Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide a reliable and energy-efficient solution for data collection from the Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) devices. However, the UAV’s deployment optimization, including locations of the UAV’s stop points, is a necessity to minimize the energy consumption of the UAV and the NB-IoT devices and also to conduct the data collection efficiently. In this regard, this paper proposes Gaining-Sharing Knowledge (GSK) algorithm for optimizing the UAV’s deployment. In GSK, the number of UAV’s stop points in the three-dimensional space is encapsulated into a single individual with a fixed length representing an entire deployment. The superiority of …

I am reading George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Song of Fire and Ice as I curate these essays. Having watched the HBO series based on the fantasy series by George R. R. Martin, I already know the twists and turns of this mammoth, resplendent, complex story. Martin is a master-craftsman no doubt. But I would have difficulty following this complex plot had it not been for the literacy provided by the previous experience of having watched the HBO show. So, essentially, I am rehearsing in my reading of Martin’s novel, characters and tropes and plot twists that …

Bcse: Blockchain-Based Trusted Service Evaluation Model Over Big Data, Fengyin Li, Xinying Yu, Rui Ge, Yanli Wang, Yang Cui, Huiyu Zhou

Big Data Mining and Analytics

The blockchain, with its key characteristics of decentralization, persistence, anonymity, and auditability, has become a solution to overcome the overdependence and lack of trust for a traditional public key infrastructure on third-party institutions. Because of these characteristics, the blockchain is suitable for solving certain open problems in the service-oriented social network, where the unreliability of submitted reviews of service vendors can cause serious security problems. To solve the unreliability problems of submitted reviews, this paper first proposes a blockchain-based identity authentication scheme and a new trusted service evaluation model by introducing the scheme into a service evaluation model. The new …

Exploiting More Associations Between Slots For Multi-Domain Dialog State Tracking, Hui Bai, Yan Yang, Jie Wang Mar 2022

Exploiting More Associations Between Slots For Multi-Domain Dialog State Tracking, Hui Bai, Yan Yang, Jie Wang

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Dialog State Tracking (DST) aims to extract the current state from the conversation and plays an important role in dialog systems. Existing methods usually predict the value of each slot independently and do not consider the correlations among slots, which will exacerbate the data sparsity problem because of the increased number of candidate values. In this paper, we propose a multi-domain DST model that integrates slot-relevant information. In particular, certain connections may exist among slots in different domains, and their corresponding values can be obtained through explicit or implicit reasoning. Therefore, we use the graph adjacency matrix to determine the …

Sampling With Prior Knowledge For High-Dimensional Gravitational Wave Data Analysis, He Wang, Zhoujian Cao, Yue Zhou, Zong-Kuan Guo, Zhixiang Ren

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Extracting knowledge from high-dimensional data has been notoriously difficult, primarily due to the so-called "curse of dimensionality" and the complex joint distributions of these dimensions. This is a particularly profound issue for high-dimensional gravitational wave data analysis where one requires to conduct Bayesian inference and estimate joint posterior distributions. In this study, we incorporate prior physical knowledge by sampling from desired interim distributions to develop the training dataset. Accordingly, the more relevant regions of the high-dimensional feature space are covered by additional data points, such that the model can learn the subtle but important details. We adapt the normalizing flow …

Toward Intelligent Financial Advisors For Identifying Potential Clients: A Multitask Perspective, Qixiang Shao, Runlong Yu, Hongke Zhao, Chunli Liu, Mengyi Zhang, Hongmei Song, Qi Liu

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Intelligent Financial Advisors (IFAs) in online financial applications (apps) have brought new life to personal investment by providing appropriate and high-quality portfolios for users. In real-world scenarios, identifying potential clients is a crucial issue for IFAs, i.e., identifying users who are willing to purchase the portfolios. Thus, extracting useful information from various characteristics of users and further predicting their purchase inclination are urgent. However, two critical problems encountered in real practice make this prediction task challenging, i.e., sample selection bias and data sparsity. In this study, we formalize a potential conversion relationship, i.e., user→activated user→client and decompose this relationship into …

A Comparison Of Computational Approaches For Intron Retention Detection, Jiantao Zheng, Cuixiang Lin, Zhenpeng Wu, Hong-Dong Li

