for the electro-optic effect. An extinction ratio of more than 20 dB is …

Untapped Potential Of 2d Charge Density Wave Chalcogenides As Negative Supercapacitor Electrode Materials, Mahmoud M. Elattar, Nageh K. Allam

Faculty Journal Articles

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have opened new avenues for the fabrication of ultrathin, transparent, and flexible functional devices. However, the conventional inorganic graphene analogues are either semiconductors or insulators with low electronic conductivity, hindering their use as supercapacitor electrode materials, which require high conductivity and large surface area. Recently, 2D charge density wave (CDW) materials, such as 2D chalcogenides, have attracted extensive attention as high performance functional nanomaterials in sensors, energy conversion, and spintronic devices. Herein, TaS2 is investigated as a potential CDW material for supercapacitors. The quantum capacitance (CQ) of the different TaS2 polymorphs (1T, 2H, and 3R) was estimated …

Sub-Femtojoule Optical Modulation Based On Hybrid Plasmonic Devices, S. M. Sherif, M. A. Swillam

Faculty Journal Articles

Optical modulation is an essential process in the telecommunication technology. A sub-femtojoule optical modulation based on low loss hybrid plasmonic waveguide which integrates silicon, metal, and electro-optic material is demonstrated. Modulation is achieved through applying modulating voltage across the electro-optic layers. Firstly, a directional coupler modulator is designed and simulated, it showed a modulation depth of 26 dB, and energy consumption of 0.8 fJ/bit. Secondly, a Mach Zender interferometer circuit based modulator is designed and analyzed, with a modulation depth of 32 dB, and energy consumption of 0.8 fJ/bit.