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Intron Retention (IR) is an alternative splicing mode through which introns are retained in mature RNAs rather than being spliced in most cases. IR has been gaining increasing attention in recent years because of its recognized association with gene expression regulation and complex diseases. Continuous efforts have been dedicated to the development of IR detection methods. These methods differ in their metrics to quantify retention propensity, performance to detect IR events, functional enrichment of detected IRs, and computational speed. A systematic experimental comparison would be valuable to the selection and use of existing methods. In this work, we conduct an …

Mothering In A Pandemic: Navigating Care Work, Intensive Motherhood, And Covid-19, Molly Wiant Cummins, Grace Ellen Brannon

Communication Faculty Publications - Archive

Even before COVID-19, women around the world performed more unpaid domestic labor, specifically unpaid care labor, than men. COVID-19 has only exacerbated the gender gap in this domestic labor. For Western women, especially mothers in the United States of America, the normative discourse of intensive motherhood and the gendered pressure inherent in the unrealistic standards set by the discourse have only increased the amount of unpaid domestic and care labor required of mothers. Using qualitative, in-depth interviews with 18 mothers during May–June 2020, this study examines privileged mothers’ perceptions of what they did well in parenting both before and during …

This article analyses what makes a social regulation like the firecracker ban in the state of West Bengal in India a success story such that it may be replicated by other states which are striving hard to curb air pollution levels and arrest rising pandemic cases amidst a festive season. The authors have examined the firecracker ban on the basis of Teubner’s Regulatory Trilemma and Parker and Braithwaite’s three principles to check whether it passes the tests of effectiveness, responsiveness and coherence. The article demonstrates how West Bengal has carved a new and expanded meaning of “performing regulation” in India …

A Novel Framework For Brain Tumor Detection Based On Convolutional Variational Generative Models, Wessam M. Salama, Ahmed Shokry

Faculty Journal Articles

Brain tumor detection can make the difference between life and death. Recently, deep learning-based brain tumor detection techniques have gained attention due to their higher performance. However, obtaining the expected performance of such deep learning-based systems requires large amounts of classified images to train the deep models. Obtaining such data is usually boring, time-consuming, and can easily be exposed to human mistakes which hinder the utilization of such deep learning approaches. This paper introduces a novel framework for brain tumor detection and classification. The basic idea is to generate a large synthetic MRI images dataset that reflects the typical pattern …

Propping The Electrochemical Impedance Spectra At Different Voltages Reveals The Untapped Supercapacitive Performance Of Materials, Ibrahim M. Badawy, Abdussalam M. Elbanna, Mohamed Ramadan, Nageh K. Allam

Faculty Journal Articles

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is one of the most powerful and universal techniques that provides deep insights into the nature of the electrochemical system and its performance and limitations. Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) are electrochemical devices that can deliver and store large amounts of energy compared to traditional capacitors. The selection of an electrolyte is critical to the overall performance of EDLCs as it strongly influences the internal resistance, operating potential window, and rate capability of the device. Herein, fullerene C76 is investigated in four different electrolyte systems (Li2SO4, Na2SO4, K2SO4, and Rb2SO4) to reveal the crucial role of …

Magic Wavelengths For 1s–Ns And 2s–Ns Transitions In Hydrogenlike Systems, Chandra M. Adhikari, Jonathan C. Canales, Thusitha P.W. Arthanayaka, Ulrich D. Jentschura

College of Health, Science, and Technology

We study the magic wavelength for two-photon 1S–nS transitions in a hydrogen and deuterium atom, as well as 2S–nS transitions, where the lower level is the metastable 2S state. At the magic wavelength, the dynamic Stark shifts of the ground and the excited state of the transition coincide, so that the transition frequency is independent of the intensity of the trapping laser field. Experimentally feasible magic wavelengths of transitions with small slopes in the atomic polarizabilities are determined; these are the most stable magic wavelengths against variations of the laser frequency. We provide data for the magic wavelengths for the …

This theoretical paper explores how Chinese international students (CISs) in the US are situated through an AsianCrit lens during the COVID-19 pandemic. Stemming from Critical Race Theory, AsianCrit addresses the varying historical underpinnings of racism against Asian American communities, which the authors would like to expand into Chinese sojourner populations. Anti-Chinese sentiment is evident in US history through the prohibition of Chinese immigration and violation of civil rights dating back to well over a century. The framework seeks to challenge normative research on CISs that is largely understood through experiences in international education or mental health services. Key areas of …
